VHS OR BETA
Hey one of my favorite Asian-fronted bands is coming to town on Friday. Who? VHS OR BETA. That's who. They're celebrating their new release, Night on Fire, this Friday, September 17th at Knitting Factory. The band will be playing with two much-hyped supporting acts, The Bravery and Chin Chin. You know, the kids with all the hair-spray and cockneyed moves.

I saw the Bravery's show at Mercury Lounge a couple weeks ago. People were hyping them to me as NYC's answer to Franz Ferdinand. They are not. They're NYC's answer to The Killers and that's a question I don't think anyone was asking. Much posing and silly hair and eye makeup. The lead guitarist pulled out the Steve Vai style licks a couple times and you just knew that's what he wanted to do on *every* song. Very calculated.
So I'm listening to this VHS or Beta album and it's the nuttiest thing I've heard in a while. There's not a hint that this was made in 2004. Sounds more like 1982 -- Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and ABC come to mind. I dont' know what to think. A little Daft Punk fromage perhaps.
