the weekend that made me weak

friday, sept. 10
i had such nervous energy in my stomach on friday night in preparation for dirty on purpose's show at mercury lounge. i had tons of people coming to the show, and before the show even started it was very close to being sold out. wowza! we were goofballs downstairs before the show started. some peeps from pela and some peeps from dop began to sing neutral milk hotel's "holland, 1945." i can't believe everyone remembered the lyrics to that song. it was like we were just pumping up for the show and paying tribute to one of our favorite bands at the same time.

when we headed upstairs for pela's set, guess what the house was playing? none other than aeroplane over the sea. it's like they knew what we were doing, and decided to play along. sweet!

this was pela's second show in a long time. they've been working on new songs and recordings, and are starting to venture out into the open again. i have to say they played a stellar, energized set, in typical pela fashion. some of the arrangements of their songs were different from the recorded stuff i had, but it didn't bother me too much. they received many well deserved whoops and hollas.

before dirty on purpose hit the stage, i was trembling. i feel like we have been preparing for this show forever. they played mostly new, unrecorded songs -- only playing "cheat death" and "girls & sunshine" from the sleep late for a better tomorrow ep. it's amazing that they can keep changing their set so much with each show because they keep writing really awesome songs. their catalogue is pretty impressive for a band that has only two eps out. i'd say they have at least 20 songs to work with when they plan a set list out, and that's pretty effing hawt! it just makes me anxious for them to record more. their set was killer though, and they nailed each song with grace. i was surrounded by love -- all of our friends had shown up to rawk out and support, and it made me feel like i was getting a big hug. so cool.

lots of hugs to johnny and maggie from mercury lounge. they are the bizzestest. xoxoxoxoxoxo

afterwards, i headed over to eric from say hi to your mom's birthday party at union pool in williamsburg. there were TONS of people there. it was hard to move around. but eventually people trickled out. i spent most of the night talking with doug's friend brendan, who wants to direct a dirty on purpose music video. he told me about his trip to honduras. HONDURAS. this kid has been everywhere, and i was jealous. i haven't even left the country yet -- unless you count going to niagra falls in middle school... and i don't count that. i need to get a passport and get the eff outta here. just for a vacay.

i was briefly greeted by joe's independently wealthy friend daniel sasse. i love this guy. he greets you with a kiss on your cheek. he introduces people like so:
joe = the amazing joe jurewicz
george = gorgeous george
jin = jin spelled with a "j"

that's what makes him tops. plus, the fact that his name is daniel sasse, and you can't possibly refer to him as anything but.

after union pool kicked us out, we wandered over to kelloggs for some disgusting late-night grub. i had some french fries... but they weren't very good. but we had good table banter so all in all, it was a great night.

saturday, sept. 11
there's something about sitting in my lil' breadbox in the wilds of williamsburg on a saturday night that makes me antsy pantsy. it had nothing to do with the fact that it was sept. 11 and there were two ominous, somber beams in the sky, reminding us of days more terrible. it was just one of those new york nights -- nights that call out your name -- nights that beckon you to ravage the city, even if there's nothing going on that you really want to do. it's simply the desire to connect with other people and possibly further your friendships. and i accepted the challenge.

i ventured off to a keg party that jay talked about in williamsburg. it was some girl's birthday party... dee, kyle's girlfriend. juliet and i were the strange asian chicks in the corner who didn't know anyone except for jay, builder and noah. we were thinking of bolting the party when jay finally came over and paid attention to us. thanks jay. juliet and i didn't want to drink beer, so we wandered over to khim's deli and got a cheap bottle of wine. dude, that shit was narsty. but we drank it and started to feel buzz. jay was entertaining his friend whitney. i felt sorry for the boy -- he was stuck at some low-key birthday party in williamsburg, when he was really all dolled up to go party with jarvis cocker at misshapes. he had on a black button-down and a red tie. he was ready to shake his ass. so i convinced jay to take him to misshapes. juliet worked her magic and we zoomed into the club and started dancing. audrey was on the wheels. she played an excellent set. so did the tarts of pleasure, aka sarah and karen. how fun! people were moshing. my sneakers got all dirty. i was spilling alcohol everywhere. it was awesome.

somehow we ended up back at the birthday party in williamsburg. doing shots of beer? i couldn't really finish one. then all of a sudden, kyle was on one side of me, dee was on the other side of me, and they were barraging me with questions. what nationality am i? do i like korean food? do i speak korean? it was 5 in the morning and i was trashed. i was like, what the hell!?!? do i have to think at all? i went home and went to sleep.

sunday, sept. 12

the aftermath of that party was bad though. i went to sleep at 6 a.m. and didn't wake up until 5:30 in the afternoon. just enough time to stuff some food in my stomach (i hadn't eaten since brunch the previous day and was more starved than mary kate) and head over to george's birthday party at union pool. it was cool to see a bunch of friends get together to celebrate the huggy wonder of gorgeous george. he was in good spirits. juliet made him a crown out of newspaper and i kissed it with her pink chanel lipstick. all hail george, king of the jungle! it was a great night for me, as i started managing dirty on purpose pretty much since george's last birthday. i remember going to his birthday party last year at union pool and thinking, i hardly know these people, but they are so warm and welcoming! happy birthday, babe.
