valentine's day

i think it's a little bit of a joke that valentine's day falls on the day before payday. as millions (millions? really?) of people scramble to buy their lil' special snuggly wuggly a gift to express their luvvy wuvvy ways, they are also thinking, damn, tomorrow is payday! at least, that's what i imagine they are thinking.

this year i have no valentine, but i'm not even sad about it. it's weird. i've been increasingly becoming fascinated with reading what i like to call "normal people's blogs." these are blogs that read like daily diary entries. and they don't really talk about when the next whatever album is coming out. two of these blogs that i have come to adore are written by former coworkers of mine who are amazing writers... maybe that's why it's so easy to read because i already know a little bit of their back story. and i know their voice. losing touch with these people was sad, but every now and then we'll send each other an email recounting fun IM convos -- those days when we used to gush over steve malkmus and shiba inus. le sigh.

so reading about "quirkyalones" in f's blog was pretty exhilarating. it was like some sort of sign or something. to quote her:

There's a new book called Quirkyalone that I would like to read. Here is a description (from Amazon):

quirkyalone (kwur.kee.uh.lohn) n. adj.
A person who enjoys being single (but is not opposed to being in a relationship) and generally prefers to be alone rather than date for the sake of being in a couple. With unique traits and an optimistic spirit; a sensibility that transcends relationship status. Also adj. Of, relating to, or embodying quirkyalones.
See also: romantic, idealist, independent.

so... am i quirkyalone? probably not exactly. but perhaps that's where i am heading towards. maybe i will be like f. she's highly successful in my eyes in all respects. and i believe one day she will find her perfect match (though it's probably not going to be steve malkmus).

yesterday i did get a valentine in the mail tho, and i had to admit it made me smile. it was from elizabeth, bergory's ex, and she had wrapped this amazingly haunting and beautiful picture around the envelope. inside were two valentines -- one that she had made herself and one that was like the kind you give in elementary school to your classmates -- i think the character was barbie. the girl is just too sweet and thoughtful. i love that i received this valentine snail mail, and it was given with the intention of cheering me up. that my dears is a touching salute to friendship. some valentines are given with action (thanks anna and stephie) and some are given with creativity and snail mail.

with my limited funds, i have decided to keep things on the DL. last night i was at work until quarter to 10. i was soooo exhausted after a week of coming in early and staying late, that i called up doug and decided to hang out for a little bit at his place and watch curb your enthusiasm. this is one of those shows that is so frustrating to watch, but entirely funny at the same time. it's like seinfeld with twice the screaming and 10 times the awkward moments. hilarious!

tonight those of you with money in your pockets should stop by the loose record after party for sam champion, one of my favorite local bands. huzzah! get the details from jay's site. i wanted to go to the party but i am going to see no things at todd p's new space down by the water in ol' brooklyn, partly for work, partly for pleasure. partly because i will feel no pressure to spend any money because i am completely broke! that's new york livin', peeps. always wondering where the next penny will or will not be spent.

also if you're on the LES, i guess you should know about this too:
au revoir simone @ the delancey. not sure what time they go on, but they are playing tonight and you should support them.

there's also a misfits cover band playing at arlene's grocery in honor of kevbo's birthday. he's turning 25, and he thinks that's getting old. puhlease! go wish him a happy one, if you know him. i think i am the only one who calls him kevbo, but if you know, you know, you know?
