made in sheffield
last night i was lucky enough to go with jay to the party for this documentary called made in sheffield. we ran into the gothamist/coolfer duo of jen and glenn. it was sort of a shock for me to run into people i know as i have been heavily on the DL, but it was nice. keep 'em coming, peeps.

i didn't even know there was a scene in sheffield, nevermind that it was made up of top of the pops bands like the human league and abc. of course, what i really didn't know is how these bands really started -- as experimental noise bands, mostly because no one knew how to play any of their instruments (more like the strange energy of cabaret voltaire). this was a truly democratic community of musicians that was exploding in sheffield, amidst more popular and accessible acts like the extras, who were more influenced by straight-up blues and R&B than twiddling knobs to make squeaks and squiggles. the experimental gave way to more commercial music as the music evolved from intangible noise to solid new wave. also i enjoyed the jarvis cocker commentary. pulp forever!

anyways, i really liked the space where the party was -- this store in soho called groupe 16sur20, which was located right across the street of our fine dining experience at cafe colonial around houston and elizabeth. while the store does have a strange name, it was great space, in fact, perfect place for a party. see the photo above to see what it looked like (add industry hipsters and empty bottles of red stripe -- thanks jay and hawkins).

i have no idea what that 007 car is doing there... but someone at the party said they wanted to have sex on it... so i guess it's a pretty sexy car. i like the white vents. hmmmm.... check it out this weekend if you're in the nabe.
