i remember when i used to want to be a director...
oh those middle school days when your teacher makes you do a presentation on what you'd like to be when you grow up. what did i do my presentation on? i said i wanted to direct music videos and films. oh so silly. what clips did i use in my presentation? i showed the original music video of nirvana's "smells like teen spirit" and weird al yankovic's spoof "smells like nirvana." then i showed a clip from one of my favorite movies, silence of the lambs, (i had a slight anthony hopkins obsession back then). isn't it glorious (a recent favorite word of mine) to think of how we aspired so much when we were young?

but some people really go out there and do it -- and they do it with such art. remember the palm pictures director's label dvd series? i know a lot of people who own the ones on chris cunningham, spike jonze and michel gondry. well there's a new series out now featuring the works of mark romanek, stephane sednaoui, anton corbijn and jonathan glazer. these people just blow me away with their creative concepts and their execution of these concepts. i mean i loooooooove that nirvana "heart shaped box" video. the colors are so alive and juxtaposed with the band's apathy and distrust with the world. it was just perfect. other featured videos in this series include some of my favorite video memories: u2's "one," unkle's "rabbit in your headlights," radiohead's "karma police," johnny cash's "hurt," fiona apple's "criminal," madonna's "rain," lenny kravitz's "are you gonna go my way," nine inch nails' "closer" and many more.
