i'm easing back into the show circuit
last week shara gave me two free tickets to the death cab for cutie, decemberists, stars show in central park. i was very excited. i took my coworker mary to the show. we got there and there was a pleasant breeze and good spirits in the air. a bunch of her friends were coming up to the park to enjoy the show just outside the gates, where many indie kids were camped out. we ran into a couple kids who bought fake tickets for $80. we felt so bad for them... so we sold them our tickets for like $40 so they could go enjoy the show... this is just after stars played (they were great by the way). then mary and i took the money and went downtown to mary ann's and had some dinner and margaritas. fun night!

last night i went to see the most serene republic, the big sleep and kinski at mercury lounge. i arrived there with the effervescent jay good times. we moved up to the front for the most serene republic, and we ran into glenn from coolfer. i was quickly mesmerized, not by the overjoyed, bug-eyed lead singer, but by the bombastic, wailing drummer. dude was totally hot... and pounding on those drums. i thought they were going to smash into bits. for the most part i enjoyed the laid-back girl/energized boy vocal play, but sometimes the male lead singer was a bit too much to watch. so i just watched the drummer. i haven't heard the album yet, but i hear it's not as frantic as the live show.

dtl got there just in time for the big sleep set. we've been fans of danny, sonya and gabe for a while now, so we were psyched. kevbo joined us shortly after the set started. i had to say i was pretty into the set, and was tapping my foot along to the beats. they are mostly instrumental, which i enjoy, but i even find myself liking the little bit of vocals they add into their set. sonya has this intuitive sexiness that is captivating. danny is just plain raw. i like. i can't wait for their album... i hear it's almost done!! someone from girls against boys is mixing their tracks as we speak.

between sets, dtl, kevin and i went to visit andy at cake shop. this is what we call "treating." we are on the hunt for sugar, and boy did we find it. we bought a vegan peanut butter chocolate whoopie pie. the thing was humungous. we split it three ways, and subsequently went into some kind of sugar coma. whoa.

i stayed for about half of kinski's set. they played mostly stuff from the new album... which isn't as good as some of their older material. they are tough dudes though, as dtl pointed out. even the girl in the band is a tough dude. word. i like tough. plus, i will always like them though for pulling out that psychedelic jazz flute. that was a classic moment.
