the lilys @ magnetic field
so i went to see the lilys at magnetic field, but i got there a little late. i made grape jello shots with gin and vodka, and got a little drunk before the show with mike and jenna. we took the b61 bus from bedford avenue in wburg to atlantic avenue in cobble hill/carroll gardens. it wasn't that bad of a bus ride actually... when i got to the venue, they were about 3 songs into their set, but skippy assured me that kurt would play for an hour. they played songs, old and new, but it was sort of hard to watch the show from the back of the room. damn those pillars! even so, the lilys were beautiful, and the new numbers were killer. for some reason, they make me want to swish around and smile like a fool in love.
i haven't been taking photos at shows lately because i'm trying to change my show going experience from behind the lens to in front of the ears... if that makes any sort of sense. this was a decision i made before that last ohmyrockness newsletter, where they talked about how annoying it is to be at an indie rock show with a bunch of bloggerazzi in the front snapping photos. taking photos at a show is both engaging for the person snapping away, but it truly is different to just stand still at a show and let the music slowly soak in. that experience really makes the music the centerpiece of a show. agree? disagree?

I tend to take some photos during the first song or two, and then put the camera away and just focus on listening to the music and watching the entire band. Sure, I miss some photogenic moments later on during the show, but I'd rather not have my camera out the entire evening, for the reason above and also because it's annoying to other people. And if I get to a show a little late and the front is crowded, I'm not one of those people who pushes his or her way to the front just to take pictures.
i know what you mean, i have felt like i've missed th experience of a good show because i was so busy trying to get a good shot of the band. you gotta figure if you want pictures to accompany a blog post or something, you can probably find them on flickr or elsewhere.
yeah i've just been feeling like i need to pay attention to the music and show experience -- i feel like i'm missing a lot when i'm paying more attention to snapping than listening. i'm not a professional photographer or whatever, but i am a music writer - so i'll let the aspiring rock photographers get the shots and i'd rather just stand back and let the music blow me away (or not - whichever is the case). i decided that i needed to let my thoughts focus on the music and the show instead of getting the perfect blurry shot. haha.
