cassettes won't listen @ music slut party - the delancey

i went to see cassettes won't listen, a one-man-band, for the first time at the music slut's spring fling party at the delancey this past saturday night. first, let me just say congrats to the music slut trio for a fantastic party. it felt warm (literally and figuratively) and friendly in the downstairs of the delancey. cassettes won't listen had a live drummer for the show and a couple other surprises.

what i really like about jay drake from cassettes won't listen is that he won't constrain himself to one musical genre. he can throw down hip-hop as much as he can pay homage to the postal service. his set was so diverse, it might have confused some in the audience. but once you discover that cwl also does remixes for bands, you sort of understand why cwl's music spans the musical horizon. i was particularly impressed with his skills on the keys, and thought his vocals reminded me of ben gibbard at times. at one point, he brought out a rapper and r&b songstress on a hip-hop track, posing it to the audience as though everything was was unplanned and he just pulled these people randomly from the crowd. however, once all three started performing, rapping and singing, the song came together wonderfully and you knew this ain't no ruse. it was the real deal. i'm looking forward to seeing him develop more.
download the cwl remix of el-p's "flyentology" featuring trent reznor.
check out his remix of asobi seksu's "strawberries" on asobi seksu's myspace. cwl is working on a remix for dirty on purpose's "car no driver." i'm excited to hear it...
check out his cover of liz phair's "fuck and run" on the cassettes won't listen myspace.
check out more photos from the show.
