indie rock and fashion
you know what i hate? i hate pretentious people. i hate the pressure to look good and stylish in the indie rock community. so when i read articles like this about how you need to wear certain labels to have cred as an indie artist, i say FUCKIN' BULLSHIT! but it is cool that they mention kari's party at the delancey and the misshapes party at luke and leroys. what's up this bloggers mention though:
House of Diehl, Craig Robinson, Bonnie Barton, Christian Joy and Cloak are hitching their stars to musicians who wear the clothes onstage and at select parties — Thursdays at the Delancey, Saturdays at Luke and Leroy, art openings at galleries like Rivington Arms — sure to attract stylists, bloggers and fashion assistants.
uh, bloggers?
Craig Robinson agrees. An independent men's wear designer known for luxurious suits that enhance the male physique and are made of fabrics like Venetian wool and cashmere, he dressed the singer Ezra Reich and the bands Dead Combo, Bad Wizard and Interpol. "Some of the bands I dress don't even have 75 cents in their pocket and may never be famous, but they're considered some of the coolest and fashionable kids on the scene," Mr. Robinson said. His suits retail for $2,100 to $3,900 at his Fifth Avenue atelier, but he justifies free perks and discounts to rock bands as a good investment. "Other customers like that cool bands wear my stuff," he said. "It adds a bit of romance to my brand."
i guess i'm not cool enough for these clothes.
When her band's album "Fever to Tell" started gaining national attention on television and radio, Karen O, who sometimes crawls around the stage and sucks the microphone during Yeah Yeah Yeah performances, gave Ms. Joy enough commissions for Ms. Joy to quit her day job. "It was amazing to go to the MTV awards and all of a sudden there's Karen, dressed in a spandex silver space-age costume that I made her, trying to rock out in this beautiful set of giant weird tulips that Spike Jonze did," she said.
hahaha, sometimes sucks the microphone... or... ew. ok that was a little raunchy.
With H&M and Urban Outfitters selling downtown garage-rock style, many bands are seeking clothes that are not easy to imitate. "The worst is turning on MTV and seeing bands that have been heavily styled," said Diego Garcia, 26, lead singer of Elefant, who gets free clothes from the small men's wear label Cloak. Cloak is sold at Opening Ceremony on Howard Street, and Fred Segal in Los Angeles. The line combines elegant tailoring and a dark night-stalker look.
Mr. Garcia said that a major Italian design house tried to entice Elefant to wear its clothes onstage. "They said they'd pay us money," Mr. Garcia recalled, "and they'd promote the event." But he rejected the offer emphatically, he said. "The clothing was tacky and derivative. Having your own designer with a fresh perspective adds integrity to your band, and the public picks up on that."
oh, that diego. having your own designer is kinda pretentious, no?
another funny diego quote:
"Aren't these scarves great? When I perform, I like to take them off and throw them to the girls in the audience. They love it!"
hahahaha i can't stop laughing. make it stop. seriously.
naf!!!
my friend naf has been in japan for like a year now... rockin the bands in japan. word! you can see photos of him with from monument to masses here. whatta rock star!! otm tokyo in effect!
kids can make a difference too
as this geeky seventh grader proved, kids can make a difference in politics. i love how she told dick cheney he needed a timeout for saying a curse word. isn't his name a dirty word though? anyhoo, next thing you know there will be a hipsters for kerry, a friendsters for kerry, a myspace for kerry, bath and body works for kerry... anna sent me that kids for kerry link... and she told me she's thinking of joining this joke anti-bush organization called billionaires for bush. they just show up drinking champagne in expensive outfits and have themselves a ball. sometimes the republicans can't tell that it's all a joke until minutes afterwards. they're such dumbasses! anna has a great billionaire name that i won't share, until it's all official. word.
double vision
the rainy weather and my soggy chucks weren't a good omen for the rock show i was attending last night at mercury lounge... but somehow i was vaguely optimistic about the lineup. george hasn't stopped raving about shy child since i met him. i've seen inouk play with stellastarr* at that +1 launch party at don hill's so i knew that they would at least not suck. and i've been hearing so much buzz around the double for the past few months, even with my ear plugs in, so i thought they should be able to bring it awwwwn. so do it already, right?
i walked in to see jay, who staunchly had told me earlier in the day that he was NOT going to the merc that night, but whatever. he was hanging with the lovely ladies of demander, karen and sivan, who impressed me with their toughness the other night at vicious. rawr. i owed johnny a tequila shot from the one he bestowed me at rothko during the trail of dead show (oh yeah i did go to that show... and i think i forgot to mention that on this here blog -- woops. in short, it was crazy with lots of instruments and amps trashed... though they did manage to do one encore with the double drums and one guitar). so anyways, we did shots of cuervo, and my tummy instantly felt warm and better. mmm, tequila tuesdays! jay also told me he was going to become a portland cop and has quit drugs. WHA? he should have his own reality tv show. seriously. mtv, are you reading this?
i was really impressed with shy child... in fact, they might have been my favorite band of the night. they are a dancey indie rock two piece. the lead singer reminds me of ad rock from the beastie boys -- imagine if he sang instead of spit -- that's the dude from shy child! he had his keyboard slung around his neck and was playing the cool-ass shit out of it. ok that phrase sounded retarded, but whatever. you get the point. the drummer, who i guess is friends with george, was also pretty rad, especially when he peeled off his shirt to reveal... a skinny indie rock boy. the dynamic duo would do these start and stops in their songs that would get the crowd hooked. a whole bunch of girls ready to dance were up front and center, and some of them went crazy for the last song of shy child's set. sweet! here's a shy child mp3 that bidi graciously sent me last night: "you're all a glow"
before inouk took the stage, i went out for a cigarette break with joe. we stood inhaling our ciggys in the rain and talked about the impending tour. jesus, i'm so siked! everyone please meet and greet us if we come to your town. it's going to be so much fun, and we're depending on you to show us a good time in your city. we are ready to rock! i am ready to tour manage. wheee! here are the tour dates if you haven't checked them out yet... link to dirty on purpose "no sleep til [we get back to] brooklyn" tour dates
ok back to inouk, i always have my doubts when i see a band that has one guy with a flock of seagulls haircut, but if the music is good, the music is good, right? the cd has been pretty cool to listen to, and inouk seems to be able to transcend their recording for the most part... though i do prefer the vocalist who doesn't have the flock of seagulls cut. i don't know his name, but he had this voice that actually baaaahed like a friggin sheep. a friggin sheep! that's a voice that sorta hard to forget. there weren't many theatrics to their performance which was both a good and a bad thing. while it gave them rock cred, it also made them kind of ... boring to watch. but the music was still good. and i prefer non-theatrical performance when it comes to the straight up rock that they bring. they're from philly, keepin it real. here's a link to one of inouk's best songs: "searching for the bees"
up next were the double. i ran into susan somewhere. i haven't seen her in so long it seems so it was nice to reconnect with her. she has a soft spot for the double, so i really wanted to check them out. i listened to this mp3 that bidi sent me on repeat for like an hour -- until it was making me physically ill, in a good, eerie way: "blanket on the beach"... so when they actually stepped on stage, i was ready for incredibly strange, but mellow music that makes you feel slightly unsure of yourself in the dark. what i found was something less eerie, but just as interesting. the guitarist did some really cool tricks on the guitar that made the music more experimental (like plugging his guitar in and out to create some dirty squeals). i wasn't sure what i thought of the lead singer. but he won me over towards the end of the set -- why? because while he was singing this one song, he pushed up his glasses with the hand that was holding the mic, and i thought it was so adorably shy and dorky. that's the kind of nuances i like in bands! the effects guy all the way on the right was also cracking me up because you could tell he loved the music so much he was bopping and singing along to it with a proud smile. i love that too. the drummer was also hitting everything super hard and jauntily. and the guitarist sings on a song too! so while some of the songs blended a little too much and sounded the same, there were several bright points to their set that i simply adored... Labels: dirty on purpose
nice basket, dude!
i stole this photo from +1's site. because i thought it was the opposite of "rockin". but you know what IS rockin? the hot rock bill going on tonight at mercury lounge and i'm sure it will sell out, so get there early to catch inouk. they go at around 9:30 on right before the double. then stick around for shy child and the double. i've heard that they're good... but the only band that i can vouch for is inouk. whatever, you'll get the full report from me afterwards. fo sho!
slipping into indie
the slip is a band that my coworker jon has been raving about for months and months and months. they played the sxsw showcase this year with stellastarr* and startime, and they're playing with broken social scene this year at the austin city limits festival. check out their mp3 of "the zeroes (children of december)". yo i'm a child of december fo sho. tell me what you think of them and this song... if you're not rockin' and rollerskatin' with dop this friday, (you totally are!!) then check out the slip at bb kings.
summertime and so what?
peeps, i'm feeling so much better than i have been. it's a sweet relief to be able to breathe again without feeling like there's a heartache a'brewing. or heart attack, rather.
on friday i went to see summerstage with stellastarr*, yeah yeah yeahs and devo. fucking devo! are we not men? we are devo! it was raining steadily during stellastarr*'s set, but there was something magical about rock and roll in the rain. there's a sweet abandon that sparkles as the stage is encased in sprinkles of rain in the middle of central park! so pretty. they had the best sound out of all the bands, and as the entrancing notes of "moon girl" filled central park, i couldn't help but be excited for them. the fans up front and center were dancing up a storm as per usual during "my coco." i was pretty siked for them. it's nice to see a local band on the up and up. especially with the music industry flagging like it is. did you hear sony is laying off 2000 people worldwide? what's up with that?
anyhoo, i had to delve into the crowd during the yeah yeah yeahs' set. the rain had subsided, and karen o was all like, "where's the raaaaaain!??? i was expecting punk rock punk rock! i mean it's been a couple years since i've gone out to see this band. cmj halloween 2002 to be exact. crazy eh? so i was expecting hardcore goodness to be gushing out of karen o... and i got mush instead! lots of new songs seemed to start off their set... then they played "art star" and "year to be hated" and later ended their set lowkey with "maps" and "modern romance." i felt a little gypped. i wanted to dance and get all crazy, but maybe those days are long gone for the yyys? maybe they'll come back soon though. i want tough! i did like how karen o kept yelling things all gutteral like -- like marg cho or something. re: maps, she was all like, THIS SONG IS ABOUT LUUUUUUUUUUURVE! i still love her.
devo was a trip. devo fans were even trippier. i liked how they ended their set with "a beautiful world" and it was all feel good. i called cameron to let him hear it all and he was all like, "why do they sound like elmo?" ahahahahaha! then as soon as their set ended, the rain poured forth from the heavens as if on cue. craziness. i was drunk on heineken and amstel lights, and making my way home in the wettest pair of vans you ever saw. so nasty!!! but that's new york in the summertime.

my heart is made of gravylately i've been eager to get out of new york city. i know i'm not alone in this feeling. this feeling that new york city just swallows you up into this big wind tunnel and all that you can do to save yourself is get the fuck out. but i haven't done that yet... though i'll be heading out on the road with the band. believe me, i can't fucking wait!
other than that i've been trying to keep myself busy and loaded. during fourth of july i spent much of the day lazying around with katy and stephanie of va. at some point i was able to drag them out to bedford to buy frozen fruits for my daiquiri binge. yes, i've become obsessed with making alcoholic drinks with my blender. a summertime delight for sure. mmmmm. along bedford we ran into the lovely jo and later on the bishop allen kids. such nice peeps. then i biked it over to george's house and found him, along with joe, stuck on the couch watching the sonic youth dvd that george bought. then george and i headed over to this girl eunice's rooftop party in greenpoint. we brought a bottle of makers and a bottle of ginger ale and had ourselves a party with like 500 other people. it was pretty fucking awesome. we eventually ran into some of the gang -- joe, greg, christy, ryan and other people within that circle. i got wasted really quickly and trudged home to pass out. this is to be me calling card for the next month, i think.
i haven't been going to many shows lately because frankly i don't have too much free time, and when i do have it, i find myself rather hanging out with friends i haven't seen that much. but at the same time, i'm also busy working on tons of other crap. i think i just always overbook myself, but at least i have my priorities sorta figured out.
i'm also finding that i can't bee happy all the time. fuckin a! during the hot summer days, i just want to lie down in some grassy field and dream of a world where smiles come hand in hand with sweet handshakes and affectionate hugs. a world where being alone ain't so bad. a world where people aren't so self-involved... where is that world, and how do i get my rocket there?
i also accepted jay's invitation to make up with his bailins. so i rolled on over to 186 to chill out with him and his funny roommates. i ran into adira there. everyone was drinking wine and cheese, and jay had the united states of america cranked on his stereo. i experienced a knifer for the first time. glorious. then we all walked to this bento box place somewhere on second avenue with all of this amazing food for a great price. don't remember what it's called, but i'm sure jay will fill us all in. on the way back to 186, we see all the people outside of mercury lounge for the delays. said hello to brian and moved along to eat our grub. i got my polaroid added to jay's infamous wall. i told him the photos looked like the cover of that vice book, and he declared he came up with the idea first. word. jay threw on "club dread" and i almost vomited at how bad the movie was.
luckily i didn't have to watch the entire movie. i left shortly to see the winter pageant at sin-e, and let me tell you that their music did not help my downtrodden mood any. i always want to cry when i listen to them. but it's ok, i was actually not looking to be cheered up. sometimes it's therapeutic to be glum. just as long as you don't hurt anyone else along the way. i left halfway through the rosebuds' set because i literally couldn't stay awake any longer, not because they were bad or anything. they were quite good and more energetic than i thought their music would be. i want to check them out again...
last friday i also ended up making daiquiris for a bunch of friends that came over... susan, carol, anna, ryan, will beck, gorman?, christy, dj, doug, emma... am i forgetting anyone? we hung for a lil bit. some of us headed to ryan the girl's birthday party. jenna met up with us there. it was pretty fun, but i fell into another sour mood and ran home to chill out where there weren't strange people. then i ended up going out again later to another party... forget who, but it was a block from my apartment so i said, what the hay. then i spent the next hour watching dj's best friend christy freestyle rapping with two other dudes. i watched in amazement with my mouth wide open. how does someone have that much energy!!!??? it was awesome.
saturday i went to siren fest and it was a fucking party. i wasn't sure it would turn out so well, but the the fact that i had so many friends around me the entire time was pretty fucking rad. i ran into dj, sung bin, fon lin, anna, dt, noah, jo, bidi, cameron, peter, keith a, autumn, jay disquieter, but not jay goodtimes! jco and hope who i haven't seen in ages!! matthew* of course rocking out to the fever. john martin, sarah, and that whole crew of jo's. audrey. dawn. i know i'm forgetting people. but in short, everyone was there! and that made siren a blast. some of us took some time to ride the wonder wheel, and those swinging cars are fucking fun as shit. all of the bands were amazingly, but i particularly hold blonde redhead close to my heart. there are few bands out there that i could say are a complete soundtrack to my life... blonde redhead is one of them. there is such inherent sadness to their music, a sadness that completely explains me, soothes me, comforts me. too bad i had to miss mission of burma due to my blonde redhead addiction. i'll talk about the other bands in another post.
today anna and i had lunch at the falafel place. after lunch i found out that anna and i had just missed someone committing suicide. literally minutes after we walked past this building, someone had jumped and splattered onto the ground. we didn't see it, but one of my coworkers were apparently walking not far behind us and saw the body on the ground, covered up in a yellow blanket, shoe sticking out and a growing pool of blood. how many times have we all wanted to just end our lives in public like that? suicide seems like almost too intimate an act to display in public. all of the darkness we keep to ourselves is all of a sudden on display for anyone who happens to walk by. it's their final plea, i suppose. it's like, look at who i am. notice me. care for me. but you're already dead. so what's the point?

so wha happened?
ok i've been getting a lot of questions about what happened on saturday. well, dirty on purpose didn't back out of the show as people were being told even on saturday evening... we did get a phone call from the new year telling us they were sorry about what happened -- apparently knitting factory overbooked the night, including some kind of weird party before the new year show, and one band had to get dropped from the bill. because of the party, the new year didn't even get a soundcheck, apparently, which is totally bogus. fucking bedhead! of course it sucks that all of this had to happen 2 days before the show... hopefully everyone was able to get a refund if you were seeking one. thanks to everyone for their support! the next dop show will be on july 30 at office ops for superfun rock/n/rollerskating fun! bring your skates or rent one! au revoir simone and circle and square will also be playing. it's the start of the dop tour, so come and celebrate with us! word! my little danish friend
a bunch of us went to see metallica: some kind of monster last night... it was one of the funniest movies i've seen in a while. probably funnier than anchorman. my favorite line was when dave mustaine was in a therapy session with lars...
dave: do you know what i went through?
lars: i can imagine what i put you through.
dave: you're not hearing me. do you know what i WENT through?
lars: [rubs his face]
dave: i miss my little danish friend.
or the exchange was something like that. seeing a band dissected like that was crazy. it was crazy when they were like, rob, please be our bassist -- here's a million dollars in advance! shit!! it was crazy to know their therapist was earning more a month than i earn in a year. beejezuz.

dirty on purpose with the new year
hmmm... here's a little self-promotion. dude, it's my blog. it's all about self-pimpin'.
Hey Peeps,
Dirty on Purpose is playing on Saturday, July 10, with the New Year (x Bedhead), VietNam and Mazarin at NYC's Knitting Factory (79 Leonard St).
We would love to see your purdy lil faces in the audience, front and center, whoopin' and hollerin' and yelling "We Love DoP!" ever so raucously. Come celebrate this awesome bill with us.
Show starts at 10 p.m. and it's $12. We know, it's a lot of money, but you probably spent about that much to see a movie this past weekend, and we think this show will certainly entertain you more than Spider Man 2.
We think this show is gonna sell out... so buy tickets ahead of time at
knittingfactory.com.Labels: dirty on purpose
i love you golden blue
this past weekend was like being in some sort of weird comatose state. or drifting in a deep pool of water... scissor-kicking my way to nowhere in particular. it's like listening to sonic youth's "i love you golden blue" on repeat whle the sun warms my cheeks to a nice shade of rose.
on saturday night i hung out with anna, george, katy, stephanie of va, greg and ryan the girl. some of us checked out vaz at north six. what a fucking awesome show, including the end where paul knocked the microphone stand off the stage and mimed his thank you. vaz is heavy rock that foams at the mouth but over the last couple years, they have developed really catchy guitar lines that swerve around like race cars. how can a drummer and guitarist make such a full sound? i dunno, but that drummer is fucking outta his mind. he looks so possessed. blink and you'll miss way too much.
then we headed over to ryan's apartment... which is crazy. they have a swing and hammock. they usually leave their double doors open and people riding their bikes by think it's some sort of tropical bar. but no, it's a fucking apartment. so stop walking in! while we were lushing on puerto rican rum, a couple people just walked in. one of ryan's roommates were like, "who are you?" and they were like, "isn't this a party?" hahahahaha.
i had been wanting to ride my bike all weekend. finally got to a little bit on fourth of july. after making peach daiquiris with katy and stephanie of va, i rode my bike to greenpoint to meet up with george. george, joe and i ended up watching the sonic youth dvd that george bought. i still can't get over the video with macaulay culkin in it. disturbing to watch thurston moore bobbing heads and playing guitar with the red-lipped wonder.
then george and i headed to the rooftop party. we ran into christy and eventually greg and joe graced us with their presence. i got kinda smashed on makers and gingers. we watched the fireworks in awe. smiley faces with whiskers! we danced around with wimpy sparklers. we ate the bbq food that christy brought. then i was so tired i went home early and passed out. how was your J4 celebration?
then i re-read the griffin & sabine trilogy, which chris helped me locate. that story is so romantic. love those books!
the retropod... it's waterproof too
apparently this is no joke [from my coworker jon]
dj annabiotica guests on wbar with the notorious b.i.d.'s electric avenue!
here's the wacky playlist
when i figure our where the archived stream is, i'll post it here!
UPDATE: here is a link to the stream of the show... (nota bene: the mics in the studio weren't working right so if you don't hear anything between songs, just imagine bidi and anna goofing it up and screaming things like "who rocks the party that rocks the body?" the link will only be live for about a week.
ps. we did not play the strokes. that was bidi. har har har!! (ok, she says it was a request. fair nuff!)
your wish is my command
ok peeps. sorry i've been lax on the updates this week. indeed, it is true. i've been assed out. it's been a rough one! but now i'm back on track and want to share some fun stuff with you... if you're still into it.
i spent much of last night at band practice, preparing for the impending dirty on purpose tour coming up... if anyone can help us fill dates on august 5 or 6 (we currently have some leads in boston, rochester, providence and possibly chicago), let me know. word! george's brother, greg (pictured above), came to practice to let the music just soak in.
i also went to this new williamsburg bar after practice to drinky drink with dj. the bar is called funhouse and it was pumping some kind of weird mix of music -- anywhere from !!! to bad techno music. but the british bartender was nice and mixed the makers and ginger strong. and they showed these projections on the white walls -- and guess what? there was a whole segment with penguins! fyi to people not in the know, but i fucking adore penguins. jo told me that when they cry, they can turn their salty tears into fresh water. or something like that. plus, i heard they mate for life. plus, they're damn cute, so...
tonight i think i'm hitting a couple birthday parties... and then i'm not sure what i want to do for fourth of july. there are several rooftop parties that i've been graciously invited to... but it's funny when you think about how many of my friends don't peep together. so it's probably impossible for me to see all my lovely friends. boo!
in other news, noah and dt were remiss in informing me that modest mouse and the walkmen are touring the west coast together. for once, i am jealous pf the left coast. c'mon walkies, come back to nyc. we need some "RAT" up in herre, ya heard?
i also saw farenheit 9/11 on monday night. it was horribly depressing and i found myself crying several times. the movie was also kind of funny, but i think i was more annoyed with all of the wacky sound effects and musical emphases that michael moore was using to overscore his points. yeah, some of it was smart and witty, but other times, i felt like some obnoxious child was directing the documentary... er, film (it was far from an unbiased documentary). while i agree with a lot of what michael moore has to say, i think the way in which he expresses his opinions can be outlandish and over-the-top... which will turn a lot of people off. on the other hand, sometimes i think one has to be extreme to make an impression in people's minds. unfortunately, we americans are often too complacent and need to be shook. shook hard.
