'ello joe, where's my joe?

happy birthday, joe. thanks for teaching me bass, and hope you have a good one today. you deserve it!

dinner with a stranger?

last night i had such a chill evening. it was probably the first time in a while that i had the apartment to myself, and i was lucky enough to borrow katy's copy of mean girls. i made myself some dinner, some mix cds... listened to the new knife skills remixes on repeat. so tough.

then visited tom at trash -- he's taking over booking there (he used to book at the hook). i haven't seen him in so long, and i feel terrible for missing his birthday party the other day. i've been in a shit mood lately, and get like that. but last night, tom and i got all caught up, and i felt so happy that he'd be in my neighborhood regularly now. we reminisced about how it was total destiny to have met and hung out with each other so much in texas. we long to go back next year. it will be so much fun!

also, mike is moving to wburg too. that is something i never thought would happen. i feel like wburg is becoming more and more of a home and friendly community. it's something that makes me happy when i think about it. these gray days though, are really rippling my mood.

at around midnight, i threw in mean girls and was thoroughly entertained for a couple hours. i joined that blockbuster club that is like net flix (but a couple dollars cheaper), and i think i will finally catch up on my movie watching. there are so many movies i haven't seen. and i don't have even basic tv (just lots of fuzz), so unless i'm over at katy's place, i guess it'll be blockbuster nights here and there.

a total aside, anna sent me this link for if you ever don't want to eat dinner by yourself

or ever have too much gum lying around... where do people come up with these ideas?

rinsed in the rain

last night i was in the worst mood. i was at work until 9 p.m. and then ran over to rothko... but there was a band that lifted my spirits, if for nothing else, their energy. lio convinced me to stay and listen to them by describing them as brit rock. i was like, what the hey, i'm here, i'll stay for a couple. thank god i did. the rinse. thanks lio for making me stay. sometimes i need a kick like that, especially these days when i'm working 16 hour days.

it wasn't really that they were completely original, but they had the energy and kind of "fuck let's have some fun" spirit that i was lacking that evening. it was like osmosis. i needed that bit of optimism, the kind of lift that only some people can give you. if you get my drift.

also, completely random thought: the bass player looked like a shorter, more rugged blonde redhead twin. totally amazing.

i was at the show to see a band my friend manages called cousin. the band has changed a lot since i first saw them, which was quite a while ago. they're not really my thing in terms of music, but i see a lot of potential for them. they are a fusion of soul, jazz and rock -- their greatest asset is their ability to shift smoothly between those genres within a song. with brendan rockin' it for this band, i can tell they're on the right track. kudos!

the other band i ended up seeing last night was called this blue holiday. this is another band that i had seen a while ago, and another band who has grown tighter musically. for some reason, they kept reminding me of dt's band, circle and square. does anyone else see/hear that? they were like a younger, trl-friendly circle and square. in any case, they're not exactly the kind of music i listen to, but i can tell these kids have been working really hard to improve, and i can at least appreciate that. being in a band takes so much energy, not only to create the music, but also being able to let any hesitation on stage, and be in the moment. that guitarist knew how to do that, and it was fun to watch him throw himself all over the stage. but where was marc, who tried to drag me to their show at the hook? dude, you're totally obsessed with this band, but i didn't see you last night. it must be closing time at the mag, eh?

today's capricorn horoscope

Your Horoscope for September 28, 2004
CAPRICORN
You have a right to be proud of what you have achieved and no one else has the right to say you should have done more or you should have done better. You will almost certainly come in for criticism of some kind today, but if you are smart, you will ignore it completely. At best it is misguided; at worst, it is sour grapes.
from the ny post

the arcade fire: funeral

i figure if anyone still reads my site besides jay and anna, they are nerdy kids who like music. whee, like me, eh? so i wholly recommend (along with a million other music peeps) the arcade fire, for those of you who like musical stories that sweep you up in mystical mists, out-of-touch dreams and vocals yearning to be heard... this album is epic. so good. thank you.

exile in guyville

no matter what her new music sounds like, liz phair's classic exile in guyville is still fucking good. but listening to it is like emotional suicide.

it's only like a 10 minute distraction from work. try making yourself

i'm not sure if this looks like me. maybe add like 25 pounds. not everyone is a friggin' japanime character.

anyhoo... what have i been doing... friday night the show went well, but i was running on like 3 hours of sleep. thursday night i had hung out with jo for the first part of the evening. i tried to catch sam champion at pianos, but got there too late (goddamnit). then i was gonna watch death from above (who were playing under "look out below") but decided to try and get away from the enormous crowd (i am claustrophobic). noah, ryan and i went to meet up with jay and the gang at plant bar, or whatever it is called now. i found i out that i actually knew the girl who owned the bar. and i also ran into a college friend at the bar, who used to date the owner's college roommate -- if you can follow that...

we left the bar for jay's place. smoked too much. i discovered captain morgan tastes like candy. then i passed out. the next day, i woke up, went to brooklyn, showered and got dressed and circled right back to work. this all seems very boring to me now that i'm typing it out. sorry, but this is how my mind wanders...

friday was fun at knitting factory, and i met some really cool people, including some stoner russian groupies of pilot to gunner. they tried in vain to steal my lilac lighter for their drug purposes (as they giggled at each other and took digital pictures of each other smoking from the pipe. don't worry i got my lighter back.

everyone who played was pretty awesome. i really enjoyed the roger sisters' cover of "driven to tears." miyuki is a punk rock star because he just let's go on stage and goes wild. the sisters were also so tough and fierce, i was envious. they are the kinda girls i would love to be.

shy child were also really good. parts + labor were really good. beans was really good. pilot to gunner were really good. i guess you could say, everyone was really good, and friendly. what more can you really ask for?

i spent all day saturday watching katy's movies: old school and prey for rock and roll. old school was good. prey for rock and roll, not so much. best line: "is this a rock and roll intervention?"

on sunday, i was woken up by george: "yo get the fuck up! it's 1:30!" george and i hung out pretty much all day on sunday. we made sandwiches and watched some video footage i had taken on friday night. then we headed into the city and went to see "the forgotten". that movie was wack and cheesy. i kept laughing at all the "scary" parts. damn. i need to do more research before heading to the theaters. then later that night, i made dinner for everyone, and then headed to tonic to see slow six, george's friend's band. they were really wonderful and spacey. i found myself getting lost in my own thoughts... kinda depressing actually.

we got to see part of another cool act though that was experimental improvisation: shelley hirsch doing some crazy avant garde scatting with a dry mic, a reverb and chorus mic and a mic set to a delay pedal. she was accompanied by an even crazier but awesome cellist named okkyoung lee. girl could make some great music that seemed both scattered and deliberate, but looked like she was playing with all parts of her arms and hands. amazing.

i love that song "breathe"

hippity hoppity

i don't really know hip-hop that well, but i really dig the new talib kweli album, the beautiful struggle. i can't stop listening to it. maybe i'm just sick of indie rock. i can't tell.

fxxxing lion @ trash

i had no idea what i was in store for when i walked into trash. i thought i did. but i didn't. go figure. rock'n'roll is never predictable, and this time i was pleasantly rocked out by anna's new project, fxxxing lion. holy shit. i'm still trying to recover. i had gone to see them on friday at rockstar bar... and i didn't know what to think of them then. but then i saw them at trash last night, and i was so into it. their music had the spastic, dancey punk quality of old liars songs. joe somar, the lead singer, nerded out in black plastic frames and thrift store sweaters, went all out tonight, and entertained me without getting naked (which i hear he does, but have yet to see). tia impressed me with her catchy as fuck guitar lines. where were those coming from? they were awesome and made me wanna dance and pour beer on everyone. conrad was also fun to watch as he swayed and swaggered all over the stage, his jacket slipping down little by little. it was nice to see them all rocking out and having fun -- letting go. i haven't seen a show like this in ages, and it was so fun! i felt like i was 16 years old discovering punk rock for the first time.

on a side note today, the guy who handed me my am new york this morning said, "have a good day at school!"

do i really look that young?

anyhoo, fxxxing lion's next show is at the north six basement with mommy and daddy and the alarmist on october 11. show starts at 9 p.m. i'll remind you closer to the date because it's going to be hot stuff!

numb fingers, beating heart

Yes, peeps, I'm still alive. But my left pointy finger is still a little numb. Why? This past weekend, I learned to play a song on bass. A bunch of us went into the practice space on saturday, and joe taught me how to play a song... It was rad. But now finger feels half dead. How do you do it, DJ?

Anyhoo, last week I also attended that modest mouse show at webster hall thanks to the good will of one dt (thanks, babe). However my vip pass didn't get me any free drinks (oh well).

I started off the pre-show festivities relaxing at jay's youth hostile, with the likes of noah from sam champion and jay's roommates, kyle and builder. I had to leave shortly afterwards to meet up with jo at hifi. Our intention was to play some pool, but we ended up just sitting in a booth, talking. Eventually a coupla friends joined us -- garrett, juliet and doug.

Then we headed over to webster hall and ran into the youth hostile crew. The lot of us walked over. While I was happily surrounded by like 50 of my closest friends (ha), I was not graced by any air conditioning. What's up with that, webster? So I enjoyed much of the last half hour of modest mouse right outside the room. But I was super happy when they played "float on." It was such a happy anthem. It put me in bright spirits.

That is until the drunk frat boys standing next to me started to bother jo and I. One of them had their arm strewn across in front of me so there was nowhere for me to go. Desspite what you may or may not think, I'm not used to being cornered by guys at a rock show. Luckily, jo was there to protect us. She rocks!

One note: what's up with isaac brock giving h&m a plug during the show? Will franz ferdinand soon talk about top shops, and will the yeah yeah yeahs start doing commercials for the gap? Think about it kids, its not that far-fetched, methinks.

Friends playing shows this week:
Tuesday, September 21:
** Hightower Smith @ Vicious (Rothko)
** Fxxxing Lion, Shellshocked @ Trash
** On!Air!Library! @ Tonic

Thursday, Sept. 23:

the weekend that made me weak

friday, sept. 10
i had such nervous energy in my stomach on friday night in preparation for dirty on purpose's show at mercury lounge. i had tons of people coming to the show, and before the show even started it was very close to being sold out. wowza! we were goofballs downstairs before the show started. some peeps from pela and some peeps from dop began to sing neutral milk hotel's "holland, 1945." i can't believe everyone remembered the lyrics to that song. it was like we were just pumping up for the show and paying tribute to one of our favorite bands at the same time.

when we headed upstairs for pela's set, guess what the house was playing? none other than aeroplane over the sea. it's like they knew what we were doing, and decided to play along. sweet!

this was pela's second show in a long time. they've been working on new songs and recordings, and are starting to venture out into the open again. i have to say they played a stellar, energized set, in typical pela fashion. some of the arrangements of their songs were different from the recorded stuff i had, but it didn't bother me too much. they received many well deserved whoops and hollas.

before dirty on purpose hit the stage, i was trembling. i feel like we have been preparing for this show forever. they played mostly new, unrecorded songs -- only playing "cheat death" and "girls & sunshine" from the sleep late for a better tomorrow ep. it's amazing that they can keep changing their set so much with each show because they keep writing really awesome songs. their catalogue is pretty impressive for a band that has only two eps out. i'd say they have at least 20 songs to work with when they plan a set list out, and that's pretty effing hawt! it just makes me anxious for them to record more. their set was killer though, and they nailed each song with grace. i was surrounded by love -- all of our friends had shown up to rawk out and support, and it made me feel like i was getting a big hug. so cool.

lots of hugs to johnny and maggie from mercury lounge. they are the bizzestest. xoxoxoxoxoxo

afterwards, i headed over to eric from say hi to your mom's birthday party at union pool in williamsburg. there were TONS of people there. it was hard to move around. but eventually people trickled out. i spent most of the night talking with doug's friend brendan, who wants to direct a dirty on purpose music video. he told me about his trip to honduras. HONDURAS. this kid has been everywhere, and i was jealous. i haven't even left the country yet -- unless you count going to niagra falls in middle school... and i don't count that. i need to get a passport and get the eff outta here. just for a vacay.

i was briefly greeted by joe's independently wealthy friend daniel sasse. i love this guy. he greets you with a kiss on your cheek. he introduces people like so:
joe = the amazing joe jurewicz
george = gorgeous george
jin = jin spelled with a "j"

that's what makes him tops. plus, the fact that his name is daniel sasse, and you can't possibly refer to him as anything but.

after union pool kicked us out, we wandered over to kelloggs for some disgusting late-night grub. i had some french fries... but they weren't very good. but we had good table banter so all in all, it was a great night.

saturday, sept. 11
there's something about sitting in my lil' breadbox in the wilds of williamsburg on a saturday night that makes me antsy pantsy. it had nothing to do with the fact that it was sept. 11 and there were two ominous, somber beams in the sky, reminding us of days more terrible. it was just one of those new york nights -- nights that call out your name -- nights that beckon you to ravage the city, even if there's nothing going on that you really want to do. it's simply the desire to connect with other people and possibly further your friendships. and i accepted the challenge.

i ventured off to a keg party that jay talked about in williamsburg. it was some girl's birthday party... dee, kyle's girlfriend. juliet and i were the strange asian chicks in the corner who didn't know anyone except for jay, builder and noah. we were thinking of bolting the party when jay finally came over and paid attention to us. thanks jay. juliet and i didn't want to drink beer, so we wandered over to khim's deli and got a cheap bottle of wine. dude, that shit was narsty. but we drank it and started to feel buzz. jay was entertaining his friend whitney. i felt sorry for the boy -- he was stuck at some low-key birthday party in williamsburg, when he was really all dolled up to go party with jarvis cocker at misshapes. he had on a black button-down and a red tie. he was ready to shake his ass. so i convinced jay to take him to misshapes. juliet worked her magic and we zoomed into the club and started dancing. audrey was on the wheels. she played an excellent set. so did the tarts of pleasure, aka sarah and karen. how fun! people were moshing. my sneakers got all dirty. i was spilling alcohol everywhere. it was awesome.

somehow we ended up back at the birthday party in williamsburg. doing shots of beer? i couldn't really finish one. then all of a sudden, kyle was on one side of me, dee was on the other side of me, and they were barraging me with questions. what nationality am i? do i like korean food? do i speak korean? it was 5 in the morning and i was trashed. i was like, what the hell!?!? do i have to think at all? i went home and went to sleep.

sunday, sept. 12

the aftermath of that party was bad though. i went to sleep at 6 a.m. and didn't wake up until 5:30 in the afternoon. just enough time to stuff some food in my stomach (i hadn't eaten since brunch the previous day and was more starved than mary kate) and head over to george's birthday party at union pool. it was cool to see a bunch of friends get together to celebrate the huggy wonder of gorgeous george. he was in good spirits. juliet made him a crown out of newspaper and i kissed it with her pink chanel lipstick. all hail george, king of the jungle! it was a great night for me, as i started managing dirty on purpose pretty much since george's last birthday. i remember going to his birthday party last year at union pool and thinking, i hardly know these people, but they are so warm and welcoming! happy birthday, babe.

the futureheads

my new obsession is... the futureheads. i never really got the franz ferdinand thing... sorta, but not really. but i GET the futureheads. they are as much fun as blur, but with a garage rock sensibility. how HAWT. they are playing at rothko as part of lio's crashinin party. go go go go! i think i'm in love with that guy in the glasses. is he the singer?

les savy fav @ irving plaza tonight

hey peeps, les savy fav is playing irving plaza tonight, and i found out through the rheingold newsletter. dt, you are slacking in your show updates! or i am really fucking out of it. oh yeah, i guess it is the latter. lsf is playing with another local fave, the detachment kit, and another band called smoke and smoke. hmmm, i think i know what they mean by smoke and smoke.

come out and rock out with tim and all the crazy rockers. rock and roll has never been this fun. for realz.
show starts at 8 p.m.

afterparty is at lit at 1 a.m. free bud and well vodka drinks with your ticket stub from the show. according to french kiss records, "The bands will be there, Frenchkiss will be there, Paris and Nikki will be there, it'll be ragin."

music is no labor

it was really fucking hot outside on saturday. i woke up in a daze after sleeping only 5 hours -- i had been up till 6 a.m. on friday. i ran up to columbia university with juliet, and got there just in time for the walkmen set at the columbia concerts series at the ivy league library steps. the first thing i said was, where the hell is everyone? it seemed like the space was pretty empty. but then i realized i was surrounded by college freshman who probably didn't know who the walkmen were. i was in good spirits though, and i was dancing all around when i saw bidi in the crowd. sweet. the walkies did not play "that's the punchline" or "french vacation" but they did play "wake up" and a modern lovers cover. the next day, the band left for their tour with incubus. yes, incubus. and if you haven't heard, the walkmen are gonna be on the OC. i think there's an actual line in the show that says, "hey, let's head over to the walkmen show." wow! so weird, but strangely cool and reminiscent of 90210 and the peach pit.

i spent most of the weekend in the practice space with joe, george and greg. we would go there really late at night when we were drizzunk. joe let me play his guitar, and i think i've fallen in love with it. but boy, let me tell you -- i suck at playing guitar! but now i'm kinda addicted to it. i love the way that joe's guitar sounds though -- it's got this sad but beautiful tone -- so perfect. thanks for letting me play! we should do that more often.

i have finally made the mix for the southpaw jukebox. i've been handing it out to people, and soon it should be in the southpaw jukebox for your listening pleasure. and if you want a copy of your own, come to the dirty on purpose show this friday at mercury lounge and i'll have a bunch on the merch table for free. it has a lot of my favorite songs on it, and i haven't been able to stop listening to it because it makes me so friggin happy. and apparently everyone i've given it to has said the same to me. i love sharing music! however, after the dop show on friday, i will not hand out anymore. limited edition. haha.

i beat annie at scrabble this weekend. we are such word nerds. after the chez dop bbq, i was going to head over to movies on the roof -- they were going to watch commando and weird science, but decided to go bikeriding with joe, george and annie. joe, george and i then went over to alligator lounge, where they give you a small pizza pie if you buy a beer. south park was on with captions, and we dazed off.

and yes, i finally listened to the m83 album this weekend. amazing. thanks to all who recommended it. that includes you, tom. and to doug, who owned the album and played it for me at the chez dop bbq.
