important information about voting...

this is a repost from byron:

Here's an important heads up ...

Yesterday a friend voted early at a polling location in Austin. She voted straight Democratic. When she did the final check, lo and behold every vote was for the Democratic candidates except that it showed she had voted for Bush/Cheney for president/vice pres.

She immediately got a poll official. On her vote, it was corrected. She called the Travis County Democratic headquarters.
They took all her information, and told her that she wasn't the first to report a similar incident and that they are looking into it.

So check before you leave the polling booth, and if anything is wrong, get it corrected immediately. Report any irregularities to your
local Democratic headquarters. Make sure you pass this along to your friends ... hopefully this is all over the airwaves by tomorrow ...

The Texas voting fraud is for real.
I called the Austin office (Dem. Nat. Comm.) 512-637-1737
and they said that it has been happening a lot. They don't know why but the machines seem more "sensitive" this year and that every voter MUST check their summary as the presidential choice often rolls over to the republican choice if you vote straight
democrat

scary stories

ok, maybe halloween is scary, but not in that traditional horror flick kind of way. in the i-might-party-too-much-and-puke-my-guts-out-or-die kind of way. so, yeah, i am kind of scared of what this weekend has in store for me. my life has been SUPER lowkey for the past few weeks that i'm not sure that i can handle all of the party that this weekend promises. i might wimp out. i might dive in. who knows? i leave it up to fate.

here's all of the amazing shit that is up for this weekend. holy moly.

BE ANOTHER BAND FOR HALLOWEEN
hey brooklynites, christy from cheeseburger has put together a SPECTACULAR night of rock. he had a bunch of bands dress up as another more band for halloween and they will perform as that band!! this sounds like the most interesting "halloween" themed thing happening tonight. and best of all... IT'S FREE. the order of the bands is random, so get there on time to not miss your favorite band. here are the details, christy likes exclamation points:
** Oasis (brother VS brother!!!)
** Creedence Clearwater Revival (they're back from they bayou!!!)
** Poison (nothin' but a good time!)
** Black Flag!!! (slip it in...cuz they're wasted again!)
** Duran Duran (hungry like the wolf they are!)
** The Ramones ( gabba gabba hey!)
** Super Rad Guest DJ'S (You'll love them!!!)
@ Laila, 113 N.7th @ Berry (Right off the Bedford L stop in wburg)
Door - 9 pm
Show - 10 pm
FREE

GLOW IN THE DARK
here's another hot show for my fellow brooklynites. Other Passengers and Dirty Churches are playing at Tommy's Tavern. This is going to be insane for sure. Show starts at 8 p.m. Then you can follow the band to see Hula at some loft party near Pete's Candy Store. (members of Hula are in Dirty Churches so just ask them where it is at the show). if you wear a costume, it's $5 cover. if you don't wear a costume, it's $7. Tommy's Tavern is in Greenpoint (1041 Manhattan ave. @ corner of Freeman st.).

PIANOS ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND
Pianos is celebrating another anniversary. Has it been that long? Some cool bands are playing here tonight. Fighterpilot goes on early at 8 p.m. followed by performances by some cool local faves like El Jezel, Surefire and Blue Sparks! Don't forget to say hello to Jasper who put the night together. It's $8. The Blue Sparks afterparty will be at Motor City which is somewhere near Pianos on Ludlow

WALKMEN @ WEBSTER HALL
this is a no-brainer. be there and say hello to Jay who is working the list/door. then get up close and jump up and down for the walkmen. you know them, i don't have to tell you how awesome they are. i don't know who the other acts are, but i think they are mostly for the hippies. HOWEVER, please note that the band will probably go on about 9:30. it's an early show so get there early.

other passengers, hopewell, mike watt & the secondmen @ mercury lounge tonight

i haven't seen hopewell, but other passengers and mike watt and the secondmen are amazing and awesome. i was really blown away by the insaneness that embodies mike watt and the secondmen. it took me by surprise during cmj. one of the standout performances -- bands as CRAZY as this one don't really exist anymore. the instrumentation is like being on psychedelic drugs. in the end you are left woozy.

other passengers will make you just as dizzy but slightly more depressed. they are overwhelming in their capacity to twirl you around and leave you fallen on the floor. they play at mercury lounge tonight. go go go!

get there early, it's going to sell out.

the walkmen @ webster hall this friday!

hey peeps, the walkmen are playing at webster hall this friday. you know if you haven't bought tickets to the show yet, you are insane. they are hands-down one of the best bands to come out of new york in quite a while. don't be foolish. everyone who pretended to like you is not gone. they're at the walkmen show. buy tickets here.

tattooooo

so i'm thinking about getting another tattoo. but choosing something that will permanently be on your person is a huge decision that involves much thought. i thought perhaps i could get the cool OTM logo that garrett made for me with all the little twinkling stars. that would be kinda cool. i could have the moon-guitar in the center of my back with the stars surrounding on either side...? but i wonder if i would regret it when i'm 60. eh, probably not. i would probably forget that it's there! do any of you have tatts? and if so, what are they and what do they mean to you?

so is pitchfork the new rolling stone?

the title of this post came from a cmj panel description that i thought was pretty funny. did anyone go to the one about music blogs? i think scott from stereogum.com had posted something about going. i have no idea. i'm outta the loop. whatever.

also, i'm glad to see the modern age has quit "temp" life and is now back in full force. yay, now maybe i'll get back into the loop. i'll just refer to laura! just like the good ol' days. sweet.

in news you already know...

the arcade fire/hidden cameras/dirty on purpose show at bowery ballroom is sold out. for those of you who got tickets in advance, kudos to you. you were smart or psychic -- take your pick. luckily i bought like 10 tickets to the show before it sold out, and if i have extras left over after i work out the list sitch, i will give away some through the dirty on purpose mailing list. so join the band's email list and be on the lookout for a special email giving away a pair of tickets...

Whew, It's Over

CMJ is over. Thank goodness. How did I get through it without getting sick?

Was it just me or did CMJ totally suck this year? Besides Arcade Fire and a slim selection of other bands, I and many others have concluded that the quality of bands in this year's music marathon was at an all-time low.

Contemplating this, I naturally asked myself why. The only thing I could think of was that the screening process must be partial to friends and who you know, not necessarily based on quality of bands or music. I actually know many bands that didn't get in to the festival -- bands that are top notch and buzzworthy. Hopefully, the festival will revise their screening process and make sure to actually put the focus back on accepting bands who deserve the spot. Otherwise no one is gonna want to attend the festival, and the significance of it will fall until it becomes laughed at. My motto has always been quality over quantity -- otherwise your reputation for good taste in music will plummet and no one will trust you when you say a band is good. But you already knew that.

on the moon music bands play cmj tonight!

so my horoscope last week said that october 15 would be a very special day in my life. i'm keeping my fingers crossed, and hoping that that particular "the planets are aligned" prediction comes true. two of my favorite bands in new york are playing the cmj music marathon tonight, and i hope that you come out and holla your support!

Knife Skills @ Lit Tonight!
@ Lit (www.litloungenyc.com)
8 p.m. // $7 // Free with a CMJ Badge

What can I say about Knife Skills that you haven't already heard from moi? Well, probably nothing. They are one of the toughest bands in NYC right now, and they are fronted by one of the coolest women in rock. Songs about abduction, teenage lust, and of course, Dennis Cooper and JT Leroy. As they sing, they simultaneously kick your ass too. That's talent. I heart this band. After their set, everyone is always like, "WHOA. I had no idea they were so tough!" plus, anna is the real reason i work in the music industry. it's amazing what one can do when she has talented people in the know around her. come scream out her name tonight with me tonight.

Dirty on Purpose @ Fez Tonight!
MARCH RECORDS PRESENTS...
7:30 - Graham Smith of Kleenex Girl Wonder
8:30 - Le Concorde (ex Psychedelic Furs)
9:30 - The Caulfield Sisters (haunting indie pop)
10:30 - Fancey (members of New Pornographers)
11:30 - Dirty on Purpose (you know the dilly)

@ Fez (www.feznyc.com)
380 Lafayette Street @ Great Jones
$12 // Free with Badge

Dirty on Purpose. I know I harp on about them all the time, but when you manage a band, it starts to take over your life. Especially when you also have a grueling day job. So if you're here reading about my life, well, here it is. I remember when I first saw DoP. It was in the electro cavern of luxx. They were practically the house band there, and I thought to myself, this band plays all the frickin time! And I ended up going to see them a few times. I really loved the haunting low key melodies at the time, but I knew the band needed more guidance. At the time I had been booking monthly parties at Luxx under the "On the Moon Music Presents..." banner. But I kind of got tired of booking, partly because it's a lot of work with little pay off and partly because there are just not enough good bands to book. after a while you start booking bands you don't even like or know of, and once that happened, i called it quits. my interest is not in personal fame or glory. it's in helping bands i really believe in. one of my personal heroes in new york is dawn, manager to my favorites, the walkmen. i aspire to be as kick ass a manager as she is. so i just kind of asked dop if they needed a manager. i was surprised they were so into the idea of having someone with no prior experience on their team, but there was something magical about the whole set up. we got along so well and had the same views on the future... and here we are one year later -- about to play cmj thanks to the generosity of skippy at march records for putting us on this amazing bill, and next month, a sold-out opening gig at bowery ballroom for our new favorite band, the arcade fire! i just can't believe it sometimes, i want to cry. i'm really grateful for everyone who has been supporting. i'm lucky to be surrounded by some solid, loyal friends who have pulled through for me. i always dreamed on the moon music would turn into a sort of art collective full of quality music, but even more than that -- quality people who are honest and giving. that is hard to find in this business, as i'm sure you've gathered. so peeps, i hope to see your smiling faces tonight. it's gonna be a killer show.

fired up

OK I AM COMPLETELY IN LOVE WITH ARCADE FIRE!

after last night's performance at the merge records showcase at mercury lounge, which was packed and sold out, i am with the thousands of other converted followers. arcade fire rules!!! i haven't seen pure, adrenaline-filled rock like that IN AGES. if i ever thought the music of today was uninspiring, i was proved wrong last night as me and a handful of others jumped up and down in jubilee, singing along to the epic cascades...

while i don't have time to do a full review today of the show, i do have a lil' announcement... bowery ballroom tells me the show will probably sell out today. TODAY. three weeks before the show!

so... if you want tickets, please buy them now. Click here. also the band is doing an in-studio performance today on kexp.org, so tune in and hear all the goodness.

and here's a sweet review from indieworkshop.com on the dirty on purpose ep, sleep late for a better tomorrow. we heart them for their kind words.

the band also got a nice review from the village voice... who compared them to the cure and the pixies. while i don't necessarily see the comparison, who would complain about those comparisons????

tonight, stop by the ascap cocktail party from 6 to 8 at the delancey rooftop. magnet and sondre lerche are playing. sweet!

loooooooong weekend

I spent much of this weekend by myself. By myself, meaning I spent a lot of time in the cave, surrounded by my own thoughts.

There weren't many phone calls.

There were a couple rock shows. Hot Snakes were amazing. Even better than I could have imagined. John Reis and Rick Froberg were amazing. As Reis and his rockabilly 'do shook it up on stage with some crazy, slithering guitar parts, Froberg commanded the attention of the audience with his guttural vocals and sweat popping performance. The kids were jumping and bumping for Hot Snakes. It was so animalistic.

They were so overwhelming. So much so that I left the show before they played my two favorites: "Why Does It Hurt" and "Plenty For All". I kinda regret that now, but sometimes after I see something like that, I get in a daze and wander home like a zombie.

Morrissey last night at Radio City caused a different kind of hysteria. He opened with "How Soon Is Now?" His name flashed behind him in huge red lights. We couldn't see the "M" so we kept shouting "Orrissey!" He got tackled by a crazy fan and didn't miss a beat, just kept singing. He sang, "The more you abhor me, the closer I get." He gave a shout out to Nancy Sinatra. He changed his shirt four times: purple, blue, white, dark blue. He would also say things like, "Why are you all staring at me? Not fair!" Then during the middle of the encore, "There is a light," he stopped and said, "shit, double shit, security sucks" or something like that and then said "that's it, goodbye." I think security was being rough with some fans who were attempting to rush the stage. He did not play "Suedehead" but he did play a lot of other hits. He played "bigmouth" at like twice the speed. That shit was lightning fast!

A lot of muted IM conversations. Much smoking. 10 mosquito bites.

I got inspired by the female character Lenia in John Cassavetes' improv'd movie Shadows.

I skimmed through Plato's Symposium and started reading Plato's Lysis. All of this Socratic reading has me thinking a lot about the relationship between friendship and love. What is friendship and what is love? And what happens when they overlap or morph from one to another?

what the fuck?!?

Salon.com reports that Bush had a radio receiver taped to his back during the first debate so he could receive messages via a tiny hearing-aid-like device in his ear. They back this up with a photo.

the debate

if you wanna watch the debate and don't have a tv like me, you can watch it at the following places in wburg:

enids
pete's candy store
funhouse
ryan the girl's house

that's all i know of.

let me know if you know of any other places.

like a nuclear bomb

i had so much fun at shy child yesterday at rothko. this duo's songs just make me smile uncontrollably. they are like danceable video game music with a touch of the rapture. i wore my "awesome" necklace just for the special dose of keytar and drummer happiness. and then when they brought out that saxophonist, i let out a tiny squeal. the drummer, nate, does look like noah... except noah never takes his shirt off in sweaty abandon. this record is definitely a must-have. it's one of the stand-outs of the year. my photo above was taken at their show for the urgh tribute at knitting factory. they covered devo's "uncontrollable urge." very fitting!

also a note from anna:
just a reminder that open house ny is this weekend--when various landmarks and awesome nyc buildings in all the boroughs are open free to the public. last year, deron and i hit the masonic lodge in chelsea, and the greenwood cemetary catacombs.

check out the schedule online, and get out into the sunshine and see some sights--

holy moly

ok every once in a while anna sends me my horoscope from some website or another... and this time she sent me one from astrology zone. reading it kind of freaks me out. it even says october 15 will shine brightly for me career-wise. that's the night when both the bands i manage (knife skills and dirty on purpose) are playing their cmj showcases. creepy?

best date nights are oct. 1, 10 and 11. oh really? moz, here i come. "so close your eyes, and think of someone you physically admire. and let me kiss you..."

misery! i'm dead too!

rocktober is shaping up nicely! i haven't set my cmj schedule yet, but when i do i'll let ya know. then we will go and check out bands together. it will be fun. i can't wait! who else is going around cmj? who should i go see? i have so much to catch up on. be kind and let me know.

friday
explosions in the sky, the winter pageant @ mercury lounge
oh man, this is gonna be a good one. sad, but good.

saturday
hot snakes @ north six
this band makes me want to punch somebody. it slithers and bites, no apologies.

sunday
moz @ radio city hall
do i even need to say anything about this show other than, holy moly.
i'm going with anna and we're gonna throw roses and be completely ridiculous.
maybe even plunge to our swooning deaths.

anyways, here is a moz song that i am kinda diggin right now and thought y'all might enjoy: "i like you"

"you're not right in the head! and nor am i! and this is why! i like you! i like you! i like you!" moz always knows how to say it with ridiculous abandon.

or if you feel like shit, watch this, it will make you smile:
strindberg and helium
"helium!" and "misery!" and "i'm dead too!"

yes, an oldie, but a goodie.

other passengers at rothko tomorrow

one of my favorite local acts, other passengers, are playing a last minute gig at rothko tomorrow night. they go on at 11. wish billy a belated birthday!

shy child is playing rothko on thursday. i believe it is their record release party. they are really good live -- the dude plays a keytar! and their drummer is one of the best. definitely worth checking out.

i also hope you bought tickets for the explosions in the sky show at mercury lounge this friday (october 8) because it is sold out! the winter pageant are playing, as well as we ragazzi -- two really awesome local acts.

also, i'm told that tickets are selling really fast for the arcade fire/hidden cameras/dirty on purpose show at bowery ballroom... so fast that they think it will sell out way in advance. that's pretty frickin' awesome, but i don't want anyone who wants to go to get shut out. so if people want tickets to the show, buy 'em now. you can get tickets at the mercury lounge box office, or online at ticketweb.

playing kings in the capital city

there was much fun to be had in dc. so much to share, but with limited time, i will share my new favorite drinking game:

the game: kings
what you need: one full deck of cards, plastic cup
set up: shuffle cards and spread around a plastic cup
players: best with 3-5 people
rules: each person takes turns drawing a card from the spread
the commands of each card:
2/3 = dole out drinks to players however you want (ie: draw a 2 and make steph drink one and matt drink one or make matt drink two)
4 = whores (girls drink)
5 = social (everyone drinks)
6 = dicks (guys drink)
7 = person to your right drinks
8 = person to your left drinks
9 = bust a rhyme (start a line of rhyme, next person has to say another rhyme. person who messes up first drinks)
10 = storytelling (start with one word, next person repeats your word and adds a word until someone messes up)

thanks for not banning gay marriages

I just wanted to say that I'm happy the senate was short 49 votes in passing that bill to make it a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriages. "God created adam and eve, He didn't create adam and steve," said republican senator roscoe bartlett, according to the ap. Well what about separation of church and state? And those of us americans that don't believe in god, but believe in freedom of choice and the pursuit of happiness as long as it doesn't infringe on others safety and well being? Go suck on that.

get outta town!

amidst all the birthday parties going on this weekend, i am fleeing the city for suburban life in maryland. can't wait to see stephie, it's been so long!

however, i do want to say happy birthday to jo. thanks for being a great friend. one of a kind, pingu!

i looked at the show schedules going on in DC... and i didn't see any band playing that i recognized... that's not surprising considering i live in the new york bubble. so anyhoo, not that i need to go see a show or anything, but if you want to recommend me some shows to check out or at least venues or bars to visit, please share.

i'm also bringing my blockbuster-movies-via-mail with me. so far i have received:
1) party monster: the shockumentary
2) shadows
3) badlands (noah recently inspired me to watch this movie again)

and i also think i want to go see i <3 huckabees.

awesome.
