Beating Machine is a drum machine that actually sounds like drums. Imagine that. In between the bands, Cocoa Cracker Brown, Shuga-Milk and Kenosha smash your whole shit up with their matching record collections. knit fit

my god, i spent all day knitting my big black nothing while watching project runway with heidi klum on bravo. this is what happens when i come home to cable tv in pennsylvania. the boob tube just zaps all of my energy. it made me want to buy that new victoria secrets pushup bra (with no padding) and sew some fabric together. boob tube, indeed.

now i am going to spend the rest of the night reading as much of joyce maynard's memoir, at home in the world, as i can before i fall asleep. i am just getting to the juicy parts about her relationship with j.d. salinger, aka jerry. as i'm reading about her life, there is so much i realize i have in common with joyce. it's really uncanny. and the reason i started reading it? my cousin told me that i would relate to joyce a lot. she was right. except i never slept with j.d. salinger. at least not to my knowledge.

also: i cannot wait to get back to new york. please welcome me back properly.

also: i will most likely be attending futureheads/shout out louds on tuesday... if the music gods don't throw a wrench into my social life as they tend to do. who else is going? tequila tuesday, peeps. let's celebrate.

also: knife skills will be heading down to sxsw. before they leave though you can catch them on wednesday, february 23 FOR FREE @ the death disco party at the delancey. they go on at 10:30. come and party.

bands and friends revisited

i decided to stay in town on friday to relax a little. just chill. i started the evening at home with susan and carol. then i headed over to see au revoir simone at sin-e. the girls are now three, instead of four. sung bin park has parted ways with the group. their song arrangements are slightly different as a result, and they're still working on strengthening their live show. but overall, you can't deny the potential of the songs. they are sometimes eery. sometimes cheery, and always sensual.

then doug and i went over to mercury lounge to check out bishop allen. i haven't seen these kids since the sup bbq performance this summer, and i was really excited to see them. boy, was i happy i went. their set was SO FUCKING SOLID. they really blew me away. i kept thinking, "wow is this really the same band i saw in a bushwick loft in 2002?" since the lovely c.o. joined the band, bishop allen have started arranging the songs differently, but the new arrangements are excellent and exciting. they have also come up with great ways to tie their songs together in between and eliminate a lot of set lulls. if you haven't seen them yet, you really got to check them out. especially if you love goofy, endearing, dorky pop.

then i got a call from christy. he was hanging with the usual suspects at capone's in wburg. i went over there to see what was up. saw greg. i must have missed george and ryan at some point. i saw oliver. and i met a bunch of peeps, including oliver and greg's roommate who just bought a digital camera and was a little snap-happy. i swear he took the most unflattering photo of me, and i chased him around the bar to try and delete it, but to no avail. i plead with you, please delete that photo. pretty please?

i ran into chris from a band called darling and drew of spoiler films fame. i met these two via fiona a long time ago, and i am constantly running into them at the most random times. never with fiona. what's up with that? btw, the next spoiler is april 18 at the knitting factory. go check it out. it's pretty funny shite. and if you like and make films, you can always participate.

whoa, i think i fixed this problem with my page

i took a few hours tonight to figure out why my page loads so effed up on safari. now it should be fixed... let me know if it isn't. jamie, you be the judge. let me know the dilly.

unrest

as you know, doug and i are heading to dc with some of his friends for the teenbeat shows at the black cat. doug is a huge unrest fan, and he submitted this song for an upcoming teenbeat tribute compilation: pursesnatchers - "imperial" (unrest cover). enjoy.

everything i learned from the past two nights but didn't have time until now to tell you

** i really like cheeseburger. both the meal and the band. they don't take themselves seriously and if you have a flask full of maker's mark, the night flies by like a giddy dream, and you're screaming like a silly idiot to new york's best party hardy rock'n'roll. and i still can't get the sight of joe's ass crack out of my head. christy and luke, i don't know how you put up with that.

** diamonds nights are good too. love the 'staches.

** i really like lansing-dreiden (or since they are not really l-d, l-d section i). i told daniel i would kick him if they were bad. after the show was over, i gave him too much adulation and a hug or two. it was so amazing to see this gothic new wave come to life. i can't wait to see them at sxsw!

** the occasion had some good songs too, but they made me remark at how many bands these days have at least one jesus figure. and if they don't have a jesus figure, they have a 'stache. this is even the case with dirty on purpose. joe, curses!

** also, new york is definitely small. kevbo sent me a link to this band, the end of the world. i really liked the lead singer's voice. we went to see lansing-dreiden last night at mercury lounge. and then he was like, "hey that's the singer over there." i thought to myself, "that guy looks very familiar." he was talking to daniel's friend carrie (sp?). as soon as i walked up to them, i realized why he looks familiar -- i have met him many times through daniel -- it was his friend stefan! SMALL WORLD, RIGHT?

** i have stopped caring about free red stripe.

** i have a newfound aversion to afterparties.

** also, i hate the new "no re-entry" rule at rothko. wtf is up with that?

** i actually spent more than two minutes in the dark(coke)room last night, and it wasn't so bad because if you have a table, you can gawk at people with some amusement (and you're sitting down, so your feet aren't tired).

** i have gotten two lap dances from guys this week. when did indie rock boys start giving lap dances in trendy east village/lower east side bars? i think it takes a lot of vodka in the champagne room. the best part? i didn't have to tip or reciprocate.

** stevie wonder = good times. no wonder the man receives awards every time the wind blows. he fucking deserves it for all the warm feelings he has put forth into the lives of many. maybe he invented global heart warming.

the night that would never ever fucking end

i hate long rock shows. with a passion. my favorite type of bill is the three-band bill. it's the perfect potion of rock right there -- you have the opening band that no one really knows about, but, hey, they could be cool, right? you have the middle band who everyone has seen probably once or twice. then you have the headliner, the band everyone is there to see, assumedly. sometimes i can even stomach 4 band bills, but that usually means i skip the first two bands if i don't know them.

but last night, i went to a 7 band bill show. i didn't really know i was going to end up seeing most of these bands. i purposely went to the show that todd p put together at llano estacado, his new space by the river in williamsburg. the space is simply amazing, and i really fell in love with it the minute i walked in. it's like walking into someone's dungeon. i didn't dare venture into the bathrooms.... which were on some kind of pedastal with black plastic curtains around the toilet. anna went in and i had to hold the curtains shut for her so that she could pee in peace. the stage was not that big, only room for the drums, really. and then there were the bands...

i got to the show around 11. i missed deerhunter and bloody panda. i don't really know what to say about child abuse, but the guy singing and playing that fucked up, souped up keyboard was pretty fun to watch. younger was a little bit of a more painful experience... but perhaps they just weren't my kind of music... they were less experimental or something than the other bands i ended up seeing on the bill, so maybe that affected my view of them. i don't know, but it was painful. at this point, everyone around me was drunk. i was sober. i met a friend of daniel's due to anna's friendliness and talent at introducing herself to people (love that). but i was tired and there was nowhere to sit. i need couches! or at least a stool or something, anything. narchitect had all sorts of technical problems, so it was hard to tell what their sound actually was... and then finally, i saw no things. the band i came to see, and they were great. but i was in such a sour mood by the time they went on (a little after 2 a.m. i think) that i don't think i was able to fully enjoy the experience. i did like them though, and i want to see them again, at a reasonable hour when i'm sufficiently sloshed. puttin' on the ritz played after no things... bj who is in the band is an interesting character as is his drummer. it was like he was tony clifton, speaking-singing these cover songs like "girl from ipanema" and "my funny valentine." but i was happy to leave at that point and make the cold trek home with my weary legs. boy, that was tough.

valentine's day

i think it's a little bit of a joke that valentine's day falls on the day before payday. as millions (millions? really?) of people scramble to buy their lil' special snuggly wuggly a gift to express their luvvy wuvvy ways, they are also thinking, damn, tomorrow is payday! at least, that's what i imagine they are thinking.

this year i have no valentine, but i'm not even sad about it. it's weird. i've been increasingly becoming fascinated with reading what i like to call "normal people's blogs." these are blogs that read like daily diary entries. and they don't really talk about when the next whatever album is coming out. two of these blogs that i have come to adore are written by former coworkers of mine who are amazing writers... maybe that's why it's so easy to read because i already know a little bit of their back story. and i know their voice. losing touch with these people was sad, but every now and then we'll send each other an email recounting fun IM convos -- those days when we used to gush over steve malkmus and shiba inus. le sigh.

so reading about "quirkyalones" in f's blog was pretty exhilarating. it was like some sort of sign or something. to quote her:

There's a new book called Quirkyalone that I would like to read. Here is a description (from Amazon):

quirkyalone (kwur.kee.uh.lohn) n. adj.
A person who enjoys being single (but is not opposed to being in a relationship) and generally prefers to be alone rather than date for the sake of being in a couple. With unique traits and an optimistic spirit; a sensibility that transcends relationship status. Also adj. Of, relating to, or embodying quirkyalones.
See also: romantic, idealist, independent.

so... am i quirkyalone? probably not exactly. but perhaps that's where i am heading towards. maybe i will be like f. she's highly successful in my eyes in all respects. and i believe one day she will find her perfect match (though it's probably not going to be steve malkmus).

yesterday i did get a valentine in the mail tho, and i had to admit it made me smile. it was from elizabeth, bergory's ex, and she had wrapped this amazingly haunting and beautiful picture around the envelope. inside were two valentines -- one that she had made herself and one that was like the kind you give in elementary school to your classmates -- i think the character was barbie. the girl is just too sweet and thoughtful. i love that i received this valentine snail mail, and it was given with the intention of cheering me up. that my dears is a touching salute to friendship. some valentines are given with action (thanks anna and stephie) and some are given with creativity and snail mail.

with my limited funds, i have decided to keep things on the DL. last night i was at work until quarter to 10. i was soooo exhausted after a week of coming in early and staying late, that i called up doug and decided to hang out for a little bit at his place and watch curb your enthusiasm. this is one of those shows that is so frustrating to watch, but entirely funny at the same time. it's like seinfeld with twice the screaming and 10 times the awkward moments. hilarious!

tonight those of you with money in your pockets should stop by the loose record after party for sam champion, one of my favorite local bands. huzzah! get the details from jay's site. i wanted to go to the party but i am going to see no things at todd p's new space down by the water in ol' brooklyn, partly for work, partly for pleasure. partly because i will feel no pressure to spend any money because i am completely broke! that's new york livin', peeps. always wondering where the next penny will or will not be spent.

also if you're on the LES, i guess you should know about this too:
au revoir simone @ the delancey. not sure what time they go on, but they are playing tonight and you should support them.

there's also a misfits cover band playing at arlene's grocery in honor of kevbo's birthday. he's turning 25, and he thinks that's getting old. puhlease! go wish him a happy one, if you know him. i think i am the only one who calls him kevbo, but if you know, you know, you know?

thinking of you, there's lightning bolts in my chest.... cute shite for your valentine

not only do i have a fondness for catbird, i have an immense amount of love for bb&ppinc. i bought a valentine's day card they created at catbird, and i cannot stop staring at it because it makes me so happy. the card is pictured above. but the best parts are inside, where all of the characters are passed out on the floor after eating all the chocolates they collected from the heart-shaped clouds. and then on the back, the panda-like character is hugging a horse that is pooping out pink hearts. but then i saw these cupcakes shirts and fell in love. someone buy me one? or two?

sidenote: i'm listening to akron/family and it is amazing stuff. thanks to billy j for giving it to me. i can't stop listening to "i'll be on the water." you can download the song on their myspace page and give it to your valentine.

nyc, and the livin' ain't easy

oh these days have become so overwhelming. i feel like i am at constant tug of war with my emotions and my mental state. every time i think i have things under control in my life, things are thrown up in the air and i am back to juggling the chaotic shit in my life. i'm looking for stability, peeps. i'm looking for love in all the wrong places. i'm hoping for some order. but i don't seem to have any time to look for these things successfully. i was talking to garrett today and we are both people who are stressed out. but we concurred that it all comes with living and working in new york. you live here, you stress here. that's the gentlemen's agreement. there's never enough money (unless you have a trust fund). never enough time (this seems to be the case even if you don't have a job). never enough joy (because we know everyone in the city is depressed to some degree, and always hungry for more). so what does one do? what DOES one do?

i think one way to relieve stress is to watch the silly folks on family feud. dj told me that for one question: name something you hide and always have trouble finding. number one answer? money (of course). other answer that doesn't seem to make any sense? teeth. yep, teeth. that's comedy. pure comedy. i think they had to have made that one up.

hide and seek

conrad, anna and i went to see hide and seek last night -- the new m. night shyamylan's movie. this was after fon-lin fucking got electrocuted during knife skills practice. i heard her screaming, and i thought she was fucking around. i ran over to the door and there she was on the ground, her eyes close and puffy looking. i was scared shitless. as we gathered our wits, we waited for fon-lin to be picked up and taken home.

still in a daze, we left anna's place and headed toward the movie theater. what the fuck just happened? i can't believe she got electrocuted. jesus christ!!!

so perfectly and naturally it seems -- we went to a horror flick. we met up with conrad, one of the many adorably underage kids in fxxxing lion and the fugue.

anyhoo, this movie has dakota fanning in it -- more like dakota freaky fawning. she is so creepy in this movie. and so very underage. ick. but you know who isn't underage in this movie? elizabeth shue. her boobs were so big that i thought they were actually a prop or a character of their own. it was amazing and distracting. the three of us couldn't stop gawking every time they entered the screen. i was gasping and giggling at the same time. this movie was like a dark comedy. a really bad dark comedy. tsk tsk. but we all had a pretty good laugh, didn't we? yes, yes we did.
