i miss the comfort in being sad

tonight i am going to see a couple shows. go figure, right?

as i'm getting rid of this annoying head cold, i have also been a busy bee. no rest for the weary, eh. but anyhoo, tonight i am going to check out dave's pride and joy, the giraffes. they are playing for industry folk at sin-e tonight at 8 p.m. this time, i wonder if they will pull me into their van and force choice whiskey down my throat like they did last time. we'll see!

i am also going to mercury lounge to check out mar (a band that has had bjork, mum and the album leaf helping them record in iceland -- not too shabby!). i have no idea what they sound like, but i'm hoping they will be good. then i'm gonna see the bloodthirsty lovers and the album leaf. i've seen the lovers a bunch of times, but this will be my first album leaf experience. anyone know the dilly on them? also, we're gonna be celebrating dtl's birthday a little early, so come out and dance (yes, dance!) with us.

i forgot to mention before that you should also go see say hi to your mom (hi eric!) and aqueduct at north six tonight. give eric a big hug for me. and you.

last night, dtl was gracious enough to take me to the big sleep, crystal skulls and black mountain show. boy was i in for some surprises.

i love the big sleep. these kids know how to pulsate their powerful rhythms to the audience. the music is absolutely hypnotic and mysteriously dark, and the band just keeps getting better and better every time.

crystal skulls really surprised me. dtl tells me they are touring with the wedding present, and after seeing their show, i can see why. they are fantastic, with a sound so full and overwhelming. sometimes they could border on cheesey (especially that keyboardist who was REALLY FEELIN' IT, if you know what i mean).

black mountain was ok. they didn't thrill me as much as crystal skulls, but had that sort of dark quirky hippie jam band feel to them. there was one girl in the crowd who was wiggling her ass to the music like it was a Monster Booty party. that was awesome.

ps. thanks to kevbo for the rad razor and tie care package. i got lots of goodies, including monster booty, non stop hip hop, goin' south, tha down low, booty time, monster ballads, monsters of rock and monsters of rap. i'm so excited!!

i can!
the can song i added to my jukebox today makes me deliriously happy. enjoy "turtles have short legs." it reminds me of the days during college when stephie and i would put on one of her many mixtapes. the one i loved started with this can song.

some cute new bands i have befriended on myspace

yes i am an internerd. what else is new? these are some bands i have recently befriended on myspace and the songs that wooed me...

kawaii - "talk sleep or fuck" -- it's like a candy-coated "fuck and run" liz phair, except with pretty girl-boy vocals and lots of synth. they are from norway. i hope they make it to the US some time soon because we all know i'm not leaving the country for a while.

colored shadows - "eyes" -- i'm usually not into LA bands too much, but there is something intriguing and dark about colored shadows. i think it's because they sort of remind me of a more mainstream version of other passengers. i guess that means they are not as intense as OP, but they are still enjoyable. yo, come to new york.

tally ho - "greener" -- i always fall for indie rock boys in ties. it never fails. (sidenote: i think that's what i liked about kaiser chiefs. the other night when i saw them at bowery, i thought the lead singer looked like a mix of simon lebon, rod stewart and james spader. whoa!) anyways, there is something quite charming about tally ho's music, but i'm not sure if it's entering into some cheesy/silly territory where the music becomes compromised by the humor inflected.

autumn thieves - "rachel's underground" -- i'm not really sure why i sort of dig this band. i think it's because the singer sounds so sad. i'm not really confident it will translate to a good live show, but you never know till you try, i suppose.

photos from my sidekick

wednesday, march 16

the view from my hotel window.

when i got to austin, jonathan was a gracious host. he made me a sandwich. he got me a beer. he inflated a mattress and made a comfy bed. we got vaporized. it was awesome.

what was not awesome was only getting 4 hours of sleep. i woke up the next day, and it was raining. not cool! i somehow called a cab to pick me up because jonathan and james, his roommate, were both asleep. i went to my hotel to check in, and took a hot shower. i figured i deserved one, even if i didn't really have time to take one.

then of course, my work day started. i won't bore you with the details, but i was schlepping!

some other stories that i won't put a date on

kevin bybee from the arm (sort of formerly on!air!library! stopped by the ascap/filter party to see jason falkner. falkner was aiite. not stupendous. probably because, as he admitted himself, he was terribly hung over and had only woken up a little before the show. real profesh.

erika eating at john mueller's bbq

as we were waiting for doug to get to the green potatoes gig (he was waiting for the van to be picked up and towed to a repair shop), we enjoyed the famous bbq. i had brisket or something. and no, i don't really want to know what brisket is. thanks.

shara and joe at john mueller's bbq.

one of the best things about waking up to joe in the morning, is that first cup of joe. it's funny and wakes you up with a laugh, a wink and a smile. you figured he had to be happy, sleeping with three girls in the room.

dtl, bless, his heart, helped me with my work one day, dragging four heavy boxes of magazines to the trade show. just call him muscles traci, yo!

kevbo, yes, with a flower in his hair.

daniel before he consumed massive amounts of tex mex at iron cactus

doug and annie being all cute. awwww.

anna conducting business. uh huh that girl rules.

if we were real rock stars, we'd be seriously hung over in this photo. instead, we are just shielding our eyes from the sun like vampires.

stop, in the name of sxsw!

sound team (from austin) were great. jennifer k says they are like a poppier walkmen. hey, that sounds appealing and all, but my heart stays with the walkmen. can't wait to see them on monday.

i was watching the crowd watch kaiser chiefs at the ascap/filter party. it must feel so good to have so many people into your music. i must say, it was magical to witness. my heart beat faster as i imagined being on the stage, in total rock bliss. that's why these kids do it!

stuck in chicago for 8 hours. yep, that totally sucked.

on my way to austin, i had a connecting flight in chicago. let me tell you kids never to fly through chicago if you can help it. there is always something awry, though i love the city itself (shout to to the empty bottle, schubas, the changes, mike d., chris b).

it took us a while to take off because of "weight-balance" issues. they got rid of two passengers, luring them off the plane with free roundtrip tickets. in retrospect, i should have taken those offers...

but i didn't. i had some work event to attend that evening, so i stayed in my seat. we finally got off the ground, but 20 minutes later, the captain announced we were returning to chicago because some part in the airplane stopped working. fuck.

don't worry, they say. we have a plane waiting for you to board. everything will be ok.

then 30 minutes later, they tell us our flight has been canceled. while there is a replacement plane, there is no longer a crew to fly it. the next available flight to austin is in five days, we can sit standby if we want. fuck!

i start to freak out and call everyone i know. my job. my co-worker (who's already in austin). doug who has friends in austin. my travel agent who booked the flight. what the fuck do i do now?

i ended up booking a flight to san antonio, which is about an hour away from austin. doug's friend jonathan agreed to pick me up and take me back to austin. while i was waiting for my flight, i chatted with other passengers who were in the same position. it was insane. most of them were from abroad -- the uk, sweden, norway. they had been traveling for way longer than i had. i felt really bad for them.

we arrived in san antonio at 12:30 at night. jonathan picked me up. i thought we were going to sleep at his parents' house (they live in san antonio), but he ended up driving me straight to austin. we arrived at about 2 a.m. his apartment complex looked like melrose place. it even had a pool. i thought, this is definitely texas! a pool in an apartment complex? that never happens in new york. anyways, i crashed at his place, but didn't fall asleep until 4 a.m.

whisper down the lane

** audrey spins tonight at ghv's any suggestions? party @ the maritime hotel - hiro

** tomorrow there is that free flaming lips show. free alcohol too. why? to launch the new mazda convertible, of course...

** on friday, the deli magazine throws a launch party at sin-e for its second issue. i believe jay, audrey and my so-called blogger column will be in this one. that's kinda exciting. come out and say hello. it's also the issue with the dirty on purpose interview with the amazing joe jurewicz. oh yeah and 2-for-1 red stripe beer special until 10.

** also on friday, a band i've never seen is having a release party at sway. they are called the oggs. kevbo sent me their myspace link a long time ago, and now my curiosity has been piqued. check out their music. i hear they are "champion drinkers," so if you don't like their music, at least you can drink with them. they won't be performing, they'll just be spinning their cd.

ps. laura, i welcome you to hack away. the photos are hilarious.

what will define our generation?

i am not naturally a morning person, but like many other grumpy commuters, i have a particular routine that helps me get ready for the work day. i like to put on my headphones, listen to whatever it is i am fancying at the time, and read. i zone out the rest of the shoulders and backpacks and louis vuitton purses or whatever happens to be bumping into my person. i am in a world of my own creation, and it makes me content.

last night i got halfway through reading the final pages of joyce maynard's memoir, at home in the world. the last pages are filled with the article she wrote for the new york times magazine called "an eighteen year old looks back on life." she speaks as a voice of her generation. edit, the voice of her generation. she speaks of how her generation is defined not by what they have or have created, but what they have missed out on or failed to create. they were a generation lost in limbo, waiting for the next significant movement.

it made me think hard about what would eventually define my generation -- how we will see ourselves in retrospect as definitive marks in our history. i don't have an answer yet to this question.

this morning on the train, true to my routine, i took out the fresh copy of legs mcneil and gillian mccain's please kill me, a book about the history of punk rock. it begins with the velvet underground, and it is told with the voices of lou reed, nico, john cale, sterling morrison, al aronowitz, la monte young, paul morrissey, et al... i found myself engrossed in their words. their perception of their generation, their era.

one particular passage caught my attention, and i think it sums up a little bit about how their era was marked by romance and fantasy:

danny fields: everybody was in love with everybody. we were all kids, and it was like high school. i mean it was like when i was sixteen, this one likes this one this week, and this one doesn't like this one this week, but likes this one, and there are all these triangles, i mean it wasn't terribly serious. it just happened to be people who later on became very famous because they were so sexy and beautiful, but we didn't realize it at the time, we just all were falling in and out of love -- who could even fucking keep track?

everybody was in and out of love with andy (warhol), of course, and andy was in and out of love with everybody. but people that were most "in-loved with" were the people, i think who fucked the least -- like andy. i mean the people who you really know went to bed with andy, you could count on the fingers of one hand. the people who really went to bed with edie (sedgwick) or lou (reed) or nico were very, very few. there really wasn't that much sex, there were more crushes than sex. sex was so messy. it still is.

as i was walking out of the subway and on my way to work, i wondered what our generation would remember most about our times. then i realized, i spent my entire commute without my headphones on. i realized, this book was music. i can't wait to read more.

tomorrow, i head to austin for sxsw. i am both nervous and excited about what will happen. most of brooklyn will be in austin, like some kind of sick and twisted hipster spring break. i just cannot wrap my head around what to expect. it is all up in the air, up to us.

added to the jukebox above: velvet underground, diplo, the zombies, ella fitzgerald, collete carter and guided by voices. enjoy.

knife skills, turing machine, pit er pat, menomena @ north six tonight

then i'm heading to see the lot six and darling at trash. then to see cheeseburger and diamond nights for the deli magazine party at asterick art space. the underground is back in brooklyn. i think i'll dig a little deeper.

photos from last night on their way... but let me say that the barcelona pavillion were uber cute. fxxxing lion glowed... and joe almost got naked again. almost. the cowboy bouncer wrestler stopped him. and les georges leningrad were also cute.

here are the details on tonight's greenpoint extravaganza:
les georges leningrad, fxxxing lion, the barcelona pavillion

and she was

march has been absolutely fucking mad. i guess that's why they call it march madness. last year around this time i was an absolute mess. this year, things are a little smoother, but i really can't believe a whole year has gone by already. sometimes march 2004 feels just like yesterday.

but you know what? it's not. since then, there have been leaps and bounds made that i just could not have predicted. last year, this time, i was planning a cd release party for the dirty on purpose ep, sleep late for a better tomorrow. this year, i'll be planning another cd release -- the re-release of their ep with wider distribution on north street records (something you may have read from jay's blog). that means fans in cali, portland, st. louis, etc will now be able to pick up the cd in their own indie record store. how sweet is that?

personally, this time last year i was also a bigger wreck. i'm slowly starting to piece together my life again, discovering more and more about myself along the way. it's been quite a journey. i am able to smile and laugh again, like i used to. anna once told me that she missed the giggly carefree girl of yesteryear. so do i. i'm trying to bring a part of her back, and still move forward. i think i've been somewhat successful.

though i haven't been able to go to as many shows as i used to, i have been making efforts to be out and about. i finally went to see the futureheads at the bowery ballroom (though unfortunately i missed the shout out louds). the whole crew was at the ballroom, and i got really drunk. i remember admiring the crazy vocal exercises the futureheads put on, but after a while, the songs started to blur together. was it the alcohol or do all the songs just sound alike? whether they sounded alike or not, they were catchy and good. but it just felt like one really long song. at their best, they sound like the jam. and i like the jam.

the afterparty was at happy endings, which kevbo told me used to be one of those massage parlors. is that really true? i can be really gullible sometimes. we wandered around the place and ran into isaac and lio. the dancefloor was like 1984, smoke machines and everything. it was pretty awesome.

knife skills hit the delancey the next day. it was their second time there, first time with drummer joel. there were TONS of people there at the death disco party. it was hot. i saw all these people who showed up, and it was an amazing feeling. a community and a slew of new peoples. sweetness!! they unveiled their slightly different sound. it sounds slightly death metal. a lot faster. a lot tougher. lots of growling and pounding. knife skills aren't dainty meek asian girls. they are swift and biting. watch out.

then i left new york city. yes sometimes i get tired of being in the city and yearn for something more. my best friend steph lives in dc. we've known each other since college, and she's been with me through some of my toughest times. always a sage. anyways, i went down there with doug to see the unrest reunion show at the black cat. it was so much fun. we also hit a cool record store called revolution records. it had small rooms in the back with record players and stereos and magazines (like maxim and the fader and punk planet) so that you could just sit, listen to music and read. it was actually really cool. their selection wasn't that great, but the little things count too.

the next day steph's bf jamie took me to smash records, which was more punk rock. i bought a slew of cassette tapes there including sebadoh (smash your head on the punk rock), ride (smile), sonic youth (made in the usa), buddy holly (the buddy holly collection) and the cure (disintegration). it took me back to those days. remember cassettes and mixtapes?

we went dancing at some club on 18th street that had an 80s dance party. at first it was fun. the room was big and dark, and the dj was playing decent music. but steadily we discovered the dj sucked. a lot. cds were skipping. no smooth transitions. sometimes songs would stop mid-song altogether. and sometimes he would slip in some techno remix. NOOOOOOO!

steph, jamie and i headed back to her place and played Kings until I couldn't function anymore. i got one hour of sleep before doug picked me up to head back to nyc. i passed out in the van. i spent the rest of the day in a comatose state.

then at some point i went to that tsunami benefit at crash mansion with the fever, the natural history, blue sparks and clap your hands say yeah. again, i missed clap your hands (goddamnit!) and caught the blue sparks. it's so weird seeing them without the tall blonde girl. they were good, but the venue's sound was flat and didn't bring out their best side. i kept thinking crash mansion was BIZARRO MERCURY LOUNGE. it sort of looked like mercury lounge except the ceilings were half as tall, and the bar area was huge rather than extremely narrow.

i haven't seen the natty hizzo in a while, and it was nice to see they added to their lineup and julian is doing some singing. they always have good energy, but again i thought the venue's sound system really sucked. the fever also fell victim to this. but some songs overcame the sucky sound system like "bridge and tunnel," "put it on you," "gray ghost" and "ladyfingers."

isaac came over and said hello and told me about the afterparty at happy ending. i passed on the party. i felt like i had been there and done that place. and frankly, i was tired! yep yep.

i'll tell you about my short tour experience this weekend and the shows i'm going to tonight and tomorrow night in a later post. i got to jet to work!

Rescheduled: DoP on WOXY.com on March 10 @ 11 EST

Due to van troubles, the band has rescheduled their Woxy.com performance. Thanks for understanding and tune in tomorrow!

i'm back, and i miss the band

it was a sad farewell, as i exited my stint on the dirty on purpose tour. after dc and philly (and yes, i finally got my driver's license renewed! but whatta pain in the ass that was.), i felt like i was sending my kids off to college. according to their tour diary, they had some van trouble after i left...

so hopefully they will make it to cinncinnati today in time for their WOXY.com live in-studio broadcast. tune in around 4 p.m. to hear the goodness! then tonight they are playing with one of our nyc faves, asobi seksu at southgate house in newport, ky, which i hear is just a mere 10 minutes from cincy.

also, if you want to laugh this morning, read this very entertaining interview dop's joe jurewicz did with the deli magazine's tom o'connell (a new local mag that audrey, jay and i also write for). joe is one funny ass dude! i miss laughing at his 'stache already. awwww.

now i have to get back to reality. goodness gracious, someone poke a hole in my eye. and if you don't see me online a lot, it's because t-mobile is globally retarded. my sidekick has ceased to become useful. i want my money back!

ps. happy belated birthday to christy. thanks for being a pal.
