pitchfork talks dirty!
check out this lil' news piece on pitchfork on dirty on purpose...

filter also gets dirty
i forgot to mention that filter has dirty on purpose as a filter pick of the week.

in other news
i have had quite a crazy weekend. i feel like there's so much to report, but where to start? after practice on thursday, me and a bunch of the dop crew zoomed over to red and black in williamsburg, where cheeseburger played to a packed house for their ep release, the gang's all here. it was also nice to sit in the patio on the side... which i had never noticed before. weird!? how long have i been living here, and what's my fucking problem? ha.

the next day i did more summertime activities... the kind of activities that make you feel like you're in 6th grade. somewhat innocent and mischievous. midnight bike ride with the breeze electrifying your hair. trying to sneak into an abandoned old public pool and cutting my leg (not deep). staying up all night talking. that kind of thing.

then on saturday, i went to the loft party at fon lin's house. it was really awesome, and felt like a nice community of people enjoying each other's company and music. just really nice. the plants (members of !!! and measles, mumps, rubella) played a great set. their music was unlike the dancey punk of !!!, but it was still pretty solid. more bluesy and still lots of fun. then knife skills went up and really blew everyone away with a badass performance. i was blown away. i think it was the funnest best show yet, and i really see so much growth in them as a band. then mazing vids wowed the crowd with their experimental dance punk. i really enjoyed the new song they played at the end. i want a recording of that, ryan sov! are you reading this? i want to put it on a mixtape. cheeseburger got all set up on the roof to rock the fuck out but tenants came up and yelled at all of us. they were pissed off because someone peed off the roof. the moral to this story is that if you want to rock out on the roof, don't let your guest pee off of the roof. such savages!

sunday morning there was a rainbow on my ceiling so i thought it might be a lucky day. i watched this movie called, dream for an insomniac. it was a cheesey romance with ione skye (remember her?). cheesey, but i am cheesey so of course i sort of liked it.

i packed up and went to new haven for the dirty on purpose show with the winter set -- a band they played with in kentucky (also with asobi seksu). we played at this place called "BAR". it was pretty awesome. the acoustics were the kind you find in churches. we were given the choice of three HUGE pizzas, in which we could put anything we wanted on it. we only ordered two, but they were delicious. then we pretty much had unlimited pitchers of beer. the bar brewed their own, and i kind of fell in love with their watermelon ale. why don't places like this exist in new york? maybe they do, and i just have no idea where they are.

the winter set really blew me away in a lot of ways. they also do a harmony of voices, and i was impressed by the sudden dynamics in their music. sometimes wistful, sometimes psycho-delic. it was awesome. they're also the nicest bunch of kids. totally sweet. check them out.

ps. i totally forgot to say that there was a couple dancing at the show last night -- the woman was literally leaping in the air. it was amazing. it made the whole energy of the show fun. we think they were the people on shrooms (we know there were people there on shrooms -- they came up to the winter set folks and said, "we heard you were psychedlic so we're going to take shrooms.") awesome!

on the drive home, joe was cracking us up with his ron burgundy impressions. not just quoting lines from the movie, but making up lines that probably could have been in the movie. some of them were real winners, and made the late ride home so much easier!

i wrote a little preview of the saints and lovers show tonight at pianos for loose record. read it. and most importantly, go to the show. unfortunately i won't be able to go because i am chainlocked to my cubicle writing awards show scripts. ahhh!! somebody help me! i can't wait until my vacation in july, sigh.

oh yes, then go to this afterparty with audrey...

Tuesday, June 21, 2005

i love you, i really do
first off, thanks to everyone who came to mercury lounge on saturday. dirty on purpose sold out the place with a line down the block. and yes the afterparty was a total shitshow thanks to the folks at loose record, north street and dj del. lots of free beer, good music and dancing. what more could i ask for? also thanks to all the bands who played: bishop allen, the end of the world, and chloroform. you were all up to par and it truly felt like an OTM night -- just like back in the day when i used to throw monthly parties at luxx (rip). i heart you all. hugs and kisses! also thanks to daniel, beach and jomo. you rule.

clap your hands say yeah
last night i went to see clap your hands say yeah with jenna last night at movable hype ala knitting factory. i manuevered my way to the front and was dancing along to the fun songs. one thing kinda bummed me out though... i wish the band would smile more... or laugh... or something. they looked serious, and at times the lead singer looked so goddamn condescending. he kept rolling his eyes and had this look of disdain. i stopped dancing and clapping my hands... until robbie (correx) the keyboardist and tambourine man started jumping up and down and smiling and clapping all happy-like. that is what i needed! i was happy. i really admire the lead singer's voice on some songs -- the songs that were more fun and talking headsish. but on beautiful, gorgeous and lush numbers, it just didn't fit. at least in the live show -- on the recordings it is more blended and subdued but during the live show it was jagged and harsh. i'm looking forward to seeing them again though at southpaw on july 20 at the vicious anniversary show.

then jenna and i jaunted over to around the clock for frozen drinks and diner food. i had a pizza burger, which is practically a cheeseburger... speaking of cheeseburger, my friend christy's band is playing a record release this thursday, june 23, at red and black in williamsburg. it's going to be a shitshow. then they are playing a loft party on saturday. here are all the details to get your party on:

New York magazine chimes in...
New York's finest: Dirty on Purpose. This Brooklyn fivesome spins out distorted indie pop with lyrics that don't take themselves too seriously. The cleverly named local favorites play fuzzy, distorted, epic live shows.

Time Out reiterates...
Local five-piece Dirty on Purpose plays loud, grindingly melodic rock that betrays sweet, atmospheric tunes.

Labels:

love from bostonist and gothamist
who says new york and boston don't show mutual love? that's what i'm talking about!

From The Boston Globe
Dirty On Purpose has the best recent album title, ''Sleep Late for a Better Tomorrow," and they are, indeed, a dreamboat of a band. Their songs are slow-to-mid tempo, with subtle washes of fuzz guitar and a hint of menace. Reference point: Yo La Tengo.

Labels:

From This Week's Village Voice
This Brooklyn quintet likes the rock -- the kind that New Yorkers like Sonic Youth used to make. Tonight's show is the release party for their debut EP Sleep Late For a Better Tomorrow which sees the band very polished and lending themselves well in the studio. Hopfully they'll keep up their exploratory tendencies as they get ready for bigger things.

From Today's Metro NY
Amassing more fans than a white shirt attracts ring-around-the-collar, Dirty on Purpose's unique blend of dreamy pop and heavy instrumentalism is earning the group a diverse audience across the New York rock scene.

The five-piece band (one chick and four dudes) have been together since 2002, and they have finally put their moody music on wax with their five-song debut, "Sleep Late For a Better Tomorrow."

The EP requires a keen listener, as it teeters from one end of the musical spectrum to another without a real bridge. Erika Forster's shadowy voice and Doug Marvin's soft singing leads the band's seamless blend of frenetic drums and tempestuous bass, which is worthy of a Jesus and Mary Chain reunion.

"Sleep Late For a Better Tomorrow" is so artfully produced that it isn't a fair teaser for their sonic and distortion-laden concerts. When performing live, they're more spin cycle than soak: the melodies whirl, the guitars churn, and the music swathes the crowd. The five-piece group plays hard and loud, but they work well together, making Dirty on Purpose one show worth dressing up for.

the update, in a nutshell
the knife skills show at cake shop went really well. thanks to all who came out to support... did you bump into mike myers too? he looks unreal in real life. i think my jaw was open the entire time, like, whoa is that really mike myers? behave! while i was at cake shop, i got completely obliterated, and i just want to apologize to everyone who noticed. yikes! plus i want to say thank you to daniel for letting me have a bite of his cupcake. sugary goodness.

this weekend came up with a lot of unexpected events. i had an unexpected house visitor from los angeles staying at my apartment so i played host all weekend. i'm not sure if i'm a very good host, but at least i can say i am nice. more than nice. perhaps the right term is infinitely nice and tolerant. it was amusing in some ways, and annoying in other ways, but all the same, it is over now. time for the work week... which is going to suck a lot. i have so much to do!

i went to the mighty robot (now narchitect castle) show on friday night. got there kind of late, as big a little a were going on. there were plenty of people chilling out there... it got so loud, i can't believe the cops didn't show up. i just kept having flashbacks to the last time i was there -- fitz's going away party with panthers, enon, jah division, etc. the cops came and shut it down but then enon ended up going on a little later just to play three songs.

then on saturday i went to a bbq at the autumn skate bowl in greenpoint. dirty on purpose played an impromptu set there for this guy's birthday party. i had never been to the bowl before, but i really liked the space. the band set up in a corner as skaters were riding all over and doing their gravity-defying tricks. at one point the lights went off, and the band kept playing... it was really nice. and then there was a point where this skater was jumping through hoolahoops. fun times!

sunday i went to au revoir simone at the sup magazine bbq at union pool. damn, there were tons of people there. cameron introduced me to his mom. i saw the always affable jay there, which made me smile for the first time that day. the space was hot and sweaty, but the girls toughed it out. i quit the party after their set and rolled on home to try and gear up for this crazy week.

after most of you get turned away at the diesel-u-music event tonight, please come join me at the knife skills show @ cake shop tonight. knife skills hits at 10 p.m. it's $6.

dear mia

i am a fan (not the crazed one dancing all kooky in the plaid western shirt last night at sobs, but a fan nonetheless). i love the mixtape. arular is pretty good too but not as good as the mixtape. your dj last night messed up a couple times, didn't he? i saw you give him the look. the look that says, "thanks for messing up my song, punk!" i think even though you broke up with diplo, you should still be partners in music crimes. it's magic. it really is. it goes beyond romance. just think about it... especially for your central park gig.

the thing is, i think you have the potential to blow it outta the water, but you're holding back. sure, your dance moves are cool, but the performance was flat. the music was nothing more than a replay of the record, and therefore... boring with no boom boom. and i didn't like dj marlboro, though i hear he is a big deal in brazil... anyhoo, i say this out of love, because if i didn't care, i would tell you that you're amazing and awesome and all of that gushy stuff. but i'm just trying to be honest. make it hot.

jukebox feed
i just added out hud, m.i.a., the cure, the cars, and clap your hands say yeah to the jukebox. dance like the floor is burning your sensitive toes.

manhattan mournings
this morning i started reading a million pieces by james frey. the book is graphic yet sort of apathetic in a dissociated way. i'm floating... it's not out of elation though. my skin is numb and... distant like the narration in the novel. i vaguely feel the heat but i'm not sweating, just warm. a guy walking past me in a business suit is wiping his forehead with a handkerchief. the woman in front of me has a dark black mustache. i'm not even kidding. so surreal!

all i wanna do is...
last night the only thing i was planning on doing was running and then watching my new netflix selection, cinemania. it was going to be one of those chill evenings when i'm not doing anything... just maxed and relaxed.

but in a series of cosmic events, my evening was turned around to the exact opposite. i went with my boss and my co-worker to the cutting room for a songwriters hall of fame event after work... just killing some time. then i headed downtown to the two boots pioneer theater to see george's boss' documentary, invisible. it was the last night the film was playing so i thought i'd check it out. it's a documentary following the lives of a few heroin addicts in bulgaria. besides the creepy crawling feeling you get when watching someone shoot up on screen FOR REAL, there is also a scene where someone is OD'ing. and the cameraman just films him OD'ing (he didn't die). it was insane.

then i had to rush off to catch the last half of stephen malkmus at irving plaza. i missed most of the hits, but i ran into a bunch of friends at the show, including my old boss fiona and her friend nancy. i love seeing them at random places like that. but of course bumping into fiona at an SM concert is not random. we are both huge pavement fans. that is one of the things that bonded us in the first place. daniel kept meowing the psychedlic hippie guitar lines into my ear, which caused me to uncontrollably laugh throughout the show. daylen and noah were bopping along. i felt like i should be on acid, hopping up and down with my hands in the air. SM has gotten very classic rock... but he still looks damn cute.

summer babe
this weekend i had my first iced coffee of the summer with douglas marvin in greenpoint. it was quite tasty. then we watched the flaming lips documentary, fearless freaks. i also got my first sunburn. today i am completely drained. last night i slept with the a/c on. i woke up in a fog. still in said fog.

thanks to everyone who helped with the music video shoot yesterday. i had never been to east river ampitheater before, and discovered it is a beautiful spot in manhattan. the river was astonishing and calming. the people were patient and amazing. thanks to all the friends who stopped by to support even though they were hungover. i felt like i was taking part in a community art project -- it was so much fun!

knife skills are back and playing cake shop this thursday on june 9th with the good good and more teeth. the show is 6 bucks. come out and experience their new crazy sound. a lil bit country, a lil bit rock and roll, a lil bit indie rock, a lil bit death metal. no one else sounds like this right now.

made in sheffield
last night i was lucky enough to go with jay to the party for this documentary called made in sheffield. we ran into the gothamist/coolfer duo of jen and glenn. it was sort of a shock for me to run into people i know as i have been heavily on the DL, but it was nice. keep 'em coming, peeps.

i didn't even know there was a scene in sheffield, nevermind that it was made up of top of the pops bands like the human league and abc. of course, what i really didn't know is how these bands really started -- as experimental noise bands, mostly because no one knew how to play any of their instruments (more like the strange energy of cabaret voltaire). this was a truly democratic community of musicians that was exploding in sheffield, amidst more popular and accessible acts like the extras, who were more influenced by straight-up blues and R&B than twiddling knobs to make squeaks and squiggles. the experimental gave way to more commercial music as the music evolved from intangible noise to solid new wave. also i enjoyed the jarvis cocker commentary. pulp forever!

anyways, i really liked the space where the party was -- this store in soho called groupe 16sur20, which was located right across the street of our fine dining experience at cafe colonial around houston and elizabeth. while the store does have a strange name, it was great space, in fact, perfect place for a party. see the photo above to see what it looked like (add industry hipsters and empty bottles of red stripe -- thanks jay and hawkins).

i have no idea what that 007 car is doing there... but someone at the party said they wanted to have sex on it... so i guess it's a pretty sexy car. i like the white vents. hmmmm.... check it out this weekend if you're in the nabe.

i have no will power.
i am terribly weak. i just had a piece of chocolate cake and i am wired!!!

online resurrection?
lately, i've sort of been thinking about re-entering the myspace and friendster world. why? since my little online suicide, i suddenly feel disconnected from everyone. is this heaven or hell? not sure. it's quite sad that some people only communicate through these avenues. but hey, it's convenient as all get out, right? i still feel like holding out a little bit, but feel conflicted. but resisting the urge is such a challenge.

happy birthday, stephie
thanks for being the bestest.

female noisemakers, where are you?
so every once in a while a topic comes up that gets me thinking and thinking and thinking. recently one of my friends pointed out this time out new york article on new york city noisemakers. that's a great idea for an article, right? but then it was pointed out that all of the noisemakers featured were men. this isn't surprising to me as the music industry is centered around men. i mean, the whole world is centered around men.

specifically, the article is about noisemakers. so i started wondering if there were women in new york who flout traditional mainstream indie rock for bands they truly believe in. the small upstarts. the exceptionally indie. the music that probably does not fit in with the popular british invasion music, and in fact spits in its eye. music that rebels against definition and strives to start something original. and honestly, it was hard to think of one because most people in new york city are naturally followers. they care about being part of the popular crowd. they care about trends and being trendy... and going global.

so i challenge you. can you think of any?
