the last story in nine stories is called "teddy." this was indeed my favorite story. it's about a young boy who believes he is a reincarnated meditative spirit reborn. he questions the idea of knowledge as a positive. in essence, he says, what if we cleared our minds of everything we were ever taught and started thinking about things from a blank slate perspective? what if we didn't attach the color green to grass, but grass was just something it was -- something that is just shown to us and experienced? what if we didn't tell people elephants had trunks, but just showed people an elephant instead, without any references? is this the purest experience? when this theory is applied to music, it becomes an interesting discussion. do we experience music purely when we are full of knowledge or when we know absolutely nothing? there are so many people out there that find glory in the fact that they know every little detail about a certain type of music -- they know the history, they know all the albums, the lyrics, the story behind the lyrics, the kind of amps and guitars a band uses, etc, etc. but perhaps the purest way to experience music is just to simply listen to it, without all of that noise in our head. just a thought.
Sebadoh - "Skull"There is history in this place There are dragons to be chased And though I don't know who you are An easy flow and a strong, a strong heart And the charm in the way you hide Gently take my skull for a ride And I don't know who you are But I know what I would like you to beA one-night stand under stoned persuasion But a joy that I can't hide Gently take my skull for a ride We can never ever go too far The pain we can't escape at least will wait So let's go quickly, no we go slow Let's go chasing dragons through the snow Kindly take my all And give me all you have Gently take my skull for a ride Take and shake your soul But never lose control Gently take your skull for a ride

another new york momentthis morning as i got off of the subway i saw a little girl, probably 4 years old, running in the cool air. she was giggling with each step, her tiny yellow umbrella wobbling against the wind. when she stopped, she turned around with a smile that took over her cheeks, and she happily squeezed out the word, "yesssss!" for some reason, seeing that moment made me really happy. movie magicthis weekend was great. i saw two movies -- gus van sant's last days and march of the penguins. both were great for different reasons. last days was a glimpse into what could possibly have happened in kurt cobain's last days... fictional, but suggestive, nonetheless. the mood wasn't wholly depressing, but it was dark. there was an appearance by kim gordon... who is a very minimal actress. but thurston moore was the musical consultant in the film. there is a song in the film that i think is supposed to be that lost nirvana track that was released with the boxset., "you know you're right." the editing of the film is much like a lot of gus van sant movies... the same scene displayed in different perspectives, circling back to retell the tale at a different point... all to let you know that you'll never really know what really happened at any time with anything. it's all perspective. i also saw march of the penguins. i have had a long fascination with penguins for a while. i mean, they are fucking cute. but they are more than that. they are tender creatures. i thought they mated for life, but in fact, they are serial monogamists. they mate monogamously for one year -- all to create one life. the courtship is adorable and daunting... and i realized us humans have it to easy when it comes to love. also, i couldn't resist the fact that morgan freeman narrates this movie. he's like the voice of god (refer to bruce almighty). ps. my friend drew made this short film, which stars his nephew... who happens to be isaac brock's son. dude, the kid is cute!! the film made me laugh out loud.
i posted a sonny boy williamson and screamin jay hawkins song in the jukebox above. so good.
oh baxter, you are my little gentleman...the summer keeps getting stickier and stickier. it's so humid out that the minute i walk out the door, i feel beads of perspiration forming all over my skin. ick. i have no idea what is going on this weekend. junkyard show in long island city (woops -- it's in queens, but right next to greenpoint in brooklyn) on saturday -- with i think, lightning bolt? remember the days when fitz used to throw those in williamsburg? how come the only thing that comes to mind with that show is the unpleasant thought of simmering in the heat with piles of junkyard goodies? i hope to fit in some time to relax. maybe a game of scrabble. and some kind of home made coconut rum concoction. oh my gosh, i almost forgot to mention the best part of summer is half days on fridays. yay! ps. i hear police are going to do random bag searches today in new york. is that really going to protect us from terrorist attacks?
last night the show was great! i was really happy with how things went, and loved all the people i met and hung out with. i'm all about forming a community bond with people and encouraging the support of bands. last night i felt like i was among some sweet, endearing people. i had never seen dr dog before, and they were super charming. just happy-go-lucky, feel-good loveliness. i was watching dtl's friend, sarah, the president of the dr dog fanclub swoon from the front of the stage. excellent! dirty on purpose started off their set with what i think is termed a brown out -- not quite a black out -- but the basically the power went out for about 15 seconds during their first song. they kept truckin and the power eventually came back on. sort of funny, and reminded me of the skate bowl incident where they actually played an entire song in the dark. people have been wondering where erika is. the band and her had an amicable parting, and we wish her all the best with au revoir simone -- which you might remember also includes annie who is dop's doug marvin's girlfriend. it's all in the family. if you know any female singers who can play a bunch of instruments, feel free to let us know... clap your hands played their best show yet. i had issues with some of their past shows, but they really stepped it up at southpaw and sounded more cohesive. and they played an encore, how hot? for those of you who didn't stick around for saints and lovers, you missed a band that is growing into their own. dennis' voice has always been a favorite of mine. i got about 3 hours of sleep last night, and worked a full day at work. goddamn. Labels: dirty on purpose
boy, have i been in the shittiest mood lately. but perhaps it's because i no longer have an ipod to constantly feed my brain music. why don't i have an ipod? well, i used to. but suddenly one day it stopped working, the fucker. now i hate ipod. why pay 500 bucks for a product that is suddenly going to stop working on you less than two years later?? fuck that shit. it's been several months now, and i've gotten used to going around without any music. but i think that the quality of my life has somewhat been compromised. i am reading more at least. currently, nine stories by jd salinger. next up, the neil young biography, shakey.
independent music in the future, in the presentsometimes i think i know where the future of music will head. sometimes i don't. how can we really predict what will be successful and what won't? i'm not sure about the trend in podcasting, but i think it will make music shows even more independent... but will it dilute or make it the scene stronger? i guess only the future will tell. anyhoo, here's a new cool podcasting show based out of nyc: indienyc
i just posted a shout out louds song in the jukebox. hmmm, my new theme song?
"what is hell? i maintain that it is the suffering of being unable to love." -- the brothers karamazovit's a boomerang that is constantly traveling back, tricking me in its retreat, but circling back again to hit me in the fucking head. my fucking heart.
sweet lordy.
good morning, sunshine! the earth says hello!the new willy wonka movie was actually quite entertaining. i heart johnny depp.
the haves and have nots.these past two weeks i have laughed. i have cried. i have slept. i have bartended. i have painted. i have bruises. i have scratches. i have hurt. i have been broke. i have loved. i have ignored. i have chatted. i have made many mistakes. i have regretted. i have enjoyed. i have shopped. i have wanted. i have given. i have biked. i have stayed awake all night. i have partied. i have rested. i have passed out. i have felt lonely. i have done nothing. i have felt loved. i have hugged. i have taken pictures. i have sweated. i have lost abandon. i have become wary. but i still have not found what i'm looking for.
the deli gives away free beer to indie rock dancers.true story.

hello from jini thought i would drop an electronic letter to you on this dreary, rainy morning. i had sort of a weird (but delightful) adventure on sunday. i went to have brunch with jenna in the city. then came back to williamsburg and helped joe paint the walls in his new place. paint got in my hair. then i went to annie's birthday party and made this amazing drink with grapefruit, vodka and watermelon juice. yummy. then i walked towards joe's place with dj and we found boxing gloves in the trash. dj put them on and started running down the street punching the air in front of him. joe was on a skateboard holding on to the back of dj's shirt. as they passed williamsburg cafe, people sitting outside pointed and laughed. i laughed too as i zoomed on my bike, trying to catch up with them. soon we got to joe's place and the place was fuming with enamel paint on the floor. i told joe he shouldn't sleep there because he would probably die of harmful inhalation or something. so we went over to my place. as we were passing by union pool, joe (as tradition would have it) suggested we grab a drink before heading home. so we did. we were surveying the people. it didn't start out being crowded at all. we went toward the outside area in the back. slowly as the night progressed, people started trickling in. it was one of those perfect nights -- not hot, not cold -- just perfect. eventually we ran into a couple friends and met a couple new ones. i had a lot of fun, surprisingly. the night really did exceed my expectations. last night i hung out with fiona at roshambo at galapagos in williamsburg, which is a stand up comedy/short film event put together by her friend aaron wilson, and partly drew of spoiler film fame. they are looking for a venue for the next spoiler event, so if you have a good suggestion, let drew know: drew @ drewbacca.com. it was really awesome seeing fiona and catching up with her. we all headed over to capones afterwards and ate that glorious brick oven pizza. i think i am starting to end up there way too often. but free pizza is hard to resist when you're living on a tight budget. i cannot wait until payday!! here are some of the funnier quotes heard during my vacation. for some reason, they are all sexual: "i've got something that would fit in your mouth perfectly. it rhymes with my penis." "i can only imagine how unpleasant your mother's vagina must be." "the d is wet!"
kayrock and wolfy - one sixpack short of a hippie death cult the first time i met wolfy, he was bartending at a bar around the corner of my house called sweetups. he was cute and charming and sometimes he would be missing a tooth. that's a pretty distinctive look. then i remember meeting kayrock, though i don't remember the exact moment or place... most likely in the smoke haze of luxx (rip), where we all used to hang out a lot back in its heyday. when anna and i were putting on the On the Moon Music rock and roll garage sale at luxx, kayrock and wolfy always took a booth to sell their screenprinted rock posters. i bought two: one for karaoke night at sweetups and one for the nada surf/sondre lerche tour. both are hanging in my room now. you might know of them from their "fuck bush" shirts... all around town. or that brown sugar tank that beyonce wore on the cover of rolling stone a while back. strange but true. tonight, jessica murray projects presents "one sixpack short of a hippie death cult," which will feature the posters and prints of kayrock and wolfy. the reception is tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. so if you want to see all fo the rad work they've produced, check it out tonight! there are also a series of concerts attached to this exhibit where kayrock and wolfy will screen a poster for each show. the first show features knife skills, no things (x liars, x him) and narchitect (x parts and labor) on july 13 at jessica murray projects. for more details, click here.

Word on the street is that the 2nd anniversary Vicious show at Southpaw is officially sold out. Damn that was fast!
yay for summer vacation!!!if pressed to recount the past week, i might actually pass out from exhaustion. let's just say i have had an unusually eventful, uneventful week. i mean, i have tried to do different things. and somehow it has turned out to be alright. thursday was the start of my two-week vacation from my dayjob. i was jumping for joy. exhilarated. happy happy joy joy. of course, i left work and went straight into two meetings, but the night was feeling good. that night i ended up sleeping on joe and george's futon for the last time in greenpoint, as they have just moved into the sugar factory building in williamsburg. their apartment is a total shithole right now, but the potential of the raw space is enormous. anyways, friday i don't think i did a whole lot. or i just don't remember. or it was just a sad day that i have blocked out from my mind. saturday, the band and i left for our show in albany. i had never been to albany before so it was at least a new destination for me. i rode in the van with joe and doug and george and dj rode up separately. riding in the van with doug and joe is a lot of fun, i have to say. we brought along an acoustic guitar and were doing sing-alongs. i learned the words to a few of their songs (the true lyrics, not the ones i make up in my head). it was just light and funny. when we got to albany, there were a bunch of tough looking people out front who were there for the hardcore show that had been going on there all day. the venue, valentine's, is your average bar/venue in that it had a pool table, ice hockey game and a bar stashed with every single beer and drink under the stars (including red bull, which i chugged). we liked the bartender howard who is also the booker. julia, another bartender, was a fan of the band and booked us up there. they were really great people who obviously have a love for music as strong as i do. bergory watson (aka greg) came up for the show, as did faniuella and sung bin. good times! we got back to new york at 4:30 in the morning and greg and joe crashed at my place. i had brunch with bergory the next day at lola's cafe on graham avenue in wburg. it was delicious and the sangria was potent. we got buzzed. i also bought an old german camera for $5 from one of my neighbor's yard sales. it was pretty amazing. i can't wait to develop the film. it's this wild camera with a viewfinder that is on top with all these reflective mirrors. bergory bought a drumset alarm clock, and we walked around the neighborhood playing the big band music that was coming out of the clock... until it died. i fell asleep again, but woke up later and jaunted over to prospect heights to meet up with anna, pat and naf. we played a little in-between poker, but honestly i think gambling is a bore. so we waited for joe to meet up with us and went to pat's house... where they played more poker. joe, naf and i decided to call it a night and head back over to wburg. joe and i then decided to get a drink at union pool... where we ran into lots of people... including joe robinson. hi, joe robinson. and madeleine from hula. we closed out the bar and went home, passed out watching anchorman. oh baxter, you are my little gentleman... yesterday joe and i zoomed around the neighborhood and then met up with tanya and sophie. we later went to a bbq that was thrown by keith from we are scientists and c.o. from bishop allen. i had never met him before so that was fun. we then went over to relish to eat a proper meal. it was delicious. sophie played in the grass with the deer and mary statue most of the time. then joe and i parted ways with sophie and tanya and headed over to the sugar factory 4th of july party, just in time for the fireworks. it was pretty awesome just to sit there with some friends and watch the sky sparkle. i ran into juliet, shara and this guy davy who i used to work with at alloy. it was so crazy running into davy. i hadn't seen him in so long, and we were never that close, but it's always cool running into someone after a long time because it gives you a new perspective on them. i feel like i have changed so much since the alloy days... i feel like a completely different person, and i always wonder if other people think that too. anyhoo, we then went to a party on dobbins street in greenpoint, but that party was over when we got there, so we headed back to wburg. joe had to sleep so we decided to just go home. we parted ways with juliet. on the way home though joe wanted to get some free pizza from capone's, so we went over there for a bit. joe and i teamed up on pool against these two guys. we won all three times, and decided we should be pool sharks on the road. then we went home and started watching kill bill, but called it a night during the oren inishi part.
