Today I woke up, and I felt like I was floating through a Wong Kar Wai movie. Then I closed my eyes and imagined that this song permeated the soundtrack. "You put your hands into your head and then smiles cover your heart."

Mazzy Star - Fade Into You

I want to hold the hand inside you
I want to take a breath that's true
I look to you and I see nothing
I look to you to see the truth
You live your life
You go in shadows
You'll come apart and you'll go black
Some kind of night into your darkness
Colors your eyes with what's not there.

Fade into you
Strange you never knew
Fade into you
I think it's strange you never knew

A stranger's light comes on slowly
A stranger's heart without a home
You put your hands into your head
And then smiles cover your heart

Fade into you
Strange you never knew
Fade into you

I think it's strange you never knew

i hung out a little bit at 186 on friday, pre-les savy fav, and had such a fun time watching karl call into the "tana time" tv show like eight times in a row. this show was airing on manhattan neighborhood network, and the stuff that kyle was throwing at her was so funny, i was on the floor several times in uncontrollable laughter. did anyone else watch it? if you click through to her show above, you'll see her show description is: "I can’t tell you the concept for the show, there is no time. Because it’s Tana Time, Tana Time."

on friday, les savy fav was fun and crazy, but not in the same way as the olden days. tim harrington was wild, but not as wild as he used to be. but that doesn't mean i don't love. i still do. as well as the rest of les savy fav. a highlight of the evening for me was when they sang "adopduction." that's such a scream-along song. "kidnapped! i dreamed i was kidnapped!"

thunderbirds are now! were a lot of fun too. kind of like a ROCK go! team or something. lots of people running on and off stage with all sorts of instruments. i guess new french kiss records signing rahim was the same way but i only caught their last song. they sort of reminded me of the rapture... the drummer took one of his drums and marched around the stage banging it at the end of their set...

poor fred armisen (from snl) totally bombed that night because his projector wasn't working. that sucks!! i was so drunk at the end of the night that i couldn't make it to the afterparty at lolita. i hopped in a cab, went home, and passed out.

on saturday, i woke up so early, got some work done, and then headed into the city to meet up with doug's friend doug who i have deemed "doug the lawyer." i walked around the howl festival a little bit around tompkins square park and ran into kyle and dan at the mud truck. i've never had mud truck coffee before but it was excellent. i definitley recommend... doug and i went to see the new minutemen documentary, we jam econo, at anthology film archives. while the story was in essence good, and the footage of the band performing live was great, something felt a little unpolished about it -- but perhaps that's ok.

then afterwards we headed to queens to hang out at ps1's "warm up" saturdays. i had no idea what i was in for. i went to hang out a little bit with my friend tom who was bartending -- but then i realized when i got there that there would be no hanging out. there were like at least 1000 people there. it was madness. doug and i said a quick hello to tom who was fiercely pouring beers. then we went into the galleries to check out the art. there were three levels. the building used to be a school, so it was like classroom after classroom of art. and while the art was entertaining and interesting (sometimes), i was more into watching the diverse group of people there. there was an entire jam-packed crowd outside dancing to some bad house music (or whatever). then there were a bunch of people just sitting around on the ground. and there were tons of people walking around the exhibits. hot fashionistas and scuffy indie rock boys everywhere. i guess this is where they all go on saturdays...

on sunday, since i didn't really get to hang out with him on saturday, i met up with tom for brunch and then we went to see 40 year old virgin. that shit was hilarious. i want to own it on dvd -- that and wedding crashers and napoleon dynamite. my days of boredom would be over if i owned these on dvd.

i'm easing back into the show circuit
last week shara gave me two free tickets to the death cab for cutie, decemberists, stars show in central park. i was very excited. i took my coworker mary to the show. we got there and there was a pleasant breeze and good spirits in the air. a bunch of her friends were coming up to the park to enjoy the show just outside the gates, where many indie kids were camped out. we ran into a couple kids who bought fake tickets for $80. we felt so bad for them... so we sold them our tickets for like $40 so they could go enjoy the show... this is just after stars played (they were great by the way). then mary and i took the money and went downtown to mary ann's and had some dinner and margaritas. fun night!

last night i went to see the most serene republic, the big sleep and kinski at mercury lounge. i arrived there with the effervescent jay good times. we moved up to the front for the most serene republic, and we ran into glenn from coolfer. i was quickly mesmerized, not by the overjoyed, bug-eyed lead singer, but by the bombastic, wailing drummer. dude was totally hot... and pounding on those drums. i thought they were going to smash into bits. for the most part i enjoyed the laid-back girl/energized boy vocal play, but sometimes the male lead singer was a bit too much to watch. so i just watched the drummer. i haven't heard the album yet, but i hear it's not as frantic as the live show.

dtl got there just in time for the big sleep set. we've been fans of danny, sonya and gabe for a while now, so we were psyched. kevbo joined us shortly after the set started. i had to say i was pretty into the set, and was tapping my foot along to the beats. they are mostly instrumental, which i enjoy, but i even find myself liking the little bit of vocals they add into their set. sonya has this intuitive sexiness that is captivating. danny is just plain raw. i like. i can't wait for their album... i hear it's almost done!! someone from girls against boys is mixing their tracks as we speak.

between sets, dtl, kevin and i went to visit andy at cake shop. this is what we call "treating." we are on the hunt for sugar, and boy did we find it. we bought a vegan peanut butter chocolate whoopie pie. the thing was humungous. we split it three ways, and subsequently went into some kind of sugar coma. whoa.

i stayed for about half of kinski's set. they played mostly stuff from the new album... which isn't as good as some of their older material. they are tough dudes though, as dtl pointed out. even the girl in the band is a tough dude. word. i like tough. plus, i will always like them though for pulling out that psychedelic jazz flute. that was a classic moment.

this is why i love australians

when youth group were last in town, i got to hang with them a little bit. they are really nice, cool guys. and this recent interview with them proves how awesome they are. check it out here.

from the past
stephie sent me another link to our past... one of the first places we regularly frequented in new york was BIG CUP, a gay coffee shop in Chelsea. i am informed that it is now closing. our friend brian robertson (where are you?) took us there. he was also responsible for taking us to HELL. boy, i miss those days...

daylight's for the birds

i was a big o!a!l! fan and was sad when they seeped out of existence. but claudia, pee and brad are back with a couple new folks with their new dreamy project, daylight's for the birds. thanks for the heads up, dtl.

the big sleep
i heart the big sleep. you know it already. their music is consuming, yet invigorating. mostly instrumental, the trio knows how to play with dyanmics. i saw kinski at sxsw 04 with dtl... i remember liking them, but i don't remember why.

anyhoo, here's the flyer for the show!

nada surf e-card
check out a few tracks from the upcoming nada surf album, the weight is a gift, through this nada surf e-card.

nyu alumni news
every once in a while stephie and i get updated on nyu alumni news. we both went to school with the guy who won the beautiful new yorker contest on gawker... slightly disturbing, having known amsden in j-school. remember professor dick blood? yowza.

mommy and daddy
it has been forever since i've seen mommy and daddy. but i can distinctly remember the first time i saw them. it was at luxx way back in the day, and i just totally dug their energy. i still think they are cool and sweet and all of that gushy stuff.

they have some new tracks posted on their new pure volume page. go check them out! i think if you haven't heard them in a while you will be surprised at how full and tough their sound is.

you should also buy tickets to see them play with thunderbirds are now! at mercury lounge on september 21. buy tickets for that show here...

nada surf
i just bought tickets to the nada surf and say hi to your mom show at bowery in october. this show is going to sell out, so get your tickets in advance! buy them here. i'm so excited!!

things have got to be looking up.

so... let's see. i am extremely excited about the les savy fav show coming up this friday at bowery ballroom! motherfucker! these guys never play live anymore but they are one of my favorite live bands. i fondly remember falling in love with tim harrington at siren a few years ago. i think this bowery ballroom show might have been the last time i saw les savy fav. in which case, this friday is going to be spectacular. ooooooooh, i hope you got tickets because the show is sold out and shit.

here's my loose record preview of the show...

the best ice cream flavor in the motherfucking world.

this is the best flavor of ben & jerry's there is, and if they take it away because it is a "limited batch", i will just have to kill myself, won't i?

unless they make something that is called "chocolate coma." now that is a brilliant idea, holmes.

ever watch greg the bunny?
bet you didn't know greg the bunny started on IFC before it went to Fox and bombed. now it is back on IFC, and you can watch the first episode online at IFC before it premieres on the telly. it's very woody allen ala annie hall. there are some racy moments here. may not be work-safe. hahahahaha!

i remember when i used to want to be a director...
oh those middle school days when your teacher makes you do a presentation on what you'd like to be when you grow up. what did i do my presentation on? i said i wanted to direct music videos and films. oh so silly. what clips did i use in my presentation? i showed the original music video of nirvana's "smells like teen spirit" and weird al yankovic's spoof "smells like nirvana." then i showed a clip from one of my favorite movies, silence of the lambs, (i had a slight anthony hopkins obsession back then). isn't it glorious (a recent favorite word of mine) to think of how we aspired so much when we were young?

but some people really go out there and do it -- and they do it with such art. remember the palm pictures director's label dvd series? i know a lot of people who own the ones on chris cunningham, spike jonze and michel gondry. well there's a new series out now featuring the works of mark romanek, stephane sednaoui, anton corbijn and jonathan glazer. these people just blow me away with their creative concepts and their execution of these concepts. i mean i loooooooove that nirvana "heart shaped box" video. the colors are so alive and juxtaposed with the band's apathy and distrust with the world. it was just perfect. other featured videos in this series include some of my favorite video memories: u2's "one," unkle's "rabbit in your headlights," radiohead's "karma police," johnny cash's "hurt," fiona apple's "criminal," madonna's "rain," lenny kravitz's "are you gonna go my way," nine inch nails' "closer" and many more.

here check out the trailer for yourself -- it made me salivate.

summer is flying by
well what the hell have i been up to? this is a hard question to answer as my memory has oft been failing me lately. i'm like one of those machines that churns out the work... but i don't really remember much about it. i am going to turn to my trusty day planner to help me fill in some details...

i went to see other passengers and a place to bury strangers at cake shop on july 28. i remember drinking a couple sake shots with nick, and then enjoying the maddening darkness that pervades other passengers and their psychedelic rock. then came the sonic annihilation of a place to bury strangers, whose music has this strange sad romance to it, where their experimental sounds swoop in and out like ghosts looking for their lost loves. andy at cake shop rules. thank you, andy.

the next day, joe/george/ollie/greg/joe had another rooftop party at their sugar factory loft. the butcherings and mahi mahi played. i don't remember much about the butcherings, but mahi mahi was awesome -- nick described them as a cross between fischerspooner and lightning bolt. that is a perfect description so i won't try to top it. the two-piece is from providence, and i think they are playing a couple more shows soon here in the city... check their website for the real deal sked, as i'm a little foggy today.

then the next day, of course, i went to see dirty on purpose play at sound fix records -- our local williamsburg record store. they played a quieter set where only vocals were mic'd and it sounded simply amazing in that room. all of our peeps showed up in support, so it really felt like a cozy lil performance. joe's daughter sophie totally stole the show with her cuteness. so adorable.

on sunday morning, the last day in a hot hot hot july, i met up with jenna to drink at supercore -- a japanese style cafe in the 'burg. there was this ambient electronic laptop slash instrument duo making lots of weird noises. i thought i should have some rave gear on or something. after a while it was slightly too much to listen to. but whatever, supercore was still damn fun. a bunch of people met up with us and we went over to mugs for dinner -- where we ran into even more people. it was like a snowball effect.

then george and i left and headed over to bowery to see a place to bury strangers open up for brian jonestown massacre. i have to say something here -- i was expecting a lot out of this group after watching dig!. i mean, they were built up so much in that movie, so i was really looking forward to their show. but there was such a disconnect between the image and the band, that i actually ended up being extremely bored and exhausted. they jammed way to much on completely uninteresting parts -- rather indulgent. the middle band, mazarin, had a pretty way with their shoegaze... sometimes their music swayed like mazzy star (without the female vocals). i would have to see them again. but the best band of the night was clearly a place to bury strangers. they knocked everyone else's performance out of the way with their tight set. the music was together in full force and in line with the dual projections they had going on with the music. fucking awesome.

august started some kind of weird renewal in my life. i reconnected with my uptown cousins and their kids, carson (4) and zoe (3). i have to say that my cousins kids are damn cute. and i totally missed them. i was happy that they remembered who i was because i used to babysit them a lot a few years ago. they call me "emo jin" because "emo" means "aunt" in korean. but we all know how that double entendre works too. haha.

then i was lucky enough to have dinner with ben weber, a band manager of one of my favorite local bands -- nada surf. he's one of the nicest people i've met in the industry, and we enjoyed lots of good food at schillers in the lower east side. including a delicious mango champagne drink. yummmmy! i got to pick his brain a little bit on managing and the music industry. so. cool. so. cool. i can't stop listening to their new album, the weight is a gift.

the next day i found out ascap was sponsoring those indie night school nights that tom sean from the black spoons has been putting together. this one happened to be about getting press in new york city, featuring top music bloggers and print journalists. it was pretty interesting to see what they all had to say about getting covered your band covered in new york, juxtaposed with my personal experience in getting bands covered in new york media and beyond (remember the rest of the country?). it was a pretty informative panel for bands who have no beginning point of reference, and a lot of young bands were there in full force at the sold-out event. (PS: the next indie night school event is tomorrow at pianos featuring many of today's hottest band managers (interpol, blonde redhead, vhs or beta, etc), and i'm sure with its stellar lineup, it will sell out... you can buy tickets in advance here).

then on saturday i went to see sam champion at bowery ballroom for the second time. so good! and so much fun. i ran into some people i haven't seen in a while. it was lots of random goodness. i could only stay for a few songs of the love as laughter set but i really liked what i heard. sam jayne is a purdy interesting character on stage... though i'm not sure if he came alive for me because daniel was right next to me whispering all the inside jokes into my ear. i guess being clued in by someone on all the intricacies of the songs and stuff definitely bolsters the experience. i liked love as laughter a lot. next time i will have to catch their full set.

the next week i went to see coney island swan dive and mark mcadam at sin-e. mark mcadam has a full band on stage with him -- this was part of his residency at sin-e. mark is the kind of guy who really acts out his songs and expresses each line with his face and body language. so it's like they are coming alive like little stories told by the fire. i thought he was a good songwriter, but the music wasn't really in my taste. maybe just a tad too poppy for me. but i can't deny the goodness of his voice.

coney island swan dive was great. like i've said before, they are a band that does country covers of pop songs. in their set: "i want you to want me" by cheap trick, "in bloom" by nirvana, and many many others. they are such a novelty band, and i hope they play more often so people will come out and experience this more. i never really liked country, but i like angie's voice and personality.

then i realized i had gone to sing karaoke with all of these folks before... and now i know why they were all clearly superior singers to me. jeeeez!!

last thursday i dj'd at magnetic field in brooklyn heights because skippy asked me to (thank you skippy!). i was scared because i had never been to this bar before. but when i got there it was like a nicer version of pete's candy store. i really dug the vibe there. the owners were super nice. they had nice booths along the side and a good-sized stage. i did not meet this guy, jerry, who seems to be meeting all of my friends. i did not bring out the cat ears. i did not wear short shorts (until after the gig). it just wasn't that kind of crowd. but it was a sugary nice crowd.

and the sound was really great! i saw the consultants for the first time -- and they really reminded me of velocity girl. that's not a bad thing at all since i adore copacetic. the mugs were great as well -- male vocals -- but the same poppy, shimmy vibe as the consultants. both of these bands are local bands i had never seen before, and i really enjoyed their sets a lot. i will have to keep an eye out for them.

voxtrot was so much fun! they were very much like the smiths, but in a bombastic way that goes beyond any bad derivative way. they were like the smiths in a nostalgic awesome kind of way. (what a horrible description, i'm so sorry). basically, they are awesome. when skippy introduced me to them that night, they told me they played with dirty on purpose in austin. i totally remember that show was one of the band's most stressful shows because the van had broken down before they could get to the venue, john mueller's bbq. i think footage from that show is seen on new york noise... according to shirley beans.

i was so happy to see jay, beach, noah, anna, pat and aeri show up and support me at my dj gig. you should have seen me jump up and down when i saw them walk into the bar. i heart you all!! those margaritas tasted like apple juice. the big hit of the night i think was the smiths' "ask." i mean how fun is it to belt out: IF IT'S NOT LOVE THEN IT'S THE BOND THE BOND THE BOND THE BOND THE BOND THE BOND THE BOND THAT WILL BRING US TOGETHER!

let me tell you, so much fun.

so anyways, we all piled into a cab afterwards and headed into the city. grabbed one drink at 2a, then i went to pass out at aeri's new apartment. aeri is my friend from dc who just moved to new york a couple weekends ago. it's weird to have her here in the flesh because most of our correspondence has been through IM. technology is an amazing thing.

this past weekend i went to see broken flowers, the new jim jarmusch with bill murray... which was depressing. and disjointed. and completely not plot driven. i'm just not sure if i liked it at all. also: the theater, angelika, has seats that are too narrow and blasts the A/C (like any other normal theater), so i was sort of uncomfortable and cold at the same time. hard to enjoy.

i also saw the aristocrats, which is a documentary on the dirtiest, oldest joke in the comedy world, called "the aristocrats". i had many favorite moments in the film but i thought the documentary was a tad too long. i did enjoy bob saget's version of the joke though. (jay, go see this one!) i also liked several other versions, but a lot of them did fall flat. yesterday at a video conference meeting at work, one of my coworkers broke out the drew carey click of the hands, and i burst out laughing. i couldn't believe he did that.

"i'm always trying to figure out whether if a woman is funny, she can still be beautiful. there are some very attractive comediennes, but if you had to choose between calling them beautiful and calling them funny, you'd call them funny. sometimes i think that extreme beauty must be absolutely humorless. but then i think of marilyn monroe and she had the best funny lines. she might have been a lot of fun if she'd found the right comedy niche. we might be laughing at skits on 'the marilyn monroe show' today."

don't be alarmed... i'm really not that depressed.
i had a pretty good weekend. on saturday, susan and i went to mccarren park and watched hipsters in american apparel shorts play kickball. during the course of the game, there was a dirt tornado that formed in between the kickball field and the field where some little kids were playing softball. yes, peeps, i witnessed a natural phenomenom right in the middle of my brooklyn nabe. it was fascinating because it reached all the way up into the sky, and everyone stared at it in utter amazement. it headed for the little kids, and they ran away from it... totally freaked out.

i also squirted many people at bowery ballroom with my water gun at the sam champion show on saturday night. i think most people enjoyed that, and it certainly amused me. next time, it might be filled with some tasty vodka.

coney island swan dive @ sin-e

this is where i point you to a band that you probably heard me talk about once before. like i've said before, and i'll say it again here -- i simply adore coney island swan dive. they are a country trio that covers pop songs -- everything from cheap trick to christina aguilera. they don't play that often, so that makes them even more extraordinary. at least to me. they are playing tomorrow at sin-e with their own mark mcadam. be there and experience the glory that is coney island swan dive.

mistakes i have made
i feel like i've been walking through a series of fogs, hazy new-york tinted fogs that are crooked and streaked with late-night cocktails and confessions, spontaneous motives and optimistic wishes. it's so hard to explain the circumstances of my life. somehow i ended up where i am, and i had no idea i would ever get here... and i'm not sure that i know where the future will take me. will everything turn out to be a disaster or a blessing?

i guess i'm the kind of girl who is terribly open. that serves as both a positive and negative for me. while i strive to be ultra-friendly and kind, i am also in a position where people can take advantage of my openness. i'm vulnerable to getting my feelings hurt a lot... and often times they do get hurt. but what is the alternative? closing up shop and avoiding life? i hope it never comes to that.

it's true. i'm afraid of getting hurt. i'm afraid of being stupid. i'm afraid of wishing for too much and having my dreams crushed into a million pieces. i wish the next steps were clearer to me. i wish i could confidently go forth in my life and know i am making the best choices for myself. i wish that i felt like the world wasn't against me, but most times i do feel that way. even though i know i am lucky to have such an amazing group of friends who love and support me. the truth is, i am looking for something more. probably something that doesn't exist. but it's extremely difficult and painful to admit this because i have this odd-ball feeling that it is staring at me straight in the face, and there is nothing i can do to reach out and grasp it. i think i have to wait for it to reach and out and grasp me. who knows when and if that will ever happen.

i started to read the philosophy of andy warhol, a book susan lent to me this weekend. it begins:

"i wake up and call B. B is anybody who helps me kill time. B is anybody and i'm nobody. B and i. i need B because i can't be alone. except when i sleep. then i can't be with anybody."

how true is that? this book is fucking hilarious.

bloggers talk off-the-blog
meet them in the flesh.

here's a blogger tip, i'll share with you. control-s is a short cut to pressing "publish post". saves me a few seconds every time i post!

little more than a cameo
today i was listening to another mix tape from high school. there is a lemonheads song on it... "bit part." remember that one? it made me nostalgic. and lo and behold, evan dando is djing at hiro tonight.

lemonheads - bit part

I want a bit part in your life,
A walk-on would be fine.
I just want a bit part in your life,
(a bit part in your life).

I want a bit part in your life,
Rehearsing all the time.
I just want a bit part in your life,
(a bit part in your life).

Little more than a cameo
Nothing traumatic when I go
Little more than a stand-in,
I won’t need reprimanding.

also, here is my little loose record preview of sparkle motion's hot august nights series at magnetic field featuring acts i adore -- like voxtrot and mark mcadam. no one rules the happy indie pop like skippy mcfadden. hell yeah. i think i might be human jukeboxing one of these nights. i'll keep you posted on details as they develop. get ready, park slope.

time machine @ joe's pub -- they're that hip-hop group i was telling you about. jeremy would say they are "bananas" and NOT in that gwen stefani way. here's the flyer for the show. it's really cheap!

mix for jin
back in high school, there was a guy who did me the great service of sharing music through mix tapes. i have a whole collection of his mix tapes -- and i still listen to them. i'm writing about this mostly to put context to the recent post of sebadoh lyrics. i was listening to a mix he made for me called "mix for jin". i think i was in 9th grade when he gave it to me. mix tapes are a lost art. do you save your mix tapes? what's on your favorite mix tapes? this is the tracklisting for my favorite... as it is actually written on the cassette cover.
