the ultimate time waster

oh lordy. as if i had time to waste... but this is so tempting! web sudoku!

this morning i was on the subway and my mp3 player ran out of battery so i didn't have any music to fill my head. it was right in the middle of modest mouse's "custom concern." i was sipping my americano, which i've recently become addicted to. i started thinking about things i missed in my life. it made me nervous because i don't like feeling vulnerable.

i watched the dylan/scorsese documentary, no direction home, on sunday with susan and doug. we sat there mesmerized for over 3 hours. i was fascinated that such an old voice came out of dylan when he was so babyfaced, and he didn't really care too much... or so it seems. he was so contradictory in many ways. he didn't want to make sense to his fans. he didn't care about giving them what they wanted. instead, he stuck to what he wanted to do with his life, no matter whose feelings got hurt or what priceless records he had to steal.

to continue my sort of canadian fetish, i've begun to watch this defunct tv show called wonderfalls, courtesy of netflix. it's about a slacker ivy leaguer who works in a niagara falls souvenir shop. inanimate objects start talking to her and telling her what to do. as a result, she starts helping people, much to her slacker chagrin. it's really quirky. but there should be more moments when animals are talking. and what keeps me watching? two reasons... tyron leitso (matthew fox lookalike) and lee pace.

in other walkmen news...

peter bauer had a baby boy, named otis. see the lil dude...

apparently i am not the walkmen's biggest fan. this girl totally trumped me with her tattoo.

last night at the oxford collapse/mommy and daddy show, i learned that...

1) drummers are amazing and fun to watch.
2) cat head masks on stage are fun, too.
3) the most exciting part of sex for a man is the handjob and the first few moments of entry...
4) ...mostly because guys have to think about other nonsexual things in order not to come during sex. is this really true?
5) oxford collapse have gotten much catchier.
6) mommy and daddy's song franconia road is very very sexy.

cmj was better this year... but i was running around like crazy.

and now i'm exhausted. working this festival is a shitload of work, but it's sweetly rewarding all at the same time. i didn't get to see as many bands as other people who were simple pleasureseekers (i'm sorta jealous...), but hey, all in a day's work. here's some photos from my festival experience...

spencer created cool projections to hang above the crowd at the loft party on friday... he's the same guy who does the projections for a place to bury strangers...

vaz played a mean set... i thought paul was going to fall off the edge a few times into the crowd. hot.

yes, dirty on purpose. you'll see them quite a bit on this page. all in a day's work.

oh i almost forgot to mention -- i finally met jerry yeti.

i heart jay belin.

youth group were great. "shadowland" was so awesome!! that ending is smashing.

there were people MOSHING violently to a place to bury strangers. whoa.

the lovemakers making out...

and pumping out their brand of dancey new wave.

superfans dancing to the lovemakers... turning our loft party into a disco dance party. i was like, where the hell am i?

dirty on purpose, chin up chin up @ mercury lounge

that chin up chin up song "we should never have lived like we were skyscrapers" makes me wanna dance like crazy. it builds into a frenzy... oh so quietly, sneaking up on you... then you can't control yourself. your body moves in spasms. thank you.

the sound at this show was so amazing that many people came up to me and said it was the best dirty on purpose show ever. MARK is the man behind the board with the magic touch. thank you mark and mercury lounge for having us.

dirty on purpose @ soundfix records

soundfix has beautiful sound. the quiet, intimate setting was perfect for more poignant numbers like "cheat death" and "go back to sleep."

knife skills @ cake shop

knife skills were awesome. the deli thought so too... and even quoted me.

if you picked up the deli magazine, maybe you noticed perry, kip and i got interviewed on being independent band managers. i sound like such a nerd. haha.

rawr.

check out the dancing girl behind fon-lin. she was amazing and very punk rock... but how old is she???

trick & the heartstrings @ pianos

one of the biggest surprises for me was trick and the heartstrings. josh has been talking my ear off about them for so long! they are like prince, meets the police, meets the clash... jeremy brought up the clash reference. and they have these amazing coordinated dance moves that i'm really into -- so amusing. it's like oddball provocative. it makes sense that these guys were nyu drama majors because they really knew how to put on an entertaining show. my favorite song was called "i've got sex on me" though i liked the bjork and mazzy star cover... listening to their mp3s is nothing like seeing them live. definitely go see them.

shout! / ASCAP party @ bar 13

free pizza and pbr and youth group. yummy.

some thoughts on the ascap showcase last night @ sin-e

nicole atkins and the sea
i like her voice a lot. but her songs have room for growth. what's up with that bass player? i like the song with all the clapping.

priestess
priestess know how to put on a show. that drummer was sick. i took a photo with marc's hat to the left.

boy kill boy
boy kill boy are a british band that's like the libertines mixed with a clockwork orange with a dash of the killers.

tried to make it over to pianos for lio's showcase but by the time i got there, it was over. boooo. but lio was in good spirits because his showcase was packed (as it should be).

we also tried going to the addvice party with two gallants at cake shop... which i didn't remember to rsvp for. the guy at the door was a dick, probably because he didn't have any cupcakes all night. ha.

syndication
last night i went to the syndicate party @ downtime, and it turned into a packed shitshow... but not the good kind. most of the people at the party were industry or college radio (makes sense since the syndicate is a radio promotion company), so it was a pretty diverse mix. i ended up running into a ton of people there, which was cool, because i didn't really expect to know anyone. they had all sorts of goodies for attendees -- everything from ascap/syndicate earplugs, pretzels, popcorn, twizzlers, ring pops, taffy, energy drinks and free beer and well drinks. there were three floors to the place, and each floor had a shitload of people. there were also bands playing on the bottom floor... but whoever i caught on stage (stretch arm strong? say anything? nightmare of you?) said something really cheesy to the audience: "this one is for the ladies!" i thought for a second that i was an extra in a scene for some awful WB teen drama. the sweaty room was too much for me, so we made our way to the top floor again, finished our beer and then headed back out into the open air. it was pretty funny.

paul westerberg - "love untold"

They were gonna meet
On a Rocky Mountain street
Two bashful hearts beat in advance
Their hands were gonna sweat
It was all set
She ain't showed up yet
Still a good chance

It's a love untold
It's a love untold

Checking on her face
Checks his sleeve for his ace
And both just in case wear clean underwear
Games would be played
Excuses would be made
The stupid things they said
In their prayers

Oh about a love untold
It's a love untold

Soft hands slowly move across the blank white page
Thinking of words for my silent lips and fingers to obey

They were gonna meet on a crummy little street
It never came to be I'm told
Does anyone recall the saddest love of all
The one that lets you fall nothing to hold
It's the love untold...
Once upon a love untold
Just another love untold

i love sam beam

i had to jet out of the iron & wine show before it officially ended, but i caught the majority of it i think... watching the hold steady in a seated theater is kind of weird. especially when they are shrouded with smoke and fog and laser lights. is that where my tuition money went? that new student center is BANANAS. anyways, the hold steady actually won me over yesterday after a while of not really liking them. that lead singer clapped more last night than clap your hands say yeah ever will onstage. i adored him and the jumping keyboardist. i squealed when the guitarist swirled his guitar around his neck without missing a note and the bassist was tracing godknowswhat on the floor of the ginormous stage. fun! we wanted to pour beer over everyone and pass the tequila bottle around, but...

sam beam was simply glorious... capturing the hearts of all those freshmen. i always think he looks like there's a white aura or halo around him. everything about him seems so pure. his voice is filled with magical whispers that tickle and entice. oh so delicately. some dude shouted out that he loved him, and sam beam replied, "how come girls never say that to me?" i wanted to scream out, i love you, sam beam, marry me! haha.

a trip down blogger memory lane

when i used to publish my photo galleries...

my first "blog" post ever was about... adrian grenier.

i ran into jco, my first roommate out of college and former show-goer, the other day on the street. i remember way back in the day when she was the only one who ever signed my guestbook. those were some funny days! i have to email her and catch up.

do you remember when oolong (the bunny with things on its head) died? sad day. this week, i also had my first correspondence with peter bauer from the walkmen. both peter and kimya dawson took my "who's your indie rock boyfriend" quiz. peter got stephen malkmus and kimya got adam green. cute! if you want to take this slightly dated quiz... click here.

my first siren festival

steal this indie look!

hipster becomes mainstream... when there is a lipstick color called hipster and a book called the hipster handbook.

when i first fell in love with kexp.org... this week i was also obsessed with the french kicks' wwfkd column... i used to submit questions all the time under different names... and they would actually answer them. it cracked me up.

when i first watched coupling. and crushed on jeff murdock.

my first on the moon music show with the moldy peaches. this is also the week of the first time i ever corresponded with scott from stereogum it was about the walkmen interview he did for swingset magazine. whoa.

les savy fav and pineapples

iraq

when the apes singer stole my camera and i was a celeb lookalike in jane magazine

more walkmen-mania

liars started a blog and there was a picture of angus and karen kissing.

back in the days when laura, audrey and jasper used to attend dirty on purpose shows. this was before i started managing them.

donewaiting.com's duffy starts a label
the first release off of robert duffy's label, sunken treasure records, is a band called the celebrity pilots. i took this right off of donewaiting.com -- you can stream the band's entire album in its entirety on their site. it's really awesome when people get to start cool ventures like record labels, especially when they're promoting some good bands. donewaiting.com has been putting on some really good shows, representing in the midwest, along with woxy.com. i'm beginning to like the middle of the country more and more... strange, isn't it?

ascap concert to benefit katrina victims
ascap, my day job is doing a little something-something to benefit the katrina victims. this is actually very cool. if you are an ascap member and want to donate to the katrina victim fund, you can contact ascap to make a donation, and then ascap will then match your donation... so it's doubling your donation! i know many of you bands out there are ascap members so if you are putting together some kind of charity show, feel free to donate to ascap and double the donation. click here for more information...

also here is a new york times compiled list of where you can donate or help the relief fund...

a favorite pastime
something that i don't do that often anymore for some reason or another is go out for a few drinks with the girls. lately it's been too much hang time with the dudes. and that's just not healthy. so last night i went out to a blast from the nyu past -- shades of green. shades of green is a rinky dink irish pub near irving plaza. i used to go there during college because it was one of those places that served me without an ID. i don't know if that is the case anymore, but the same cheesy people were drinking there. therefore, this was the exact right place to get a little sloshed while gabbing. over and out.

seeking a perfection
one of the most satisfying feelings in the world to me is the feeling of my cheek pressing against my soft pillow when i'm really really fucking tired. that single act can make me so deliriously happy. and then i fall asleep.

another equally gratifying experience is the first perfect kiss. when your lips touch another's, and it's just the best possible match in the universe, at least for five seconds or so. a sigh escapes you, you just can't help it.

the other great feeling comes from the comforting bear hug. you know, the kind of hug that cradles your dreams, and makes you feel like everything going to be a-o-fucking-k...

i wonder what perfection is to other people. those are only a few of my perfections.

oh lordy what the fuck?
i feel like there is not much to be happy about these days. katrina has devastated the hope of this country (and the world), much like many of these other major disasters that our generation has endured and witnessed and cried for -- 9/11 and the tsunami and others. i'm looking into ways i can specifically help... i'll let you know what i come up with.

sometimes i think, well what's the fucking point? and why are people around me so retarded? the music business (and some distorted reality of popularity) really changes people, and usually not for the better... why? because so much is dependent on how "trendy" or "cool looking" you are. you are totally spoiled. but it's an empty life. i'm looking for something more. of course, that's no surprise. people change. life changes you. (duh) you become a different person, but hopefully the basic essence of who you are remains inside the affected shell.

i mean, even i have changed so much in the last three years. but i haven't forgotten what's important -- good friends and trying to make your friends' lives a little better with your support. of course, knowing who your real friends are is the tricky part... and often times, you'll find that friendships of convenience dissolve in times of hardship. that's just the way life works, i guess. am i sad about it? i dunno...

right now, the new york scene is totally like a "whatever" to me. i'm not concerned about being cool... just nice and honest. and i think that freaks people in new york out because, here, it is all about being cool. it's all about your persona... and i'm not really sure what my persona is. but i just don't care that much. i just keep plugging away, working on what i believe in. and it's been really paying off. i've been really happy with the way things have been going for me in my little management venture. hours and hours of work and patience go into this every day. i feel like things are paying off because of the honesty of my work. there's no pretension. just belief. and hope. it hasn't died yet.
