alarm clocks and dreams and waking upi'm not really a morning person. or a night person, i guess. i think i'm at my best late afternoon or early evening... but that's probably most people. the other night i had a dream where i could not turn my alarm clock off, no matter what i did to it. i even unplugged the damn thing. anyhoo, i started googling a little, and i found other other cultures don't use an alarm clock to wake up. here are the alternatives to alarm clocks. and here's a note to what alarm clocks mean in dreams...

this week seems busyon monday i want to try and catch eugene mirman at pianos... but it may not work out timing-wise... then on tuesday, i'm going to see wolf parade at north six. that should be a good one. i've never seen them live, but their album has been growing on me... and every other blogger seems to think they are the shit. which of course doesn't mean anything! bwahahaha. on wednesday, i forget what i am doing. can anyone remind me? probably go to band practice, and chill out on some hawaiian punch shizz. on thursday, i'm going to the wolf parade/dirty on purpose show at nyu. maybe ambulance afterwards, but it all depends on how business goes at the show. dirty on purpose, the a-sides, okay paddy, the teeth @ the khyberlast night i totally fell in love with the khyber rock venue in philly. there were charming rock posters hanging everywhere in the main performance space that held 200 max. the bar was separate but had that same narrow corridor feeling to mercury lounge. the performance space was grungy and dark -- creating this very cozy atmosphere that was probably most held by venues like luxx or brownies in new york(r.i.p. to both those). the bands we played with were fun indie bands as well. some from the neighboring suburbs of philly that i grew up in, it was really nice to see that the quality of music doesn't suffer. i never thought that philly had an "indie scene," but i was proven wrong by what i saw last night. there were tons of indie-loving kids coming out to support the bands tonight. i even met a 38-year-old father of 4 (with another one on the way) who was out at the show to support his friends band okay paddy (their cd release show). it was just nice to see that everyone was friendly and into music as much as the 20 year old skinny indie rocker from williamsburg. even more so, even. the vibe of the place was intoxicating. there was a dance party going on upstairs. the dop set, which i realized was full of all new songs went over exceptionally well with the crowd, who were making lots of noise after each song. it felt awesome. oh, and one thing i like about the tripwire review (i posted the review below this one), is that i do think dirty on purpose is total makeout music. they just create this warm, fuzzy atmosphere that is quite intoxicating and romantic. it's totally something where you dim the lights or burn candles and lock lips with someone till they're pounding from the friction. the tripwire reviews dirty on purpose & bishop allen @ bowery ballroomLive - Indie Rockers Invade Bowery BallroomThere are some bands that just look like ‘bands.’ They walk into some place and you know you’re not looking at a banker or elementary school teacher. One of the last shows I’d seen at Bowery Ballroom before last night was the Morning After Girls, Singapore Sling and Brian Jonestown Massacre – all bands who look like ‘bands.’ None of them were wearing the white Band Member sticker that Bowery gives out to performers because they really didn’t have to. You knew at first glance that those kids were in ‘bands.’ Last night’s show was a different story. Bishop Allen and Dirty on Purpose were milling about the crowd last night at Bowery and if I hadn’t known any better I never would have known they were the people about to take the stage and deliver one of the most fun/beautiful shows I’d seen in a while. The first time I saw Bishop Allen I stood there with my friend and we just stared up at the stage with huge smiles on our faces. Bishop Allen seems to elicit that response in most people. Charm School, their debut LP, was one of the most, ummm, charming records of 2003. Lead Bishop Justin’s singing is able to sound sad, snarky, cheerful and forceful from moment to moment, Christian’s guitar lines bounce along with C.O.’s bass, and the four of them on stage look like they could be playing to a cafeteria full of 10 year olds just as easily as they played to an ever-growing indie crowd at Bowery. Dirty on Purpose. Where to begin? Every time I see this band I love them a little bit more. Listening to their EP Sleep Late for a Better Tomorrow on my computer at work, turning the volume up a few clicks every time “Mind Blindness” comes on (which you can listen to with some other tracks at the band’s MySpace page), I forget the power the band has live. Opening with the epic, swirling “Monument,” and playing through new songs and tracks off the EP, DoP create a blanket of sound so warm and inviting, swirling and expansive, you forget you’re in the same Bowery Ballroom you started in. You can check out their transportive musical powers over at their site where they’re offering a download of a recent show in Boston. If you’re in Philly tonight, swing by the Khyber and check these kids out and be transported to Dirty on Purpose land. -Reported by Christen Thomas on 10/21/2005 Labels: dirty on purpose
dirty on purpose newsthanks to everyone who showed up at the dirty on purpose show last night at bowery. it's so awesome. i think that was the biggest crowd they ever played to. all the bands were great -- bishop allen (a constant fave) and mates of state really blew me away. i love the new bishop allen songs. i want the record now!! ok so by now you probably know that dirty on purpose is playing with wolf parade at nyu. advance tickets are for nyu students. tickets are open to the public on the day of the show. $6 for students. $8 for public. there's an opening act called the honey brothers... but you may know them because adrian grenier (of entourage fame) is in the band. this is particularly interesting to me because my first jinners post ever was about seeing adrian grenier play with the honey brothers. you can also now download the entire dirty on purpose set from their boston NEMO show. click here.Labels: dirty on purpose
i think i violate all these rules for blog design [prefixblog -- thanks dave] i think i'll start by fixing the photo... maybe bio later. but i mean, who cares?
boar... grossmy dear friend jenna was the "dining companion" who made the corpse bride comment in this article. she so witty. ew, i cannot imagine eating boar!! and why is it surprising that it tastes like meat? i don't get it.
lorem ipsum dolor sit ametwhat does it mean? it doesn't mean anything. it's essentially a few latin phrases (some fragmented) that were pulled from an old passage in cicero's de finibus bonorum et malorum. the nonsensical phrase is often used by typographers (and in modern times website coders) as filler text. the original whole phrase translates to something quite romantic: there is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it, and wants to have it, simply because it is pain.this reminds me of my favorite catullus poem... my translation of it: i hate and i love. perhaps you ask me how this is so? i do not know. i only feel it, and i am tortured.ok enough of my nerdy side. see you at the show tonight!
i hope to see y'all at the following shows this week... as you know, this is my life right now. allmusicguide has added music videos to the mix of random and rarely updated information on their site. even though the site is totally r&r, it is pretty damn useful as i have to look up information on it every single day... if not hourly. i'm revisiting the shins this week. the mood is set. i went to see a filter screening of shopgirl last night with joe and mary. i expected the worst. i didn't get the worst, but i got uncomfortable watching the film. it was better than i expected, but unpleasant to watch. i mean... after steve martin and claire danes first sleep together, and he asks, 'can i make a speech?' -- i felt my heart skip a beat. i knew what he was going to say, but i was surprised at her answer. us women can be so friggin dull in desperation, eh? jason schwartzman's character was cutely awkward and good for comic relief, but guys like that don't exist, do they? ha.
over the weekend...jo's birthday party was fun times. i don't think i've ever had that much fun at black and white before. it was packed to the gills in there, and everyone was giving jo jo dancer some much deserved love. we ended up going to hang out at sara and john's apartment afterwards, and stayed up until 7 in the morning. i caught a cab back to the 'burg, and only a few hours of sleep before i had to get up again to prepare for my bitch and stitch. i made pesto pasta. jenna made the most amazing brownies. we played apples to apples. knitted. bitched. watched chapelle show. it was awesome. the next day i went to annie's going away party. she's going on tour with au revoir simone, and will be gone for 2 months. it was fun. i played a little trivial pursuit and felt pretty dumb. ha. photos from jo's birthday party. none of the random shots really make sense to me. i think i was drunk.

congrats to brooklyn vegan on his village voice award, though i'm not sure you want to avoid the shows he rallies. i'm sure the village voice is right there beside him. lately i've been floating around, very detached from the world around me. new york has been crying non-stop for about a week now, and it's starting to get on my nerves. soggy pants and bleak thoughts pervade. it's strange, but the thought of eating the fried pickles i had in boston at lizard lounge makes me happy. those were some damn fine pickles. why aren't there any in new york? or are there? fill me in, please. i've been confining myself indoors, watching csi marathons, courtesy of netflix. i blame the rainy weather, but then again, my nerdy side triumphs. i've started wearing my glasses so that the world isn't so blurry, and i'm rejoicing in jacket season. it's also knitting season, and i'm having my first fall get-together this saturday at my place of my best ladyfriends. i actually ran into someone yesterday who didn't know what a "bitch and stitch" was. what?? this will be fun. food, alcohol, yarn, movies and girltalk. i told my roommate marcel that he could stick around (i mean, he does live there) but he may be overwhelmed by the amount of estrogen in the room.
oh fuck it, i'm gonna have a partylast week i went to see my beloved nada surf at bowery ballroom. it was killer. there aren't many bands around today who can make me swoon so much, but nada surf is one of them. they pulled out all the hits, practically alternating new and old songs all night. my friends and i were singing along during the entire show. we were gawking at the huge mirrors placed behind drummer ira elliot, which perfect reflected his wacky large personality. we marveled at how forcefully bassist daniel lorca thrusted his dreads around. we melted at the sound of matthew caws' perfect voice. but we were really sure how we felt about harvey dangers backup vocal appearances.... but i still loved every minute of the show, with the exception of that french song that daniel sings. too much pretension there. seeing nada surf live really made the new album come alive to me. i was singing along to every song!! say hi to your mom opened the show with an aggressive set full of old and mostly new songs. i like eric's energy on stage, which leads the entire band to really rock out on stage. the band is a good match with nada surf's sentimentality. i caught a little bit of the opening act, the gravel pit, and they were good -- though the sound of their music was certainly dated... similar to harvey danger era, funny enough. the lead singer has this incredibly melodic voice, but all the songs seemed like they stepped out of 90s pop rock. i listened to the lead singer's solo album (jedediah parish), which is way quirkier... still not sure if i like it.
what does jesus say to you? thanks cara...
