my presidential weekend of shows

i'm sorry to all of you who missed the dirty on purpose show at northsix last friday night. it was one of those nights to be remembered. brooklyn rock and roll history. there was even a busload of english school kids -- 16 years old -- to see dop headline brooklyn. their teacher had brought signed permission slips (how cute!?). they were all so excited, and so were we.

the air was already magical. i mean with oakley hall, hopewell and jaymay on the bill, it was just one of those amazing nights -- the kind that you'll look back on and think, "whoa, i'm so happy i was there to see brooklyn's finest emerging acts show everyone what they got." several people came up to me and said they were just blown away. i was too. it was the best dirty on purpose show to date, and it was special to have so many supporters in the room showing their love!

the band played many songs from their upcoming full length album, and it was heavy shoegaze heaven with new songs like "no radio," "kill our city," "always looking," "your summer dress" and "lake effect." they also played some hits from the sleep late for a better tomorrow ep like "mind blindness" and "spider eyes."

oakley hall were really great -- that indie rugged country rock with beautiful melodies. pretty wonderful. we heard them rehearsing downstairs before their set, and then they rocked it onstage. if you haven't checked this band out, and you're going to see the yeah yeah yeahs on saturday at bowery ballroom -- go early and witness their wonderfulness. my favorite song is "lazy susan." there's such a classic feel to it, like it was written in the 70s an amped up for contemporary audiences.

hopewell also gave a stunning and energetic performance with their psychedelic jam rock. plus, they seem to be really nice, humble guys, which maybe isn't important to some people, but is imperative to me.

i was simply, achingly mesmerized by jaymay. she sings some backup vocals on the upcoming dirty on purpose album, and i've been a fan of hers ever since. there's this sweet vulnerability to her music that is undeniably blissful to the senses. i was super excited and giddy when she dedicated her first song, "gray or blue," to me. and even more wowed by her entire set -- especially when she broke out the a capella trumpet in one of her songs. it's amazing to see someone mimic the sound of a trumpet so naturally. i loved it!

at the knife skills show at mercury lounge on monday, the band's set was cut off before they could play their killer song, "doctor doctor." that was a bummer. those wolfmother people must be crazy because they wouldn't let the band go on past a certain time. i don't see what the rush was... but that's how the industry works. you have big wigs from interscope buying up all the tickets, and then they pressure the venue and the sound guy to keep everything on schedule so that all the industry-ers won't end up going to bed too late on a monday night.

the black lips left me blue -- so much so that i left the main room after just one song. i heard the lead singer whipped out his dick and peed in his mouth at the finale. then he spewed it on the audience. unfortunately, the music was as immature as his antics, and so the set suffered in my eyes -- though i'm sure there were lots of people who were into it for the sheer "shock" value of it all. the vice people seemed pretty excited about them, but let me tell ya, they ain't no bloc party or the streets.

i was pretty excited to see wolfmother and see what all the hype was about, but you know -- it's hard to please me. not only do i look for that special oomph, i also look for originality. and while wolfmother had the showmanship and huzzah, they lacked an original sound. in fact, they sounded like the bizarre baby of jack white and ozzy osbourne. someone told me that they were actually asked in an interview if jack white wrote their songs for them. ouch. all in all though, the crowd full of mostly industry types lurrrved their aussie metal sass.

knife skills @ mercury lounge on feb. 20

knife skills will be playing with wolfmother and the black lips at mercury lounge tomorrow night. it's going to be a crazy night for sure. knife skills has one of the fiercest, hard-hitting live shows hands-down. you've got to experience their madness so make sure you come early to check them out. they'll be touring down to sxsw in a couple of weeks. check out their myspace page for tour dates. hot stuff coming ahead.

vice has been promoting the black lips lately, and i checked out their video the other day on the addvice of christen -- looks weird and crazy.

wolfmother is the black sabbath of australia. and you know i like the australians. every aussie i've met have been amazingly nice and gracious. i wonder what they will be like live?

jennarator is back!

my friend jenna from jennarator is immensely crafty, and she just opened up her own online store! her tampurses are so cute -- i got one for my christmas/birthday from the she-crafter herself, and i never leave home without it. check out her stuff here.

meet jf robitaille

hey peeps, yesterday i got to see jf robitaille perform two songs in the ascap office. it was pretty sweet stuff. i think his songwriting is really wonderful -- the lyrics are just really smart, honest and warm. check out music on his myspace page -- i love "bury every dream" and "the blood in my body." he's from montreal but just moved to new york five months ago. he's collaborated with the dears a bunch and has a big support base of canadian musicians behind him. his EP drops april 11, produced by howard bilerman (arcade fire, the dears, godspeed you black emperor) and brian paulson (beck and wilco). you can see him at joe's pub next thursday, feb. 23! this will probably be your last chance for a while because he's going on tour with julie doiron. but then again, he'll be doing a residency at pianos in april. that seems so far away. on a completely unrelated note, don't you love people with french last names? oui oui.

winter wonderland

i had fun in the blizzard this past weekend. the white wonderland illuminated my spirits.... we started the weekend off in philly, as dirty on purpose stepped on to the khyber stage for the second time. however, this time around, there was no window to be broken. the khyber had replaced the broken window (accidentally smashed by doug last time around) and also built a wall in front of the windows. smart move.

it was awesome because we had dtl, jersey dan, builder, howerton, jenna and more in the house to support the team. i hung out a little bit with jim from phillyist, and discovered that the khyber had a band room. the khyber has a very mercury lounge feel to it. narrow bar area with a similarly sized show room. the difference is that the khyber has an upstairs bar that always has a party going on every night. parties like "destroy your liver" on sundays -- all you can drink for $10 -- or "In My Pants" -- described as "pussy footing music." hmmm.... but let's not forget the indie rock party, "no tan lines." i love it! the band also played with some other cool bands -- audible who are on polyvinyl -- sweet melodies and happiness all around. relay were also pretty cool, also melodic indie rock.

the next night we rolled into new haven, amidst small flurries. the last time we played new haven, we played at BAR, which provided us with free pizza and beer all night. we were sad to find that BAR had a terrible fire destroy the upstairs, and subsequently closed down. however cafe nine was pretty cool. the stage was small and the setup of the bar was very similar to magnetic field in cobble hill/carroll gardens over here in brooklyn. oh and cafe nine happened to have a neon budweiser guitar on the wall. pretty sweet (see below).

they played with a great new haven band called diamond j and the rough. i had listened to the music on myspace before the show and really liked what i heard. the band is even better live. total bright alt-country. they were so friendly to boot, and even invited us to crash at their house -- which we took them up on after seeing how much it was snowing. diamond j said, "first we have to go to a birthday party." so we drove in the snow to a birthday party -- which turned out to be a birthday party for jason -- the guy in mates of state. so much fun! ran into the bishop allen kids there, and later a bunch of us explored kitchen karaoke. afterwards, we headed back to diamond j's house. their house was huge and cheaper than my apartment in new york, and the best part was that it was right by the ocean. look out and there was just water. of course, hard to appreciate as much with 2 feet of snow below, but still pretty breathtaking. what am i doing living in new york when there are places like this to be had? at their house, we watched dvds featuring the band, david cross, the aristocrats... and made breakfast and lunch -- fun!

even still, i missed new york and i missed mikers, so we all returned home the next day, despite snow still falling down. the best part about coming home is sleeping in my own bed. le sigh!

check out more terrible, blurry photos on my flickr page.

please be safe

I know I've been talking a lot about safety lately, but my roommates just got mugged at gunpoint in my neighborhood. I just wanted to warn people to take the main roads like Metropolitan. They got mugged by 13 year old kids on North 7th Street at around 8 p.m. A cop car actually passed by them shortly after the incident, and they tried to flag it down -- but the car didn't stop. Please be careful, and walk down busy streets. And please do remember to notify the cops because apparently there have been a few other incidents of muggings on North 7th recently. If they know it is happening a lot, they will be more likely to patrol those areas or do more to make those streets safer. Here is a no nonsense self defense site mikers sent me.

violently sick

last night i almost passed out while i was walking home. my head was spinning, and i felt sort of loopy. i got up the stairs to my apartment. then i got caught up on the phone over stuff which made my head ache more.

and then i proceeded to throw up everything i had eaten that day. not too much - popcorn and a turkey sandwich. yuck.

i tried lying down again. another phone call.

i ran to the bathroom and threw up again. i know, gross.

at this point, i knew i was done for the evening and i passed out, listening to the soothing sounds of belle and sebastian's the life pursuit. i really love that album now. it has the ability to send my worries on their way. the life pursuit = happiness.

i'm beginning to get really scared to walk around in my own neighborhood

i've always thought of my neighborhood as pretty safe -- mostly because in my area, i really feel a mafia presence. of course, it's not safe -- it's all this illusion in my head so that i feel safe. i don't understand why i've been hearing more incidences lately of people being attacked on relatively well-populated streets lately and earlier in the evening -- but it really is starting to freak me the fuck out. i post this cautionary tale for all of you, and for me.

From Byron:
i'm not sure who i've told this, but i was attacked in greenpoint on new years day to a much lesser degree than this person. (please see fwd below). a friend and i were walking down manhattan avenue at about 8PM. 2 large men came up to me and belted me full force in the face with a full large mcdonalds coke. the men (who i couldn't really see b.c my glasses were covered ) walked about 5-10 steps away and turned back and glared, as if wanting to start something. we of course continued on silently and helplessly as there is obviously no way that i at 140 pounds could hold my own against 2 huge guys. so yeah. be careful in greenpoint. that was on a relatively crowded street.

hey guys, remember to be safe and aware at all times, you never know. please forward to your friends in the area, especially the ladies.

Subject: attacked in Greenpoint

Hi Everyone-

I don't mean to freak you out, but I had a bad experience Saturday night which I think is very important to share. I was attacked at 9 p.m. on Guernsey St. between Norman and Nassau, almost to Nassau. That 1/2 of the block is admittedly rather dark and desolate, but I usually only avoided it after 11 p.m. Well, it turns out things can happen at any time. A black man in baggy blue jeans and a big, black puffy coat--hood on--came around the
left corner to my side of the sidewalk (I was on the "south" side). I didn't think much of it, but as soon as he passed by me, he turned and grabbed me in a very tight arm lock from my side/behind. I immediately began screaming with all my might and fought him off to the best of my ability (thank god for my 2+ years of karate training). Still, he was stronger than me, and it was all happening too quickly for me to think of the best technique to use. And, as i said, he was behind me.

But i kept screaming, "Help!, Get the fuck off me! (as i was told later by a witness), and Help, someone!" repeatedly, fighting him off the whole while. We ended up on the ground; i'm not sure if he threw me down or if we just fell. I was primarily on my left side, he was on top of me, and my small handbag was in my right hand just in front of his face. I said, "what do you want?" (obviously not the handbag), and at this point he brought something out of his pocket that *looked* like a gun. I'm still not 100% sure it was a gun, but he clicked it and it sounded either like an empty gun or a fake gun. He said, "be quiet." Naturally, i ignored him.

Apparently, my screaming worked, as a man in a building diagonally across the street came out onto his porch, saw what was happening, and yelled at the guy, "Get the fuck off her . . . I'm calling the cops!" His wife was at that time dialing 911. At about the same time, 2 people in the warehouse-y building (which has apartments) across the way stuck their heads out their respective windows and also started yelling. The attacker got scared and ran off. He never reached for my purse. Unfortunately, i never got a good look at his face. He was about 5'10".

I'm really, really lucky that I got out of it with only a jammed thumb and a sore neck (mental torment aside, of course). And if anything good can come of it, it's a reminder to all of us to be hyper aware at all times. Avoid areas like this one, and if you do live in the area, DO NOT cut through the tennis courts after dark. Had I actually made it to Nassau and turned right, headed towards the tennis courts, things may have turned out much differently. NO ONE lives right there.

Do not take short cuts. Take the most-populated route whenever you can. If you hear someone screaming, please don't ignore it. My neighbors saved me from a really bad situation--they may have even saved my life.

Look out for each other. We can never be too careful, apparently.
And please, don't hesitate to send this e-mail to everyone and anyone you know. Unfortunately, it takes something like this for people to remember that, No, we aren't always safe. Things can happen anywhere, anytime. I've lived in this neighborhood for 7
years, and I've traveled pretty extensively, sometimes by myself. This is the first time anything like this has ever happened to me, and it happened a block from my own home on a street i walk down very regularly. At 9 p.m., not 3 in the morning.

And the screaming, struggling, fighting--maybe i even kicked the guy--all seemed to work. I did the best I could, but I also was very, very lucky. And I didn't let myself get scared. I was inwardly terrified, of course, but I was concentrating on just trying to get the F away and get him off of me.

So please, get the word out. I don't want attention from this all--i just want for everyone to remember to be safe.

Take care, everyone,
maura

sugar high social: the chocolate bar

thanks to the good heart of one dtl, my sugar high social sugar daddy, i was able to attend treats club last night, free of charge! if any of you see him on the streets, give him a chocolate kiss on the cheek... he's a good egg.

so it was my pick for a sugar crime scene, and i chose the chocolate bar. let me tell you folks, you will not be let down by the chocolate bar. the girls who worked there last night were super understanding about our sugar high crowd cramming up their joint. it also took us a long time to decide on what to get. but once we did, we had a total chocolate feast! dtl's favorite was the banana rum truffle, and my favorite was definitely the crushed oreo cookies in white chocolate. yummmmmmmmmers! i think it was a resounding "oh no" to the nougat caramel bar. it looked pretty but was a bit too much to handle, not even the prez could vacuum it into his stomach! check out more photos in my flickr gallery!

motherfucker documentary

so there's a motherfucker documentary coming out.... i have personally never been to motherfucker, but i know that it's a pretty big glam scene. i actually don't think i would hold up style-wise to all the fashionistas and personalities that show up to the motherfucker parties... but i really think that they've shaped new york night life a bit. here's what the press release says...

The producers of New York's premiere Rock and Roll free for all, Motherfucker are pleased to announce the beginning of a new chapter for the now-legendary party. Starting this month, filming will begin for a feature length documentary film of Motherfucker that will directed by New York-based filmmaker and music video director David Casey. The project, simply titled Motherfucker, will be a definitive encapsulation of all things Motherfucker-music, sex, politics, dancing, fashion and of course, the artists, musicians, freaks and rebels who have made it New York City's most beautiful bastard child since 2000.

While there's always been wild stories circulating about what goes down at producers Michael T, Justine D, Johnny T and Georgie Seville's Motherfucker bashes, even if you've experienced the rush that is Motherfucker firsthand, you've only been getting half the story.

Motherfucker will take viewers into the belly of the beast through exclusive interviews with the party's promoters and guests as well as the legendary musicians, journalists and celebrities who have passed through its jam packed doors. “We need to talk to everyone,” says Casey. “They've all got something to say.”

In the vein of Paris Is Burning, Mayor Of The Sunset Strip and RIZE, Motherfucker will be a document of not only cultural moment, but of the people who have shaped it. "When considering the prospect of telling the story of modern day New York's underground music and arts scene, Motherfucker is the only thing that made sense to me,” says Casey. “I tried to focus on the many other elements that New York's recent successes stemmed from, but found that the Motherfucker crew collectively represent something more sincere, open and risk-taking. They're heroes of the nightlife and they need to be remembered.”

Prior to this reveling in all that glitters and glows, Casey worked on commercial film projects for clients such as MTV, ESPN, the Sterling Group and Deutsch Marketing. In recent years, Casey has also had the privilege of working with the independent film studio Sasson Pictures as an editor and soundtrack curator. Through his various connections in the music industry, the longtime downtown mover and shaker has worked with marquee independent rock groups such as The Walkmen, Yo La Tengo and Interpol.

With plans for an accompanying soundtrack and film score in the works, it's only a matter of time before the gospel of Motherfucker is spread far and wide. And to help fan those flames, Casey and his production company, Great American Desert, will be organizing and producing a national Motherfucker tour that will kick off in late 2006 and end at the 2007 South By Southwest Music Conference. The Motherfucker tour, which will visit over 50 cities and college campuses across the country, will feature screenings of the film along with appearances by the Motherfuckers themselves and live performances and DJ sets from the artists who have graced its stage over the years.

In the true spirit of the party's culture clashes, Motherfucker seeks to reach the young creatives in each community it visits and have them join in on the fun. Count on writers, musicians, filmmakers, photographers, bloggers, students, and others to all get involved.

Like any generational story, Motherfucker will be a mix of youth, politics, sex and rock and roll - all set to the ballet that is MOTHERFUCKER. Our generation needs to know that something special is happening and after seeing Motherfucker, no one will miss out-or ever forget it.

after hearing the diplo remix, i am very pleased. i liked both but i'm glad the original is slower. it really lets the song breathe.

the lilys @ magnetic field

so i went to see the lilys at magnetic field, but i got there a little late. i made grape jello shots with gin and vodka, and got a little drunk before the show with mike and jenna. we took the b61 bus from bedford avenue in wburg to atlantic avenue in cobble hill/carroll gardens. it wasn't that bad of a bus ride actually... when i got to the venue, they were about 3 songs into their set, but skippy assured me that kurt would play for an hour. they played songs, old and new, but it was sort of hard to watch the show from the back of the room. damn those pillars! even so, the lilys were beautiful, and the new numbers were killer. for some reason, they make me want to swish around and smile like a fool in love.

i haven't been taking photos at shows lately because i'm trying to change my show going experience from behind the lens to in front of the ears... if that makes any sort of sense. this was a decision i made before that last ohmyrockness newsletter, where they talked about how annoying it is to be at an indie rock show with a bunch of bloggerazzi in the front snapping photos. taking photos at a show is both engaging for the person snapping away, but it truly is different to just stand still at a show and let the music slowly soak in. that experience really makes the music the centerpiece of a show. agree? disagree?

In case you missed today's programming announcement, the station is moving towards a listener-supported model because we have not been able to make enough money through advertising to cover the massive bandwidth bills and royalty fees that have to be paid every month. We have been very fortunate to have the initial funding from our angel investors, but now we are turning to our listeners for help to keep the future of rock and roll on the air.

broke and picky

i'm broke these days as you probably know if you read this blog. so i have gotten pickier about what shows i go to. why? because stepping out your front door pretty much guarantees at least $20 less in your wallet. however, there is one show this weekend that i'm particularly excited about attending...

the lilys are playing this saturday at magnetic field!

the flavorpill review reads:
Kurt Heasley, the mercurial mastermind behind the ever-shifting Lilys lineup, has settled on yet another style — weaving gossamer melodies through shimmering, noisy, power-pop anthems. See 'em now, before he switches it up again.

check out their music on myspace. i added "with candy" to my myspace profile. i know, so cheesy, but who cares?
