there is so much to catch up on!

thanks to everyone who came out to the ascap/deli magazine show last week at the annex. all of the bands brought their own flavor to the night, and it was quite delectable... ra ra riot had the industry buzzing the next day with their arcade fire chamber pop. they were the second band of the night, but the crowd cheered for an encore. i think they will be signed soon. it was nice to see sam champion rock out their new songs as well. they've matured much over the years! and i can't wait to hear the new record!! chin chin i really liked because they aren't afraid to boogie. speaking of boogie, i heard endless boogie was amazing, and i'm glad they joined the party. it was definitely a night of friends gathering to support each other. special thanks to jeremy, paolo and xiaoting!

the big sleep record release party for their debut album, son of the tiger, on french kiss records, at mercury lounge was mind-blowing. gave me chills. i was dancing dancing dancing! with earplugs 'cause the awesomeness is so loud and proud! also, i love when bands pick out the music playing in the club right before their set. a lot of amazing aaliyah jams put me in the exact hypnotic mood i needed to be in for the onslaught that was the big sleep. steve from french kiss told me it was his suggestion, and i gave him an automatic hi-five for that excellent idea. reba of sugar high social was also there celebrating her birthday! dtl bought like two dozen cupcakes from sugar sweet sunshine, and i had one for dinner and dessert. YUMMY. it was especially heartfelt for me because i hadn't been to mercury lounge in a while so it felt like a reunion with all my buds. oh how i have missed y'all.

doug and annie were finally wedded in matrimonial bliss. their wedding was gorgeous, held in greenpoint's mcgorlick park. annie was stunning, and i started to cry when doug was reading his vows. just like they do in the movies! joe and rod played dueling acoustic guitars as the bride and groom walked down the aisle. the reception was at princess manor, a few blocks away. also props to total soul, the motown band that played at the reception. they were awesome, especially when they got all the awkward white people to groove to nelly's "hot in herre." that was classic. towards the end of the night, doug and annie played with the band, and annie ended up with a bloody lip from the microphone. punk rock! another one of my favorite parts was when i got to go shopping with mike for a suit and tie. i love me some suit and tie! we found a christian dior grey herringbone suit for $25 at beacon's closet.

September 11th, Five Years Later

Five years ago, on this very morning, I woke up like I do every work day, put on my headphones and went to work. As I crossed the street to the subway station, I noticed a few people standing in the street staring at a big cloud of smoke in the western sky. I thought a building in Brooklyn was on fire, and just kept going. Only when I got to the office, did I realize something far more terrible had happened. At the time I was interning at Entertainment Weekly, and before I even sat down at my cube, my coworker asked, "Did you hear a plane crashed into the World Trade Center?" I was stunned. I didn't even comprehend what she was telling me.

We went to our editor-in-chief's office and talked about what to do. Everyone was on edge, and we went to an office that had a TV in it. Shortly after we tuned in, the first tower fell. I started crying. Then the second tower fell. Everyone started crying. Our editor sent us home. A few of us were from the Greenpoint/Brooklyn area, and we left work together, making our way towards the 59th Street Bridge. We walked in shock with thousands of others, our gaze fixated on the hazy downtown horizon.

My roommates and I watched the news in disbelief. I didn't think the world would be the same again, and of course it wasn't. If you think about it, everything changed that day, and certainly not for the better. While at first everyone wondered if the entertainment industry would remain relevant when you have the weight of thousands of dead bodies hanging over your thoughts, it is easy to see that the crisis pushed us towards escapist fantasies. Television shows that centered around crime like CSI and 24 flourished because we like to see the bad guys get caught, wishing reality would parallel the fiction. To escape reality, we actually further embraced reality tv shows that were cartoon versions of real life like Flavor of Love or Project Runway. Celebrity obsession is at an all-time high, now even putting the heat on star babies -- check out the cover of Vanity Fair, though I'm sure you already know who's featured.

Where will the next five years take us?
