halloween costumes if you are like me and don't yet have a halloween costume, turn to this link that jeff sent to me for inspiration... i think when i was younger i had some kind of scary princess costume. i chased my brother around the house with it and terrorized him. oh yes, i'm a lovely older sister, i am.
new slang: 'nanasi forgot to mention that my current new favorite slang is 'nanas. this is short for "bananas." so instead of saying, "lio's crashin' in cmj party is gonna be bananas," try saying, "lio's crashin' in cmj party is gonna be 'nanas!"
dirty on purpose @ cmj 2006feel free to pass or post the evite below created by my awesome OTM assistant eric! Labels: dirty on purpose
show recap: beck & friends @ angel orensanzwatching beck last night at the angel orensanz center, a jewish synagogue in the lower east side of new york, was sort of like watching the second half of band practice. the set was loose and open to audience requests with songs fading in and out. there's something special about seeing beck so relaxed in an intimate setting, although for such a steep ticket price, i may have expected a little bit more "thrill" for my buck. luckily, i didn't have to shell out money for this show so it didn't bother me too much, BUT i wondered if others who had paid the $55 plus fees for the show were slightly disappointed. just glancing around the hushed and attentive room with many a fan clenching their fists to their chin with smiley adoration during the show indicated that everyone was just happy to be there seeing and hearing beck, no matter what. i know i was. we packed in, sitting on rickety and uncomfortable wooden chairs. those standing in the balcony had the best view of the show, which ranged from melancholy ("everybody's gotta learn sometimes") to upbeat ("where it's at" -- hello, casio). he ended his encore with "nausea," which is definitely one of my favorite tracks from his new album, the information. my other favorite from the album is "think i'm in love" because it's such a geeky love kind of song. plus it pretty much references david cassidy's "i think i love you so what am i so afraid of?" partridge family vibe. the crowd pleasers were definitely the songs where beck and his band shifted the show to a dining table stage left, where his band started clinking spoons to glasses of water on the table. it was a glass clinking, egg shaker, cowbell jam session. is there a name for this in music? i forget... the opening act, death vessel, had my blurry vision wondering whether or not he was a male or female. his voice was quite angelic, perfect for the religious decor around him, soaring over his acoustic guitar. his music was just alright and most of the songs sounded the same. but his voice was quite intriguing.
the #1 single in the uk when i was born was... i was reading the music slut, and couldn't resist seeing what was the #1 uk single on the day i was born... Boney M's "Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord," which is predictably a christmas song since i was born on december 23. according to all music guide, this song is the fifth best selling single in uk history. wha?? this was probably written pre-gnarls barkley. a part of me kind of wishes it was "daddy cool," which i remember anna spinning when she guest-deejayed at WBAR. boney m was one of those 70s phenoms, kind of like the baha men ("who let the dogs out") and bobby mcferrin ("don't worry be happy"), except it's west indian disco. find your #1 uk birthday song here.
beck @ angel orensanz this sundayi was reading on brooklyn vegan all the mass chaos going on with ticketweb in regards to the beck show at angel orensanz this sunday, and it sounds like ticketweb really needs to rethink its system. buying tickets to a show shouldn't be so stressful. every year, i feel like it gets tougher and more stressful to go to shows. that said, i am pretty excited to go to the show. i haven't seen beck since the odelay tour. that was like 10 billion years ago. special thanks to my darling mikers for taking me to the show. woot woot! on a different note, katy emailed me yesterday freaking out about the possible pavement reunion rumor for coachella. do you think malkmus got jealous of mark ibold playing in sonic youth? i know i would be.
recapping last week...so i went to go see silversun pickups last week on wednesday at mercury lounge because I became obsessed with them ever since joe from dop played me their ep a while back. plus, i'm digging their new record, carnavas, and had to see them in one of my fave nyc venues. sspu played to a packed house on a rainy night, but they pulled through like pros, despite the fact that they were completely exhausted from non-stop traveling. i love brian aubert's semi-sadistic growl. it frightens me... but in a good way. friday was full of friendly goodness... first, the wonderful and amazing jo divestar had a fantastic birthday dinner at friend house (3rd avenue between 12th and 13th). this place had chinese, japanese and thai food. the lychee sake is amazing. so is the mango sake. there were too many food choices on the menu, it took us a while to decide what to eat. not a bad thing, in my opinion... i've been missing hanging out with jo. lately it feels like i don't have enough lady friends. apparently, they're all fleeing the city. first jo goes back to long island. then juliet goes to south korea. then jenna went to a cheese farm -- and now she's in greece learning how to make olive oil. they have all found peace outside of new york. i wonder if i will have to move out of the city to find the inner peace i am seeking. well, that won't happen for a while! no need to panic. speaking of jenna, mike and i also went to say goodbye to jenna that night. we went up to some bar called Tonic East, which is officially the worst bar in new york city. don't ever go there. they have like 10 huge flat screen tvs with various sports games and lots of lame people (sorry). and their nachos smell like bad breath. yuck. i will miss jenna, but she looks so healthy and happy, how can i knock her decision to leave the city? the country farm air does this pennsyltuckian good. saturday was the one year anniversary party for sugar high social. it was an elegant potluck. we all dressed up in some fancy gear (the guys wore suits!) and ate way too much. sarah ellis made one of the best treats of the evening, monkeybread. i couldn't stop eating that thing. i made another boob cake, which was more of a visual experience than a tasting experience. jason's peach cobbler was freaking awesome. mike made what we are dubbing "turtle soup." it's basically chocolate pudding with fudge brownie bites and other goodies dumped in. i woke up the next morning with the worst stomach ache ever. then we spent a really nice day in boerum hill, which is only a G train ride away. mike and i basically hung out with my new OTM assistant, eric, and his wife allison all day. it was kind of nice just sitting around talking. my schedule lately has been fucking crazy, and i apologize to all my friends and family who i haven't had much time to talk to. maybe things will slow down a little once cmj is over and i've sent the boys on the road. some exciting news i have is that mike and i are going to iceland to see the sugarcubes reunion with bjork! i can't believe it. i'll be covering the event for filter -- my second assignment! it will be nice to have a couple days to see the sights too. it will be my second international trip ever!
ascap @ cmj 2006wow, look me up at one of these hot cmj ascap events! how will i ever survive this series of events? feel free to repost this evite or email it around. spread the word!
sugar high social one year anniversaryi almost can't believe it's been a whole freaking year since DTL, danny, sonya and i started Sugar High Social. the group has grown to like 10 people now, and the gorging has grown enormous. i'm waiting for more photos from DTL and others, but i thought I would share this cute group shot we took on Saturday to commemorate our one year anniversary. other bloggery items to come including, silversun pickups review at mercury lounge (so late, but still good). xoxo jinners
2007 plug awardsthe 2007 plug awards will take place february 10, 2007, at irving plaza and will spotlight the indie artists of 2006. with independent music growing bigger and bigger each year, i think it gets tougher and tougher to nominate the true "indie" artists and music industry professionals who adhere and support the indie way. (wow, i think that's the most i've ever said "indie" in one paragraph). oh and it's produced by the wonderful peeps over at jelly nyc. sweetness. anyways, we all know which albums were stand out this year -- i know i have several favorites from 2006 -- though not too many favorites. i'm gonna take this moment for a shameless plug: to ask everyone who enjoyed dirty on purpose's full length, hallelujah sirens, to vote for it for the 2007 plug awards. it's one of those albums that just wraps around you as you listen to it more and more. once you're hooked, you're hooked. check out the songs on DOP's myspace page...you can start putting in your thoughts for nominees, by visiting the plug awards site: http://www.plugawards.com/award_nominees.php. basement bhangra @ SOBsrecently, i've been finding myself shaking my hips and dancing like i used to when i was a wee girl in college. yes, it's true. in college, i was the biggest fag hag, and had many of my first experiences in the presence of drag queens and gay boyfriends. my friend brian introduced me to the twisted world of john waters by making me watch pink flamingos. i don't think my jaw could have dropped any further than it did when first watching that divine movie. i also laughed it up watching showgirls with a bunch of drag queens in the back of the gay bookstore, a different light, in the west village. i have danced at the roxy while gawking at gay weathermen -- you know who they are. i have been mistaken many times for margaret cho. many many times. not so much anymore... but i digress. my friend mikey used to drag me to SALGA parties in college. SALGA is short for South Asian Lesbian and Gay Assocation. Since I wasn't South Asian nor Lesbian, I would always wonder why I went to those parties... but the music was always great. They played the pop hits, of course, but they mixed in bhangra, which is like indian hip-hop, super infectious! i had the chance to revisit my college days by going to basement bhangra, a party that has been going on at SOBs for a while now by DJ Rekha. When I got there, there were cameras everywhere -- and I am super camera-shy. I learned later that they were from CNN -- following DJ Rekha around for a couple weeks. Of course, the reporter came up to me and asked if she could interview me, and I turned her down. I really hate being on camera. I am more comfortable behind-the-scenes. Beside, I am just someone who enjoys bhangra music -- not an expert or anything and it was my first time at the party. The cool thing about this party is that at 11pm, DJ Rekha takes control and broadcasts her set around the world via XM. So awesome. They have free dance lessons at 9pm and free mojitos from 7-8pm. It's the first thursday of every month, so the next one is actually during CMJ -- nov. 2. For more information on the party, click here. special thanks to mark davenport for list action!
woxy returns to the air today!as of 10:10 am today, woxy.com resumed programming, and i couldn't be happier! this return sort of restores my faith in the good in the world. this station really had its ear to the ground, and the people over there are such pure spirits. YAY! click over to woxy.com to get more details on the return, and listen to their stream -- free once again!
