northsix's last show ever is tonight

not sure how long all y'all have been rockin' it at northsix over the years (remember when it first opened up in 2001?), but i have experienced many firsts there, including...

first time i saw fiery furnaces when they were just eleanor and matthew giving each other nasty looks and arguing with each other on stage.

first time i went to a rock venue that had stadium seating like a high school auditorium, ala "smells like teen spirit."

first time i saw british sea power with their stage foiliage.

first time i ever saw deerhoof.

first time i saw locust.

first time i heard "take off your pants" at a stellastarr* show.

first time i saw the mink lungs. what the hell ever happened to them?

first time i ever met a bartender who baked treats for her patrons.

first time i took photos of the oxford collapse at a show. meaning, the first real oxc show that wasn't a house party. now they're on sub pop after all their hard work.

first time dirty on purpose ever played there was for chris newmyers (starter foundation) birthday party -- they played with the thermals.

first time i saw the witnesses and the hong kong. what the hell ever happened to them?

the first (and only) time i saw panthers and les savy fav together. holy shit that was amazing.

anyhoo, the big sleep are playing there tonight -- the last show ever at northsix as northsix -- with radio 4 and freeblood. tomorrow, the venue i guess will turn into the music hall of williamsburg. some people may be irked by the bowery acquisition, but i think it will only mean good things for the scene in this part of brooklyn because bowery presents has done such a good job with shows at mercury lounge, bowery ballroom and webster hall (and other various venues around the city).

writer's unblocked

instead of getting drunk and even more depressed, the other night i sat down at my computer and wrote my first poem since sophomore year in college. some of you know that writing used to be one of my passions (thus the continued, inexplicable existence of this blog), and i'm starting to get back into it more these days -- flexing my creative muscles 'cause they've gotten a little rusty. maybe one day i will have enough guts to post them on the blog.

kaiser chiefs listening party

i went to the kaiser chiefs listening party last night at beauty bar. the band, as well as their friends from franz ferdinand, the cribs and we are scientists were there in full force. there were also boxes and boxes of pop burgers (meat and veggie) so the room smelled of grease as they played the catchy new album, yours truly, angry mob. i kind of wanted to start a dance party, but the room was too crowded!

go to filter's blog to see more photos from the night!

also kaiser chiefs are djing at GBH and Filter's party at Lotus tonight...

a gum connoisseur

lately i have been really interested in gum. more than i ever was before. i've endeavored to chew as many different types of gums as possible. i wish i could say i've been keeping track of which gums i've tasted and what my thoughts were on them -- but i haven't. but i recently tried this trident gum - tropical twist - with xylitol. i wikipedia'd "xylitol" and found out some interesting facts:

it's a sugar substitute popular in Finland and Europe, especially in gums.

smints have xylitol. so do koolerz. so does orbit complete.

there was a korean gum named xylitol.

it is toothfriendly. it prevents tooth decay by replacing dietary sugars. which also makes it ok for people with diabetes.

xylitol chewing gum can help prevent ear infections. it can also help with osteoporosis.

just geeking out. sorry.

ps. i also tried pop rocks gum and it, indeed, does rock. however, i just wish there was more pop.

open your eyelids, child

for much of my life, i grew up with my family telling me that i needed to fix a lot of things about myself before i could be a person worthy of any attention. one of the things they would always tell me was that i needed to get plastic surgery on my eyes to make them look more caucasian and less like the tiny asian slits that they are. my 90 year old grandmother still bugs me about it to this day, but i just try to ignore her and attribute her wackiness to senility.

and yes, it's true, i've considered getting the surgery. in photos, i wish my eyes weren't so tiny -- i feel like it makes me look drunk or completely wasted, even when i'm not. if there were a feature on a camera to make me look more sober (like how some cameras come with slimming features nowadays), i would buy it in a second.

i've often wondered whether or not my life would be brighter with bigger eyes. would more sunlight enter my pupil? would i be able to see more in my peripheral vision? would my eyes be dryer with more air contact? would i look like a bug-eyed freak? who really knows. i think these are the questions that people really wonder but are too afraid to ask for political correctness.

of course, there are many things about me that i would love to change with a couple swift cuts of the knife. but if life were that easy, i'm sure i would be a different person today. my younger sister is nothing like me. she's tough and has quite a powerful punch for such a petite girl. she's outspoken and doesn't let anyone mess with her. i'm gentle. soft spoken. more of an observer than a troublemaker. would i be different if i grew up in the same circumstances as her? maybe i would be mean and snotty. alas, i don't think i'll ever know the answer to these questions. there is no angel to float down and show me what life would be like had i grown up differently, and to be honest, i'm sort of glad there isn't. life is much more interesting when you don't know what's just around the corner. i value those thrills and highs.

the catch up post

my life has changed so much since i put up a substantial post here.

i turned 28 this past december. wow. i think that officially makes me an adult. it also means that 2007 is the year i turn 29. wowee zowee.

i've become a bridesmaid for one of my best friends, stephie of dc. i almost can't believe it. we've known each other since freshman year of college. i'm getting to the age where people actually consider marrying each other. strange.

i watched twin peaks season 1 on dvd and picked up a new motto from kyle mclachlan's character: "give yourself a present every day."

i am now consulting on the side, which is awesome. some extra money to pay rent, and of course, the experience of working with such a lovely company like haystack. i'll be spreading the good word about this to you soon, i'm sure!

i tried writing a song on garageband. it's fun and quirky, like me.

i have met many new people in the last couple months, and i like them.

i took my younger sister to get her first tattoo and paid for it. i love corrupting the youth. i also bought her a ciggy pipe. bwahahahah. i am the most laid back sis ever.

i have found i like saying the word "shizz."

i am addicted to listening to the first 12 minutes of diplo's "live at 3D" on my morning commute. it's the best mix of ciara, ludacris, yeah yeah yeahs, twista and tv on the radio. ever. you should try it if you haven't done so yet.

i have finally stopped retelling bekah's "get awesome" story, which got mixed reviews. some people loved it. some people were disturbed by it. if you wanna know, ask me...

i saw jerry yeti for the second time in my life. nice boy.

i enjoyed superdeluxe.com very much and waved to eugene mirman for probably the 10th time in my life. why is he so adorable and funny? thanks for the invite, dani.

i have about five girl crushes right now. shhhhhh.

many people have been texting or calling me telling me they hear dirty on purpose at places like: doug fir lounge (portland), manhattan mall (nyc) and adrianno goldschmeid (nyc). i admit, i love these kind of texts and calls. keep them coming.
