jinners: why do you come here? and why do you hang around?
who is jinners?
why do you come here? and why do you hang around? ...it was just to see, just to see all the things you knew, i'd written about you... oh so many illustrations...
jinners is my nickname... hopefully in an affectionate sorta way.
I have made a conscious effort not to work on Saturday nights if I can help it. I think it will improve my mental health. Last week I went to Abbey's rooftop party and Cameron played the new M83 album, Saturdays=Youth, inspired by John Hughes movies apparently. It was so good that I went out and bought it the very next day. It's THAT good. "Kim & Jessie" reminds me of high school crushes... If this is how the soundtrack to my summer begins, I can't wait to see how the rest takes shape.

Artanker Convoy Music Featured in YouTube Doc Series "The House We're In"
I love the idea of this YouTube documentary series, The House We're In, featuring singer-songwriter Jont. He goes around and tours at people's houses, and everyone knows sometimes the best, most intimate shows are house parties...
Here's the description off the channel: The House We're In is the UK sequel to The State We're In - a weekly ten-part video blog series following musician Jont and film-maker Dave Depares as they put on UNLIT in Myspace users' houses that they've never met before.
I want to do a show at my apartment. Anyone interested?
Artanker Convoy, the new psychedelic krautrock jazzy band I am managing, has music featured in Episode 1 of this YouTube series. Check it out below!

What can I say about this show other than I love Tim & Eric so much I wanted to get hit with their raw hot dogs and Papa Johns pizza so badly? But I was just out of reach. I didn't even get spewed on. BUT it was indeed awesome, and I can't wait for more. Please come back to town and play again! Don't make me wait until 2009. Great job! By the way, the DVD of the first season of Tim & Eric's Awesome Show Great Job is out now from Adult Swim. Go grab it! Also if you haven't seen it, check out Tom Goes To the Mayor. Soooo good.
What is it about sweet, cute Swedish dudes that they can charm us Americans with their awkward, adorkable stage banter? Yes, that's right, I said ADORKABLE. It's like a foreign version of VH1 Storytellers. Peter Moren (of Peter Bjorn and John) writes charming and earnest music about love - like goofy in love -- like ridiculously in love -- you know, the honeymoon "in love" feeling that we're all addicted to.
You can hear the unabashed romance in songs he's written for his girlfriend, like when he's singing "I'm all about you, you're all about me, we're all about each other!" It's one thing if you have someone a bit more "serious singer songwriter" singing these lines, but there is a bit of a wink when Peter delivers them, and that's what made me smile so much during the set. Doug from Dirty on Purpose and Tobias Froberg (who also performed on the solo record) also played with Peter during the set.
Check out the rest of his tour dates on his MySpace.
I accompanied my friend Artanker to see this band called Aquila at a random 420 party on Sunday. It took me a few seconds to realize it was that kind of party... I know, I'm a little slow. It was in a small rehearsal studio in the 'burg, and a small entrance fee got you free alcohol and exotic mood modifiers. Unbelievable.
We got there and a dude from MGMT and some other bands formed a jam band and started getting gnarly Marley. They had Artanker bang on some drums as well. Random and fun. I was into the whole basement feel of the party. I felt like I was in college or something.
Aquila is a two-piece girl outfit of drums, bass and female vocal harmonies. They were some pretty cool parts just by themselves, but all of a sudden we heard psychedelic guitar lines over their drum and bass -- even the band themselves seemed confused. Turned out it was the dude from MGMT sitting on a couch in the back of the room just going off on his guitar. He ended up joining them for some of their performance.
After the Jump Summer Festival with Make Music New York!
In a few short months, it will be Summer and that means the second annual After the Jump Fest! Bigger, better with even more acts and surprise guests, this year the festival takes place along side the city wide music event, Make Music New York (which itself is a part of the worldwide music phenomenon that takes place in 300 cities in 108 countries) on the first day of Summer, June 21st.
After the Jump Fest is the effort of 20 New York City music bloggers whose goal is to help new artists gain exposure while raising money for struggling school music programs. This year, After the Jump is teaming up with The Music Hall of Williamsburg and Galapagos Art Space for a festival stretching from noon until last call. In the next few months, After the Jump blogs will be making more announcements about the festival including new artists and pre-parties. Stay tuned and in the mean time, check out AftertheJumpFest.com for information on our past events and mark your calendars! It's going to be a doozy.
For press opportunities such as interviews with the organizers or bands, please contact publicity@afterthejumpfest.com For sponsorship and all requests, contact producer Jennifer Kellas: jkellas@afterthejumpfest.com
Handsome Furs, Jon Benjamin, Violens @ Bowery Ballroom
I loved the entire night. Handsome Furs really rocked as lead singer Dan really brings a nice edge that reminded me of Bruce Springsteen at times. Lex was also hot and animated on the electronic side, twiddling knobs and jumping in the air at the same time. Loved it. Violens also were great -- I love George's vocals, and they brought a more robust sound to the songs live. Jon Benjamin did his "Perfect Storm" bit in between bands -- and it was pretty hilarious. I loved watching the crowd get a little bit confused, but if they had any sense of humor, they would have gotten how funny the entire set up was!
Dirty on Purpose, Mahogany, Shooting Spires, Sisters @ Mercury Lounge
Here are some (admittedly) crappy photos from the night. When you're working at a show as a manager, you don't get to hang out in the front to take nice photos. Instead you are relegated to the back of the room to "work." That's my excuse! Thanks to everyone who came out to the show!
Sound Bites said it best so I won't even try to go into all the ins and outs for the Dirty on Purpose/Mahogany show coming up on Friday at Mercury Lounge.
I will just say, I can't wait for the show and I hope you make it out! It's $10 advance tickets!
I went to see French Kicks last night at Mercury Lounge, and was really excited to see the band. It's been a while... and I was ready for some nostalgia. They have a new record coming out called Swimming via Vagrant Records. You can find it on iTunes already.
At their strongest, French Kicks blend honeyed harmonies that swirl until you're lost and floating in the melodies. The set as a whole was a bit on the mellower side (which is reflective of the new record), and I definitely felt like I missed Stinchy and his soaring, uplifting keyboard parts. But you know what? I love French Kicks and will always love them. They have a pretty consistent sound that is anchored by lead singer Nick Stumpf's magic vocals and the band's musical talents.
They have two more dates to their Mercury Lounge residency... Go check them out! April 8 w/ The Subjects April 15 w/ Miguel Mendez
