jinners: why do you come here? and why do you hang around?
who is jinners?
why do you come here? and why do you hang around? ...it was just to see, just to see all the things you knew, i'd written about you... oh so many illustrations...
jinners is my nickname... hopefully in an affectionate sorta way.
A Place To Bury Strangers, King Khan & The Shrines, Black Acid @ South Street Seaport
Yes, the South Street Seaport shows are among my favorite summer moments. What better way to spend a Friday night? Along the water, the dramatically lit boats and some great music = New York fun.
A Place To Bury Strangers headlined this past Friday night, and let me tell you they totally killed it. It was an amazing explosion of beautiful noise as Ollie, Jay and Johnno took the stage to show fans and tourists a modern twist on shoegaze psychedelics.
King Khan & The Shrines was the big surprise for me. Right in the middle of two shimmery noise bands, there was the Indian re-incarnate of James Brown also known as King Khan and his 10 piece garage soul band, complete with a pom-pom'd smiling dancer. Amazing. I couldn't help but dance for joy.
Black Acid opened the night, and they sounded really good straight off their tours with the Raveonettes in the States and a European jaunt. Keep an eye on them, they are getting really fucking good.
Lately, my mood has been going up and down like crazy. When I'm up, I'm really happy. When I'm down, I'm crying into a napkin. Life is so complex, choosing between happiness and sadness seems an impossible feat. I am both!

There are a couple events I added to my weekend agenda that I thought you might find fun or interesting...
Joe Bradley, 2008 Whitney Biennial contributor and lead singer of Cheeseburger, will have a couple pieces at the Deitch Projects art opening tomorrow night. It's part of a killer group showing. 6-9pm.
Tonight, Mazing Vids are playing @ Glasslands. Dance party! Show starts at 9pm. Other bands performing are Indian Jewelry, S.S.P.S. and Terrible Eagle. I'm heading there after A Place To Bury Strangers at the Seaport...
THE BREEDERS TO PERFORM LIVE AT OTHER MUSIC! Yes, the rumors are true! On Friday, July 11th at 9PM, indie rock legends the Breeders will be setting up in our shop and playing a very special in-store performance, which will be filmed for an upcoming Live at Other Music episode. Obviously, space is super limited and we've only got 50 pairs of passes to go around. We're going to keep it simple...all you have to do to enter is email enter@othermusic.com. We'll be picking the 50 names at random on Tuesday, July 1st, and notifying the winners via email. Good luck!

Thanks to everyone who came out to After the Jump Fest this past weekend in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It was a wonderful day full of great music from bands and seeing the slew of friends there -- both new and old -- was so awesome. Thanks to the neighborhood for being so cool about the festival -- and I would just like to give a virtual high-five to my fellow ATJ bloggers for really pulling together for a good cause. Charity rules, and in the end of the day we raised thousands of dollars to aid music education in New York! I'm all about it!
Some highlights for me...
papercranes great performance on the day stage. (Rain Phoenix put in an especially impassioned performance while friends like Julia Stiles applauded her on...
Bryan Scary & the Shredding Tears really took us to Scaryville with their performance in their scary gray jumpsuits. Men at work from the dark side of psychedelic rock.
Chairlift put in a beautiful performance inside of Music Hall of Williamsburg.
Bell also captivated with her cute sounds in Galapagos.
Oh and this sweet tooth also loved the fact that the Ice Cream Man parked its van on North 6th street and cooled me off with a much loved fruit bar. Yum.
Coloring in my new Gen Art Pulse tote bag. Thanks to the Pulse for that! Fabric pens rule, and they are still around, peoples. Get crafty!
I wish I had gotten a chance to see a few other bands during the day like Phil and the Osophers and Pela (I love and miss you guys!!) and other acts during the night like DJ XXXchange and Health. Alas, I had to jet to my other job as band manager. More about that later...

I went to Film Forum yesterday for the final day of their Godard week. I was so happy I did because I fell in love with Vivre Sa Vie. Tragic. Real. Unexpected. Lovely.
The entire experience was inspiring -- from the latte I sipped before the movie to Anna Karina's performance to the flow of music versus noise in the composition of the film. I was wholly enamored. J'adore! Or at least I think that's how you say it in French.
Check out one of my favorite scenes, where Nana (Karina's character) dances out of boredom, a need to feel alive and not succumb to the mundaneness of her situation.
Oddly enough, this Myspace site has the entire film on this page... but I recommend you get a higher quality version from your local rental or video store.
Last Friday's muxtape never went up because I went to see Sex and the City the movie in the middle of the day and cried. Shit happens! Here it is for you on a Tuesday. Hope you enjoy...
