My Love Affair With the Walkmen Continues To Be Gigantic

As you all know, one of my favorite bands is The Walkmen. I associate them with the beginning of my love for the New York music scene. I can't even tell you how I felt the first time I heard "Wake Up" and "We've Been Had." It was a transformation for me. Jinners was, indeed, born.

So it's not surprisingly that here I am five years later, still raving about them. I am particularly excited to hear their new album, You & Me, coming out on Gigantic Music on September 16. You can stream the new single, "In the New Year," on their MySpace.

Psychic Powers - Download Frozen EP from RCRDLBL.com For Free

There are a lot of bands I don't fancy these days, but today I woke up to find this little gem in my inbox. I actually like what I hear... the electronic dreamy and sort of dark sounds of Psychic Powers from Los Angeles. The duo, Nik Brinkman & Alejandro Cohen, kind of remind me of New Order. There is a playfulness present in their music, but those vocals are cool and somber just like Bernard Sumner. I especially like "Running" and "Special Boy."

The Breeders @ McCarren Park Pool

My friend and I were talking about the Deal sisters from The Breeders yesterday. She had gone to see the Webster Hall show and said the indie boys were screaming for Kelley Deal like fanatical teenagers. She truly is an indie rock goddess. So is Kim Deal.

Hell, I was excited to see them for the first time at the JellyNYC McCarren Park pool party yesterday. The two of them together were magic on stage. When they played "Iris" I kind of flipped. I loved that song when I was in high school.

They also played "Night of Joy," my favorite song on the new album, Mountain Battles.

Can you tell I am experiencing all sorts of 90s nostalgia? Loves it.

On the Moon Music Shows

So the truth is that even though I go to a lot of shows, many of the shows I go to have to do with work -- with the bands I manage. So if you are reading this blog to get a glimpse of what my life is like in New York, here are some photos from the past couple months worth of shows for my bands. It's been fun, and a couple of them were with headlining bands that were a blast from the past. Sometimes I can't even believe it, and feel really lucky. Knock on wood.
