hugh gets french kicked by his own performance, but we think the blood only makes him sexier... hugh, are ya single? i have some friends i can introduce you to, and they all have nice shoes!

derek, i think it's a compliment that you say i make you miss your friends. i'm not even sure if i know what exactly you do there out on the west coast, but i'm sure it's worth it if it made you move 3,000 miles across the country.

so i did get my ass over to the visual arts gallery to check out damon hege's five pieces on display.
art can evoke feelings that aren't always easily expressed in prose. perhaps at another time damon can tell me what he was feeling when he created these wonderfully depressing pieces. till then, here are the words that came to mind when i saw his poetic work:
ghostly, morose figures
haunted, distorted
mutated, horrific
hanging lifeless
wheels turning
fire burning
birth and death and umbilical cords
torture, humiliation as entertainment
as source of amusement
holocaust -- oven with burning bodies/babies
decomposing, melting like hiroshima
deformed, mourning, helpless, hopeless

are you depressed yet? his works actually have a very new york feel to it. it's a feeling i recognized almost immediately, the same kind of helplessness and horror i felt on sept. 11...

if you google "walkmen carson daly", my site comes up as the second search result. weird!

03.08.03 -- check out the photo gallery from the french kicks/idewild show...

last night's rock report: despite the seconds canceling out of the show last night, and turing machine headlining at the last minute, the show last night was fun. thoroughbred thoroughly kicked our asses with their swift hooves, and their first gig enthralled all of those who were their bidding on their success. portia banged out her aggressions on the drums, anna left everyone drooling with her punky vocals and slick guitar skills, and fon lin's broad range of low pitched to straight-out-shouting vocals electrified along with her bass rhythms. i think i saw hearts and stars in justin and christian's eyes. such sweeties! oxford collapse also played a great set, despite the fact that mike and dan were under the weather -- feel better guys! chicken soup and peppermint tea do wonders for me. and turing machine rawked -- anna and i were dancing throughout their set like fools, but who cares? dance party usa! woo woo! after their set we saw panther jayson green come in and help the guys take their equipment out... at least that's what we think he was doing.

i also had a few more personal resolutions about myself last night, and i'm not sure if i'm ready to share yet. but i'm going to start working on improving myself a little bit. i've kind of made up some excuses in my head for slacking on my personal shite, and it's time to get it together and work it like missy elliott. is it worth it? we'll find out...

another thing pete enlightened me on is that the walkies and the frenchies are in the fischerspooner video "the 15th" which you can view on the dvd portion of their new cd #1. ahhhhh. craziness. no wonder ham was at the fischerspooner cd release party... ok, so i went out and bought the fischerspooner cd just to see what pete was talking about, and there it was!

ok, pete, this one's for you...

at the after-party i talked with pete a long time, and he was a total sweetheart. it's actually kind of nice to see how down-to-earth the group was. i've interviewed a lot of band guys, and almost always, they are pretentious, as in they seem to say things because they feel like you expect them to say certain things. they're not real. but peter walkmen was really down-to-earth, and that was refreshing. i think i was really startled by his sincerity. these aren't the kind of band guys who mack on girls (they all have serious girlfriends 'cept for walt, and as you might know, paul is engaged). i think my indie rock boyfriend quiz on hamilton was wrong -- i apologize, hammy! they're the kind of guys who like to hang around and talk about anything and everything and seemed pretty laid back. i met peter's roommate damon hege who is an up-and-coming artist and former member of the recoys. he currently has some etchings displayed at the visual arts gallery on wooster street. i think i'm going to go check it out today, pete says it's totally fucked up (or something like that). this is the description on the sva site:
Damon Hege presents a series of etchings that represent what the artist sees as microcosms of modern existence. Rife with social commentary, Hege’s works depict the self-inflicted wounds of humanity. Slightly reminiscent of Bruegel, Hege’s dream-like images are populated by human figures both confined and transformed by their environment. All of the works point to the direct relationship between the artifice of society and its ills.

peter told me that the walkmen might play a secret show some time before their april bowery shows, and they're thinking about two venues in particular... will keep you posted.

also heard that the recoys record will reveal that a lot of the walkmen songs are recycled recoys tunes... ie: "that's the punchline" -- one of my faves.

i also hear from pete that the new walkmen record is gonna be harder and faster and will be produced by the same guy who produced the white stripes. i think we're going to see a drastic change in their recorded music, and i can't wait to hear it!

03.07.03 -- well, pete walkmen told me that i don't update my site often enough, and he gets bored and turns to the modern age instead. poo poo. so i guess i'll have to start writing epics on my site more often for his reading pleasure. petey, this one's for you!

i found pete at the merch table, and i was going to introduce myself -- but he already knew who i was... how cool is that? (ooh that last phrase was adopted during from my teen press days. need to nix that shite.) he posed with a flier for the upcoming peaches show, was such a good sport 'bout it while he was helping his friend (alley?) push idlewild merch. i asked him if he was going to the after-party at lit, and he said he was so after a few pictures i went off into the cold.

needless to say, the french kicks were smooth like butta. they didn't play "be my baby" but they did play some goodies, and nick's voice was awwwn. hugh, the new drummer, rocked out so hard he hurt himself with his drumstick and started bleeding all over his shirt. wow, he's the only french kick that went crazy like that. i think the rest of the guys were kind of in shock. blood! during the french kicks set! whoa. the universe has certainly turned upside down. their shows will never be the same, fer sher.

idlewild was also better than i thought they'd be. i came to the show with no expectations, and was pleasantly surprised by their hard edges, their music sometimes reminding me of a sunny day real estate kinda thing... tho not quite the same. scottish accent intact, the singer donned a "master" tee and said "dank ya veddy much-a" a lot. the band even dedicated a song to the walkmen, and i guess at that point i figured the walkies had to be there. we spotted paul after the show, but not at the after-party. i was actually kind of surprised more people didn't come to the after-party, considering the hundreds of fanatical people bobbing their indie lil' heads at the show. where was everyone?

pete's roomie damon introduced me to hamilton, my first introduction to the walkmen frontman... and he was talking about the recoys uniting for a show around the time of the re-release of their album on realistic records. will keep you posted on that... the funny part was when ham asked me if i knew the recoys. i told him that i did, and then he got this sincerely confused look on his face -- and asked me how i knew about the recoys. damon and i started laughing... that probably wasn't nice (especially because he looked like he wasn't in the best of moods), but i didn't understand why he thought i wouldn't know about the band that's mentioned in every walkmen article ever written! i told him that i heard about the recoys re-issue from derek teslik, and he again shot me the confused look and asked, "you're friends with derek?" i think he was pretty drunk because then he kept saying things like, "we're [recoys] gonna be successful! we're gonna finally make it!" more laughter from me and damon. hammy, i couldn't tell you this last night, but i think the walkmen are pretty successful, too. woo woo. drink on!

pete and i also had a long discussion about whether the walkies should sign to a major or stick with smaller labels. i think that though it might not change the band members personally, there are so many other factors that may somehow change the dynamics or the aura surrounding the band. but change, my friend, isn't always bad. we're all afraid of change, but i think it's just a part of life. if there's lots of money and you can quit your day job at the met and the museum of sex, why not? getting some money for your music isn't selling out. it's a privilege. nobody yells at radiohead for being on capitol, why can't the walkies make some cash on a major, too? if you say they're selling out, you're full of shite and just want them to be poor for their art for your own weird personal affirmation. disagree? let me know.

close to modern, close to modern... we're ready for nick to stand tall and sing. will there still be magic on the stage with hugh as the dummer?

03.06.03 -- i am siked to see the french kicks tonight! woo woo! actually there are a string of shows coming up this weekend, and i hope that i'm not totally exhausted by the end. tonight french kicks; tomorrow, thoroughbred; and saturday, the realistics. how fantastic!

i've started to do updates for the natural history site. i'm actually under their "contact" page, so it's like official, or something. ;-)

keith and i stopped by toy tokyo the other day and our friend there said he would insert fliers for the moldy peaches show into the bags of customers who look like they would enjoy the show... how cool is that? i think the show will be super!

Don't forget to check out Anna's birthday bash show tomorrow night at Luxx:

March 7th (Friday)
Turing Machine
w/ Oxford Collapse and Thoroughbred
Where: Luxx, 256 Grand St. Brooklyn, NY

i recently wrote to the liars to see if they'd like to play a show at luxx, and aaron wrote me back and said they weren't slacking, they were working on new stuff. that's good to hear, but i'd still like to see them play a live show! soon! i'll keep digging...

jco sent me a link yesterday to this really bizarre interview with hamilton walkmen. what's his favorite meat product? which walkmen is getting married? read this crappy interview and find out!

sounds like hamilton wrote this "pick-up line" article on the morning news site:
So. The Pick-up Line That Always Works
‘Wow, those are great shoes.’

this line would definitely work on me if i were in fact wearing great shoes. otherwise, i'd say sod off.
