bark like a dawg

since i was too sick
to go to the first kanine records show, you should get your wrap
up from someone
who did go. cameron even took a couple of pictures.

i love this story
about being a starfucker.
i remember when margaret cho has this really ugly photo/feature
in spin back in the day, and i think she was wearing a slutty
tank top that said, "starfucker". does anyone else remember
that?

good news, folks.
i think i'm well enough to go rawk out tonight. yay!! see ya at
north six.

the hills are alive, with the sounds of sweden

photo:
the-sounds.com
the much-hyped band
the
sounds finally makes it to mtv.com. i have to admit, they're
catchy as hell. but is it me or does that lead singer look like
deborah harry? and do i dig that? and does anyone care? whatever.
they're on james iha's label -- i remember i used to dig james
in high school. i had the biggest crush and drew him in art class
using charcoal, using a photo from Spin magazine as my
reference. remember when Spin was cool? whatever happened
to that?

startime
has some info on the upcoming soundtrack release party this saturday
for as
daylight breaks, a heartbreaking documentary on one woman's
journey to make her son's life happier in the face of a crushing,
debilitating disease called canavan.

according to rolling
stone:
Despite an abundance
of press, Ryan
Adams' three solo albums -- Heartbreaker, Gold
and the demo collection Demolition -- have combined
for sales of just over 500,000, according to SoundScan, substantially
less than the similarly hyped White
Stripes (690,000 of White Blood Cells) and the
Strokes (879,000 of Is This It) have sold for just
one record.
and i bet that's
still substantially more than the
walkmen have sold with everyone who pretended to like
me is gone. speaking of the walkmen, realistic
records has posted another recoys mp3. this time, it is "blizzard
of '93, which is an older version of "blizzard of '96".
i dunno... i sort of like 93 better than 96. what do you think?
back to ryan -- maybe
ryan adams should have the right to make an incredibly depressing
album like love is hell. his label are stupid fucks for
making his recording life hell. i liked the depressing songs in
demolition. he's a great storyteller, and shouldn't be forced
to make happy pop songs if he doesn't want to.

so what
have i been listening to lately? um... suzanne
vega's retrospective: the best of suzanne vega. the
major reason is because i am interviewing the lovely miss vega
friday morning (yikes!), but i'm also listening because i think
she is one of today's greatest storytellers. listening to "tom's
diner" takes me back to junior high when people thought it
was fun to wear overalls with one strap unhooked. thank god i
never got down with that fashion. i remember listening to the
song in wood shop. we were making wooden whistles and people would
whistle the "doo doo doo doo" part. good times! and
who could forget "luka" and pretty in pink's
"left of center".

i'm
too sick to go out to the mommy & daddy show tonight. goddamnit!
and it sounds like everyone is going. new york's weather is the
worst part about the city. it totally trips me up. i hope i'm
well enough by saturday to go to the stellastarr*/oxford collapse
show. grrrr!!!

there
is something just soooooo wrong about tongue
splitting. that's like, hey i really hate that my nose is
connected to my face. let's just cut it up a little. oh wait,
that's michael jackson. i can't even look at the picture of that
kid with the split tongue. NASTY!!!!! [link from stereogum]

in a dark, dark room, there played a dark, dark band
photo:
jinners
jasper's description
of me as a pseudo celebrity on his site jenyk.com
is a trip. take note, jasper, i ain't no pseudo celeb and i don't
pretend to be. check it, yo! mister photog himself was indeed
snapping
pix at the dirty on purpose show last night at luxx. he's
got a great eye (and lens) for capturing the dark and dirty...on
purpose. and the guy never uses any flash. i envy that. btw, jasper,
thanks for the car ride. i felt like we were all on a field trip
or something. you're too nice.
dirty
on purpose played luxx on monday night to a half-filled, mysteriously
pitch black luxx. where were all the peeps? monday night blues?
there was however, about 10 times more people to see dop than
there were to see bloom. dop's set was great, save a minor sound
feedback during one song and sometimes barely audible vocals.
their music is intriguing with eeriness, and the players are not
shy about luring us listeners with some fancy fingers from the
two guitarists. they play guitar with a bow... and the drummer
sings... that's so french
kick-y. i'm glad to see that this band is so creative. they
know how to orchestrate a song and make it dynamic. looking forward
to hearing more about them in the future.
good to see miss
detox and melody
nelson out and about. these blogging chicks were on hiatus
from photo snapping last night, so i thought i'd take a few snaps
for posterity. here is the photo
gallery.

if you haven't read
it yet, jco wrote up a spectacular
interview with isaac green for the morning news. she rawks.
speaking of isaac, found this photography site through him: piper
ferguson. she's got some great photos of your indie faves...
and a lot of them in levi's, including the realistics. go figure!
and even more photography! ewan
mcgregor and the rest of the tribeca film festival peeps,
photos by rachel.

panthers
are playing at north six on may 14... don't miss the party! panthers
doing queen covers has gotta be a trippy experience. on another
note, i heard les
savy fav stripped down to their undies and pranced around
on stage with the faint. why oh why did i have to miss that!?!
and don't miss the kanine records shows.

miss jinners, if you're dirty ... on purpose
photo:
dirty on purpose
wow, dirty
on purpose is playing gotham. it's only a matter of time before
these peeps blow up. go see them tonight at luxx.
here's an mp3 of theirs to listen to, if you're not already convinced.
anna says this song, "monument,"
sounds like a U2 song. if you're more into visuals, visit their
official
site or check out jasper's
cool photos. i first caught wind of the band on melody
nelson's site. props to her for her sharp ears.
