if at first you don't succeed, dust yourself off
and try again, we can dust it off and try again...
okay so much activity
today. east coast feel me. west coast feel me.
detroit,
leave me the hell alone. shopping in detroit. 'nuff said!
first off, field
day may be cancelled according to newsday
because the organizers failed to file for a permit in time. yoooo,
that's sooo wrong. but now newsday has updated their story to
include the side of field day organizer andrew dreskin. dreskin
says he filed for the permit in march, and that the vote to deny
the permit is purely political -- in other words, someone does
not want 50,000 people in their nabe. ahem. hopefully things will
work out. nothing is cancelled yet, folks. keep your fingers crossed
for the sake of beck and radiohead.
nelly
wins an ASCAP songwriter of the year award, and his reaction is
the cutest, tho not the most eloquent:
"It's kind of crazy because I just started rapping to stay
the hell out of trouble, for real. And you know the amazing ride
that I've been on is crazy for me and it's crazy from where I
come from, and it's crazy for the people around me. Never in my
wildest dreams did I ever [think] that I'd be a songwriter...songwriter...get
that...that's big."
i was listening to
the yes:
nyc compilation today via mtv.com. i actually like the unitard's
"year to be hated" (aka the yyy's slowing down "our
time"). i think the yyy's should keep unitard and throw out
yyys. word. btw, i have the "live in iceland" cd that
the strokes' live version of "new york city cops" is
taken from. i borrowed it from saryn and forgot to give it back.
i'm sorry, saryn! i will burn it and give it back to thee one
day! julian sounds so good on that cd. it makes me nostalgic for
the good ol' days.
speaking
of yyys, use their record as a serving tray, why don't you?
it's, like, so in style. thanks, nina.
you knew it was going
to happen eventually. brendan benson and the wellfed boys will

we are all made of starfoods

oh starfoods. one
of rachel and i's favorite places to eat and drink (she is crazy
for the cel-ray cup and i love their bourbon and gingerales),
it has gotten even better in the last two weeks! not only have
they added EROTIC
PHOTO HUNT, they have also brought in a slew of board games!
they have totally stolen my heart. i was there on saturday night
and ended up staying there until 4 in the morning. dj shorty was
playing all of these great early 90s hits that one never hears
anymore, and chris sizemore kicked my ass in connect four. rematch!
move back to new york, chris! so apparently, i have written about
starfoods on my site before.
but i didn't expect that when i went there on saturday night that
they would actually know who i was. the bartender i wrote about
on my site came over to our table and whispered in my ear, "mooners
drink for free". sort of confused, i asked him if i had met
him before and later on he explained that i had written about
his "i'm not a mooner" shirt on my site -- the other
starfoods workers had stumbled onto my site after some googling...
what a riot! so he gave me a bourbon and gingerale and a free
tee-shirt. i love that place. the owner/manager is super-nice,
too. everyone go there and order the delicious eggs benedict.
before starfoods,
we were having drinks at great jones cafe. paula (folksongs publicist)
bought me a "shaggy" -- old spiced #3 gingerale with
dark rum. it was so tasty! i talked with caroline from folksongs
for the afterlife and david from bootleg remedy for a while. they
are all the sweetest peeps. bootleg remedy had just finished a
show at joe's pub and they were having celebratory drinks. i have
to see this bootleg remedy. they sound like so much fun! here's
the part i'm not sure i should reveal... i really liked the bartender
at great jones, who was wearing a wfmu shirt and i just knew
that he was a musician... but i was told not to talk to him about
his former band, a synonym for concrete or something like that...
so i think i broke a few smiles from him by talking about the
shocking blue songs on the mix he was playing and telling him
i'd be back to drink his faboo shaggy. sigh. everyone go there
and order the shaggy.
i spent a good part
of the night at jco's birthday party (thus, having to miss that
boggs show) at congee village on houston and allen. that place
is a crazy house with pretty good chinese food. i had a good time.
their bourbon and gingerales were okay. they have an entire section
of their menu devoted to different kinds of intestines. let's
say it's safe to say, i never tried those dishes. i mostly stuck
with the vegetarian options on the menu. everyone go there and
order the stringbeans.
i also finally saw
jco's bf's band the red comes up at the charleston on friday.
the lead singer wore white face paint and they ended their set
with a cover of sinead o'connor's "nothing compares to you".
his voice is a mixture of rolling stones meets g. love meets alanis
morissette. this is the funny photo i was talking about before.

this weekend has
been pretty good overall. keith and i made a quick trick down
to my house in pennsylvania. i gave my sister a belated birthday
present -- a paul frank bag and wallet. she had no idea who paul
frank was. that was the funniest part of all. is paul frank just
a new york phenom???
