wet hot walkmen summer

photo: jinners

ok, i give in. i'm going to buy tickets to go see the walkmen at maxwell's. never have i done this for a band before, but their music just kills me and who knows when they will play in the city again? ok, maybe i have a clue, but still! the walkies were amazing last night as they brought together a huge crowd of random folk in the RAIN for a spectacular show at pier 54 by the hudson river. there aren't many words that can describe my love for this band other than the fact that when they play, i start to go crazy and dance and jump up and down... and believe me, not many bands can make me do that. i got completely drenched with rain and my favorite walkmen songs (ahem, "you've got a nerve"!!!) and loved every second of it. pure bliss. and you know a show is good when even in the pouring rain, people are asking for a SECOND encore. yeah, dude. it's wet and hot. a wonderful walkmen summer show.

bidi and i sauntered (vocab word alert) back stage before the show and ran into peter and hamilton of the walkmen. they were just chillin' out but i could tell hamilton was tired. he's already a kind of surly character to begin with, but the walkmen just came into new york at like 5 in the morning yesterday to play this free pier show. then they fly to DC this morning to play with the french kicks at the black cat. what an amazing life. i am so jealous of everyone who will be at the black cat tonight. grosse contemp, i hope you are going and taking lots of photos!!! and try to get one with hamilton putting the mic in his mouth. we missed yet another chance to capture that last night. grrrr!!!

for a full walkmen pier show photo extravaganza, click here. sorry the pictures are so dark...

also, a big up to dawnie b. you will always be revered in my book for managing the best band!

we also ran into the lovely jo divestar, a total sweetheart, who i've come to adore. love love her. we kicked it in the drizzle with a beer and everything was a-ok.

my friend steven (no no gnomes, moldy peaches) is also in adam's band... as is his fellow gnomes chris and parker (and usually nate when there is no string quartet). adam green was in tip top shape, dancing around stage and his voice sounded really good. he played that "jessica simpson" tune, "everybody dance now" cover of c+c, "dance with me" and tons of good stuff from the new record... if you open up the cd jacket, you'll see steven's name all over it. he played a lot of the instruments and arranged a lot of the songs. i met adam backstage under a tent as we escaped the rain for a brief moment. he remembered me from the moldy peaches side projects show at luxx, and referenced the photo of the band and me on stage. i was pretty happy about that, and i told him i would email him the original photo. he was also wearing this rad green tee shirt that had a bunny on it and said "little bunny foo foo", given to him by a guy named r.land who makes them. nice.

btw, happy birthday, chris!! you should have told me it was your bday! hope it was nice being on stage and rocking out on your special day of birth...

anyhoo, steven disappeared somewhere after the show... ran into margaret from work and aaron -- we raided the beer backstage. it was s'wonderful and fun. free shows and free beer are the best.

ps. i'm sorry all of my photos suck. rain, bad lighting, frenzied fingers... who knows why? check out my fotolog for other photos... mike d captures jared leto at the pier show... divestar has photos from the d. realistic and hightower smith solo show.

libertines gossip... pete is a crackhead... but didn't we all know that? but the reason he got arrested was... find out on stereogum. we were just talking to steven because adam green's band toured with the libertines for a few shows. some guy in the damn personals (boston band) has replaced pete... and he doesn't sing much. sad sad. i can't believe how messed up justine frischmann is. to think, i used to want to be her!

btw, i'm especially proud to announce that our own barbara (modestmint) has interviewed jenny lewis from rilo kiley. read her article on venuszine!

take a few seconds for some sharp knife skills

photo: jinners

as expected, the seconds/knife skills show on saturday night at sin-e rawked everyone harder than a new york monsoon. there were tons and tons of peeps there representin' from ex-liars, yyys, lil fighters, turing machine, sumerians, qatsi, on!air!library!, vaz, low brau, mob stereo, naf, and tons more rock and rollers! a special kudos to walter and bill at sin-e. totally cool peeps.

photo: jinners

i'm really proud of the knife skills crew -- annabiotica, fon lin and jerry -- for seizing the stage with their furious might and cutting the crowd with their swift shifts and swerves. knife skills forever!

photo: jinners

the seconds, of course, were phenomenal. jeannie, zach and brian combine fun, spirit, and spit into their seething set. i love watching zach get bugged out and crazy behind the mic, brian smiling and locking eyes with his hunny bunny and jeannie flexing her bass muscles, all the while looking super hot (how many girls can do that, i ask?).

chinese stars were very loud and energetic... fon lin said the lead singer reminded her of jayson panthers... it's true. they had the same moves, but the spirit behind the moves is essentially different.

anyhoo, the afterparty was at daddy's, and i proceeded to drink a bloody mary. i only got halfway through. jude from qatsi bought us all shots and we merrily drank that goodness down. so much fun! see photos in the fotolog...

the previous night i attended the elefant/stellastarr* show. diego got all bowie on us with some spikey mullet-like 'do and shimmery silver eyeshadow. the girlies were all drooling over this argentine-american phenom... you know who you are!

during the stellastarr* set, the crowd formed a mosh pit for "my coco". and it was bliss for many in the front row, including giulia, jasper, ashley, audrey, and the rest of the blogging community. i saw many a camera flashin' so i know everyone was there! i met one of audrey's friends from a band called saintface. they will be playing the mercury lounge on saturday, so make sure ya show up for that. for the rest of the night i hung out with rachel, aaron, and kevin. we kind of walked by manhatta, and i couldn't believe the super-trendiness. such a turn off. kevin and i ventured home into brooklyn, and rachel and aaron braved the manhatta-stylie-madness.

mike d went to the yyys show at maxwell's and has posted some hot hot hot photos. i kind of wish i had gone now. the wicked has pics from the ss* show. so does jenyk and new york doll.

and now, a tribute to linda mccartney, sung by morrissey. thanks, naf! check out other such wondrous flashs projects at headstaggers.com.

i finally have my fever gallery up. woo hoo!

don't forget to check out dennis realistics' solo performance tonight at sin-e. he's real and spectacular!
