A Place To Bury Strangers, King Khan & The Shrines, Black Acid @ South Street Seaport

Yes, the South Street Seaport shows are among my favorite summer moments. What better way to spend a Friday night? Along the water, the dramatically lit boats and some great music = New York fun.

A Place To Bury Strangers headlined this past Friday night, and let me tell you they totally killed it. It was an amazing explosion of beautiful noise as Ollie, Jay and Johnno took the stage to show fans and tourists a modern twist on shoegaze psychedelics.

King Khan & The Shrines was the big surprise for me. Right in the middle of two shimmery noise bands, there was the Indian re-incarnate of James Brown also known as King Khan and his 10 piece garage soul band, complete with a pom-pom'd smiling dancer. Amazing. I couldn't help but dance for joy.

Black Acid opened the night, and they sounded really good straight off their tours with the Raveonettes in the States and a European jaunt. Keep an eye on them, they are getting really fucking good.

Black Acid / The Raveonettes @ Bowery Ballroom

I went to see Richard Fearless' new band Black Acid at Bowery Ballroom the other night. They opened for the Raveonettes. Doug from Dirty on Purpose plays drums for Black Acid, and I thought he added a powerful element to the band -- complementing the unique Fearless vocals that seemed to reverberate from deep and sexy to screechy and cool. The set started off really strong, but there was a bit of a lull in the middle of the set. I attributed it to the fact that they are still a very new band and this is their first real tour. The set ended really strong though and I think when all the kinks are worked out, this band is going to be something fierce!

I stayed for a few of the Raveonettes songs and thought they sounded really pretty and lush -- but was a bit disappointed that a lot of the instrumentation was not live, they were backing tracks. This prevents much spontaneity in a live set, which is the thrill of a concert, no?
