Free Jaymay MP3 on Filter

I have always been a fan of Jaymay the moment I heard her song "Gray or Blue." She also sings the title track on Dirty on Purpose's latest EP, Like Bees.

I loved all the quirky, endearing bits of her music -- the kind of music that unravels the soul of a songwriter/performer to reveal her hopes and disappointments and observations. It sounds simple, but if you tried to do it yourself, you would probably come off as terribly cheesy and forced. The trick is to write and sing and let it flow naturally -- a tough feat, but somehow Jaymay pulls it off.

Check out her new song, "Blue Skies," which is available for free download on Filter's site. Check it out here.

I added "Gray or Blue" and "Corduroy" to my imeem player above for your enjoyment.

She has a bunch of tour dates coming up with the likes of Nouvelle Vague, Ed Harcourt and The Bird and the Bee. Check her MySpace for specifics.

Download: Sam Champion's "Your Party Was Yesterday" on RCRDLBL.com

One of my favorite young alt-country bands, Sam Champion, have released a single with RCRDLBL.com today called "Your Party Was Yesterday." Things have been quiet in Sam Champion-land lately, but I'm glad to see they are continuing to write and record. They'll be releasing a single every month through March, so keep an eye out.

Remix Download: Amanda Blank - "Get It Now" (Robot Koch Remix)

So y'all know I am an Amanda Blank fan (after seeing her with Spank Rock during CMJ), and I have been itching to find some music on her. I already love her song with M.I.A. called "Take It Easy" (if anyone has this, please send it to me!).

But I just got an interesting message in my inbox from a Berlin-based DJ called Robot Koch. He did an awesome remix of Amanda Blank's song "Get It Now."

Download it here.

62 Percent Paid Nothing For Radiohead Album

Well there ain't much of a pot of gold at the end of In Rainbows for Radiohead. After offering fans the option of paying whatever they wanted for the new album, it seems that fans are either lazy and/or cheap.

According to Digital Music News, "17 percent paid an average of $4 for the album, while 12 percent paid between $8 and $12." I guess even bands that have been around for a while with long-standing fans don't have the loyalty from their fans that one would have expected. Is everyone just way too jaded to pay for albums anymore?

Of course, what is unclear so far is whether the band still earned more now than they would have if they had to also cut in a major label. They still sold a substantial amount, moving over a million units.

On a related note, Parlophone has put Radiohead's entire back catalog and put it on a 4GB USB stick to be sold for just under $73. Why even bother!

Power To the People... Pay Whatever The Hell You Want For Music... and Magazines... and What Else?

First Radiohead says they want fans to pay whatever they feel like for their new album, In Rainbows, online. They want the fans to decide the price. Fans have the power. [read here]

Then Saul Williams follows the new Radiohead model and offers his album as a free download on his site. [read here]

Now Paste magazine has ads posted everywhere asking people to subscribe to their magazine for whatever they want to pay. [read here]

What the hell is happening!?

This gives new meaning to the phrase "Power to the people."

Will this really help music? Magazines? What's next? I hope airlines start asking people to set their own flight prices!
