I went to see
French Kicks last night at Mercury Lounge, and was really excited to see the band. It's been a while... and I was ready for some nostalgia. They have a new record coming out called
Swimming via Vagrant Records. You can find it on iTunes already.
At their strongest, French Kicks blend honeyed harmonies that swirl until you're lost and floating in the melodies. The set as a whole was a bit on the mellower side (which is reflective of the new record), and I definitely felt like I missed Stinchy and his soaring, uplifting keyboard parts. But you know what? I love French Kicks and will always love them. They have a pretty consistent sound that is anchored by lead singer Nick Stumpf's magic vocals and the band's musical talents.
They have two more dates to their Mercury Lounge residency... Go check them out!
April 8 w/ The Subjects
April 15 w/ Miguel Mendez
